Non-Sterile Drug Products-Microbiologically Related Recalls and Compliance Issues.

Non-sterile drug products represent approximately 30% of annual drug sales. Non-sterile drug products offer therapeutic advantages, manufacturing costs that permit wide patient access, and versatility of dosage form and routes of administration, which facilitate patient compliance. These advantages have resulted in an increase in the number and nature of non-sterile finished dosage forms. Regulations and standards require the provision of non-sterile drugs to controlled levels of bioburden, the absence of specified microorganisms, and the absence of objectionable microorganisms. Thoroughly und

Food and Drug Administration Malfunction Recalls of Left Ventricular Assist Devices.

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are being increasingly implanted given the increasing prevalence of patients with advanced heart failure stages. However, they are not exempt from device malfunctions. A PubMed search for the key words (left ventricular assist device malfunction) (ventricular assist system malfunction) was performed. We identified 28 publications in the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website database that addressed LVAD malfunction. Twenty-nine FDA recalls were identified regarding LVAD malfunctions: 17 regarding HeartWare ventricular assist device, six for HeartM

Gender and Serious Drug Recalls: A Textual Sentiment Analysis of Drug Reviews on WebMD.

Consumers taking prescription drugs have limited ability to ascertain drug quality before taking the drug. After drug use, however, consumers frequently report their personal experiences with prescription drugs on one of the world's largest medical websites: WebMD. Drug reviews on WebMD are a potentially rich source of free-form text that can be utilized to inform firms, consumers, researchers, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the quality and safety of prescription drugs. Additionally, because men and women communicate in starkly different ways, the gender of the reviewer may p

Patient perspectives on drug recalls in the Netherlands: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Drug recalls occur regularly with some resulting in medication switches for patients. Limited research into this topic suggests that drug recalls can lead to anxiety and unrest for patients which in turn can affect confidence in and use of medication. In this context, a better understanding of patient perceptions and communication preferences is essential to adequately handle drug recalls and ensure continued medication adherence and trust. AIM: The aim of this study was to elucidate patients' experiences, perceptions, and preferences regarding drug recalls. METHOD: This qualit

Characteristics of United States Food and Drug Administration Drug Recalls Involving Opioid Medications, 2002-2025.

PURPOSE: To characterize the frequency, causes, and severity of opioid medication recalls using United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Enforcement Reports. METHODS: We conducted a 2002-2025 descriptive analysis of recalls involving seven opioids. FDA free-text recall reasons were categorized into five standardized domains (wrong dose/potency, contamination, mispackaging/mislabeling, defective delivery system, and quality assurance deviations) by two independent reviewers, with agreement assessed using Cohen's κ (95% CI). Recall severity (Class I-III) was compared across drugs using

Recalls of Foods and Cosmetics by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Recalls of foods and cosmetics from the marketplace are an expeditious and effective method of removing violative products, particularly those that present a danger to health. Recalls are undertaken through a cooperative effort by industry and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Foods and cosmetics recalled from the period 1 October 1991 through 30 September 1992 were reviewed to determine the kinds of products recalled and the reasons for recall. A total of 230 recalls, involving 569 foods and cosmetics, occurred during the study period. Twenty-eight percent of the recalls were desig

The Food and Drug Administration's role in the canned salmon recalls of 1982.

The Alaska salmon industry conducted 9 recalls of 7 3/4-oz cans of salmon in 1982 after a 7 3/4-oz can of Alaskan salmon was implicated in illness and one death in Belgium from Clostridium botulinum type E toxin. By the code number on the can, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Seattle District, traced it to a specific salmon packer. Subsequently, the FDA received a report about a defect in the can. Investigation of the salmon packer's plant by the Agency revealed that the equipment used at the plant to reform the cans--which arrived at the cannery in a nearly flattened state--might have

Neoplasm Reports in Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System Following Angiotensin Receptor Blocker Recalls.

BACKGROUND: A worldwide voluntary recall of valsartan in July 2018 due to the potential carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine received extensive media and public attention. This was followed by more Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalls regarding other contaminated ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker) products. Our study investigated the association between the FDA recalls and ARB neoplasm adverse events (AEs) reported to the FDA adverse event reporting system. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data were retrospectively collected from the FDA adverse event reporting system database from

Angiotensin Receptor Blockers and the Risk of Cancer: Insights from Clinical Trials and Recent Drug Recalls.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to familiarize readers with issues surrounding angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and the risk of cancer, both from the perspective of clinical trial data and the more recent concerns about impurities in certain ARB products. RECENT FINDINGS: Approximately 45.6% of adults in the USA have hypertension. ARB-containing medications are widely used in the USA, with tens of millions of prescriptions written yearly. Whether exposure to certain ARB drug products contributes to the development of cancer has been the topic of a series of publications.

An ambiguous phenomenon of radiation and drugs: recall reactions.

The term 'radiation recall' describes an acute inflammatory reaction in previously irradiated areas after the administration of certain inciting systemic agents. It was first described in 1959 by D'Angio that dermatitis is related to the application of actinomycin D on the skin. Though this reaction occurs frequently on the skin, it may also be seen in the oral mucosa, the larynx, esophagus, small intestine, lungs, muscle tissue, and brain. Most drugs associated with recall reactions are cytotoxics, however, several other drugs may also elicit the phenomenon. Although this phenomenon is well k

A Retrospective Cohort Study of the 2018 Angiotensin Receptor Blocker Recalls and Subsequent Drug Shortages in Patients With Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Valsartan was recalled by the US Food and Drug Administration in July 2018 for carcinogenic impurities, resulting in a drug shortage and management challenges for valsartan users. The influence of the valsartan recall on clinical outcomes is unknown. We compared the risk of adverse events between hypertensive patients using valsartan and a propensity score-matched group using nonrecalled angiotensin receptor blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used Optum's deidentified Clinformatics Datamart (July 2017-January 2019). Hypertensive patients

Reliability of recall of drug usage and other health-related information.

Health-related information from multiple sources was collected on 334 women living in two predominantly white, affluent retirement communities near Los Angeles as part of a case-control study of a serious chronic disease (cancer of the breast) conducted in 1977-1978. There was no evidence on interview of cases preferentially recalling more drug use or past diseases than controls. Agreement between interview and medical record for all disease conditions studied as well as for height, weight, and most menstrual and reproductive variables was of the order of 90% or better. Age at last menstrual p

Effect of questionnaire structure on recall of drug utilization in a population of university students.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported data are a common source of information about drug exposure. Modes of data collection differ considerably and the questionnaire's structure may affect prevalence estimates. We compared the recall of medication use evaluated by means of two questionnaires differing in structure and length. METHODS: Drug utilization was assessed by two alternative versions of a questionnaire (A - 4 pages, including specific questions for 12 indications/pharmacological groups and one question for "other medicines"; B - 1 page, including 1 open-ended question to cover overall drug consum

Use of Recalled Devices in New Device Authorizations Under the US Food and Drug Administration's 510(k) Pathway and Risk of Subsequent Recalls.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, nearly all medical devices progress to market under the 510(k) pathway, which uses previously authorized devices (predicates) to support new authorizations. Current regulations permit manufacturers to use devices subject to a Class I recall-the FDA's most serious designation indicating a high probability of adverse health consequences or death-as predicates for new devices. The consequences for patient safety are not known. OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of a future Class I recall associated with using a recalled device as a predicate device in the 510(k) pathway. DE
