Increased spread of global flash droughts threatens vegetation productivity resilience.

Flash drought (faster-developing drought) has been pervasively intensified, posing detrimental constraints on vegetation productivity. However, the potential expansion of flash droughts from flash drought hotspots to non-hotspots and its associated risks to vegetation productivity remain unknown. Furthermore, the divergence in the underlying drivers governing vegetation productivity responses to flash and slow droughts (slower-developing droughts) is unclear. We quantify the dominant drivers underlying vegetation productivity resilience (the departure of productivity anomalies after drought ef

Household coping strategies for food insecurity during droughts in northern Namibia.

As droughts grow more frequent and severe, understanding how households respond to food insecurity is essential for shaping effective humanitarian and adaptation programs. Based on a household survey of 730 respondents across four regions in northern Namibia, this study explores who experiences food insecurity, the coping strategies households use to manage drought, and how these strategies relate to household characteristics and perceptions of future risk. The survey collected information on household demographics, income sources, access to food aid, and food security status one year after a

Hydrological droughts reduce carbon dioxide emission from the Yangtze River networks.

River networks release significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere via gas exchanges at water-air interface, profoundly affecting the global carbon cycle. Hydrological drought, characterized by negative anomalies in river discharge, can affect the transport and decomposition of organic matter, thereby significantly impacting riverine CO2 emissions. However, the extent to which hydrological droughts affect CO2 emission fluxes remains unanswered. In this study, we developed a framework to quantify the impact of hydrological droughts on CO2 emissions from the Yangtze River net

Exploring land cover change after prolonged droughts at the global level.

Anthropogenic climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of droughts, which accelerate land degradation, harm ecosystems, and threaten water security and livelihoods. However, the global impact of prolonged droughts on land cover changes remains poorly studied. This research analyses precipitation data to identify drought conditions and compares them with land cover datasets. The analysis explored three analytical dimensions, over the period 1992-2021: country level, income level, and climatic level. Results show a strong connection between droughts and land cover changes, with lo

Moderate Hydrological Droughts Maximized CO2 Sink in China's Largest Floodplain Lake.

Carbon dynamics in floodplain lakes are critical to gaining a full understanding of the global carbon budget. Here, we constructed a spatially explicit carbon dioxide (CO2) flux data set covering 2003-2022 for China's largest floodplain lake (R2 = 0.86, RMSE = 0.49 gC m-2 d-1). The annual fluxes varied from 52.57 ± 4.71 gC m-2 in 2010 to -186.36 ± 7.27 gC m-2 in 2011. Temporal variations in CO2 flux were primarily driven by changes in the hydrological regime and wetland vegetation conditions. Specifically, water rise onset and recession onset emerged as the two most influential factors. A 10-d

Escalating Ecological Droughts Driven by Compound Soil and Atmospheric Dryness.

Intensifying droughts are increasingly pushing ecosystems beyond functional thresholds, threatening carbon uptake, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. However, the dominant drivers and spatiotemporal patterns of ecological droughts remain poorly understood. Here, we develop an impact-based optimality framework to identify ecological droughts, quantify their impacts on ecosystem photosynthesis, and assess the relative roles of soil and atmospheric dryness using an ensemble of global observation-constrained datasets. We find that 52% of land areas experience ecological droughts driven by com

No drought memory in cotton despite evidence of drought acclimation.

Plants are likely to experience multiple cycles of drought. However, physiological acclimation and stress memory may play key roles in reducing the detrimental effects of successive droughts. We investigated drought acclimation in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) fertilized with low or high nitrogen (N) in a greenhouse factorial experiment. The cotton plants were subjected to one of four drought treatments applied during two 15-day periods, where plants were withheld water or were fully watered. We assessed CO2 assimilation (A400) and stomatal conductance (gs400), maximum rates of ribulose-1,5-bisp

Retention portfolios buffer climate impacts on floods, droughts, and water quality.

Climate change is intensifying floods, droughts, and nutrient export from agricultural landscapes, threatening water security under increasingly non-stationary hydroclimatic conditions. Although landscape-scale water-retention measures are widely promoted as nature-based solutions, their combined effectiveness under future climates remains poorly constrained, particularly across contrasting hydroclimatic settings. Here, we evaluate the capacity of distributed retention portfolios to buffer climate-driven hydrologic and water-quality change using a harmonized, field-explicit Soil and Water Asse

Protracted Indian monsoon droughts of the past millennium and their societal impacts.

Protracted droughts lasting years to decades constitute severe threats to human welfare across the Indian subcontinent. Such events are, however, rare during the instrumental period (ca. since 1871 CE). In contrast, the historic documentary evidence indicates the repeated occurrences of protracted droughts in the region during the preinstrumental period implying that either the instrumental observations underestimate the full spectrum of monsoon variability or the historic accounts overestimate the severity and duration of the past droughts. Here we present a temporally precise speleothem-base

Spatiotemporal variability of hydro-meteorological droughts over the Arabian Peninsula and associated mechanisms.

This study examines the spatiotemporal variability of drought and associated physical processes over the Arabian Peninsula (AP). For this purpose, we computed the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for the period 1951-2020 using the Climate Research Unit and fifth generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis datasets. By applying rotated empirical orthogonal function analysis on the SPEI data, we identified four homogeneous and coherent drought regions. The droughts in the northern regions follow a relatively similar temporal evolution as compared to those in the southern re

Drought timing and local climate determine the sensitivity of eastern temperate forests to drought.

Projected changes in temperature and drought regime are likely to reduce carbon (C) storage in forests, thereby amplifying rates of climate change. While such reductions are often presumed to be greatest in semi-arid forests that experience widespread tree mortality, the consequences of drought may also be important in temperate mesic forests of Eastern North America (ENA) if tree growth is significantly curtailed by drought. Investigations of the environmental conditions that determine drought sensitivity are critically needed to accurately predict ecosystem feedbacks to climate change. We ma

Refined crop modelling reveals intensifying impacts of droughts and heatwaves on global wheat productivity.

Extreme weather events, including heatwaves and droughts, are becoming more frequent and intense, yet their impact on crop productivity remain highly uncertain. Here we jointly improve the structure and parameterization of a crop model to enhance its ability to reproduce climate impacts on global wheat productivity at 10-km resolution. Compared with a multimodel ensemble, the improved parameterization increases model skill by 30%, 20% and 7% in simulating global wheat yield losses from droughts, heatwaves and their compound events, respectively, during 1981-2015. Over the same period, the impr

Analysis of 22-year Drought Characteristics in Heilongjiang Province Based on Temperature Vegetation Drought Index.

Heilongjiang Province is the main grain producing region in China and an important part of Northeast China Plain, which is one of the three black soil belts in the world. The cultivated region of black soil accounts for 50.6% of the black soil region in Northeast China. Due to the obvious rise of temperature and uneven distribution of precipitation in the 20th century, it has been considered to be one of the important reasons for agricultural drought and aridity. Under the background of climate change, understanding the multiyear changes and occurrence characteristics of cultivated land drough

Drought-Induced Accumulation of Root Exudates Supports Post-drought Recovery of Microbes in Mountain Grassland.

Droughts strongly affect carbon and nitrogen cycling in grasslands, with consequences for ecosystem productivity. Therefore, we investigated how experimental grassland communities interact with groups of soil microorganisms. In particular, we explored the mechanisms of the drought-induced decoupling of plant photosynthesis and microbial carbon cycling and its recovery after rewetting. Our aim was to better understand how root exudation during drought is linked to pulses of soil microbial activity and changes in plant nitrogen uptake after rewetting. We set up a mesocosm experiment on a meadow

A 2,623-year temperature reconstruction from the Colorado Rocky Mountains reveals warm and cool droughts.

Recent hydrological drought in the US Southwest has occurred under exceptional warming, intensifying water deficits in the Colorado River and Rio Grande basins. Yet the long-term role of temperature in modulating severe and persistent droughts remains poorly understood because regional temperature reconstructions are scarce. We present a 2,623-y June-September minimum temperature reconstruction from the southern Colorado Rocky Mountains based on Pinus aristata tree rings, spanning 600 BCE to 2022 CE. The reconstruction reveals decadal-to-multidecadal variability but limited expression of susta

Severe droughts in Senegal are linked to increased family reunification at migration destinations in Europe.

Research increasingly links climate shocks to cross-border mobility. Migration scholars often frame migration as a temporary, household-level decision to diversify economic risks. It is unclear whether this holds when risks become persistent and intensifying, as with climate change. Focusing on Europe-bound migration from Senegal, we combine individual-level immigration records with granular weather data to understand whether climatic stress increases the likelihood of family reunification at the destination, a potential signal for permanent settlement. Findings indicate that severe drought is

Insights into the plant responses to drought and decoding the potential of root associated microbiome for inducing drought tolerance.

Global increase in water scarcity is a serious problem for sustaining crop productivity. The lack of water causes the degeneration of the photosynthetic apparatus, an imbalance in key metabolic pathways, an increase in free radical generation as well as weakens the root architecture of plants. Drought is one of the major stresses that directly interferes with the osmotic status of plant cells. Abscisic acid (ABA) is known to be a key player in the modulation of drought responses in plants and involvement of both ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways have been observed during drought. Bayesian network based procedure for regional drought monitoring: The Seasonally Combinative Regional Drought Indicator.

Drought is a complex natural hazard. It occurs due to a prolonged period of deficient in rainfall amount in a certain region. Unlike other natural hazards, drought hazard has a recurrent occurrence. Therefore, comprehensive drought monitoring is essential for regional climate control and water management authorities. In this paper, we have proposed a new drought indicator: the Seasonally Combinative Regional Drought Indicator (SCRDI). The SCRDI integrates Bayesian networking theory with Standardized Precipitation Temperature Index (SPTI) at varying gauge stations in various month/seasons. Appl

The OsRFP1-OsMYB61 module regulates rice drought tolerance by modulating the transcription of ABA- and drought-responsive genes.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a major food crop worldwide. With the acceleration of global warming, drought is becoming one of the major limitations for rice productivity. In plants, MYB transcription factors (TF) play pivotal roles in mediating drought stress tolerance. The rice OsMYB61 encodes an R2R3-MYB protein. OsMYB61 is localized both in the nucleus and the stomatal guard cells in the Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. The expression of OsMYB61 is repressed by ABA and PEG treatments. OsMYB61-overexpressing rice lines exhibited decreased drought tolerance. qRT-PCR evidence showed that the transcr
