Melanin as an adsorbent for drug residues.

The binding of seven veterinary drugs (clenbuterol, chlorpromazine, diethylstilbestrol, 19-nortestosterone, salbutamol, salicylic acid and trenbolone) to melanin from Sepia officinalis was investigated. Basic and hydrophobic drugs were the most strongly bound. Desorption by ethanol was complete for neutral drugs but only partial for the basic drugs, which suggests that binding of the latter involves an ionic component. A method of synthesizing melanin in an immobilized form (melanin-PS) on the surface of porous silica was developed. When the drug binding properties of melanin-PS were investiga

Analysis of antithyroid drug residues in food animals.

In the late 1970s, concerns were raised regarding why antithyroid drugs were being administered to food animals to promote growth despite the fact that they had been implicated as being carcinogenic and teratogenic; the growth promotion process produced an inferior quality meat with increased water retention in the animal's gastrointestinal tract. An increased incidence of aplasia cutis (a characteristic scalp defect) in consumers in Spain was linked to an increased consumption of antithyroid-contaminated meat. Therefore, to protect human health, the EU banned the use of antithyroid drugs in f

Mobilization and analytical availability of drug residues in food.

A complete mobilization of veterinary drug residues for quantitative analytical detection is often unsuccessful. For some drugs, one reason for this is the quite different binding forms between the drug and the food matrix, which for three groups of veterinary drugs may be described by sorption-isothermals. The influence of glutathione on sorption-isothermals and residue mobilization is discussed. Thus, better interpretations regarding the availability of residues are possible.

Reducing Veterinary Drug Residues in Animal Products: A Review.

A survey we conducted suggests that the ingestion of veterinary drug residues in edible animal parts constitutes a potential health hazard for its consumers, including, specifically, the possibility of developing multidrug resistance, carcinogenicity, and disruption of intestinal normal microflora. The survey results indicated that antibiotics, parasitic drugs, anticoccidial, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are broadly used, and this use in livestock is associated with the appearance of residues in various animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs. We observed that differen

Health concerns and management of select veterinary drug residues.

The aim of this manuscript is to review the potential adverse health effects in humans if exposed to residues of selected veterinary drugs used in food-producing animals. Our other objectives are to briefly inform the reader of why many of these drugs are or were approved for use in livestock production and how drug residues can be mitigated for these drugs. The selected drugs include several antimicrobials, beta agonists, and phenylbutazone. The antimicrobials continue to be of regulatory concern not only because of their acute adverse effects but also because their use as growth promoters ha

Immunochemical screening for antimicrobial drug residues in commercial honey.

Honey samples (n = 100; origin: various countries from Eurasia, Oceania, and the Americas) were analysed by enzyme immunoassays (EIA) for tetracyclines, streptomycin, and sulfathiazole. Considering antibody specificity, these EIAs are either quantitative (streptomycin) or qualitative (tetracyclines, sulfathiazole) tests. Honey extract purification was achieved by liquid-liquid partition (tetracyclines), and by solid phase extraction-immunoaffinity chromatography (streptomycin, sulfathiazole). Detection limits were 20 micrograms kg-1 (tetracycline equivalents), 10 micrograms kg-1 (streptomycin)

Drug residues in syringes and other injecting paraphernalia in Hungary.

The appearance and spread of new psychoactive substances (NPS) is a phenomenon seen throughout Europe since 2008. Synthetic cathinones, a group of NPS, have been self-reported as the drug injected by the vast majority of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Hungary. This study aims at updating our knowledge of what exactly are the compounds injected by PWID. This multi-site study analysed residues from used injecting drug paraphernalia collected from PWID via low-threshold services and from public places in Budapest, Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged, Békéscsaba and Pécs between March 2015 and February 2

Drug residues in used syringes in Switzerland: A comparative study.

Harm reduction services, including needle-exchange programmes, have been implemented in Switzerland for over 20 years. Their main aim is to lessen the negative social and/or physical consequences associated with illicit drug consumption and, therefore, improve prevention messages. To this end, knowledge of illicit drug consumption practices is necessary. Periodic self-report surveys are the primary source of data for monitoring drug users' behaviour. Analysis of residual content of used syringes can bring further and objective knowledge about consumed products through analytically confirmed da

Assessment of various veterinary drug residues in animal originated food products.

The veterinary drugs are broad-spectrum antibacterial antibiotics; it uses to cure the animal disease. Many countries have banned veterinary drug residues like nitrofurans metabolites, chloramphenicol. However, the people were administrated veterinary drugs to animals as illegal to increase the milk production in animals for economic benefit. The results of illegally use of veterinary drugs remain as a residue in animal product like milk and it is very harmful to whom consume it cause cancer and allergic for human being which has entered the concern among milk consumers. Assessment of antibacterial drug residues in milk for consumption in Kosovo.

The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of drug residues in the raw milk collected from individual farms and milk collection points during 2009-2010 in six different major regions of Kosovo (Prishtinë, Gjilan, Mitrovicë, Pejë, Gjakovë, Prizren). In the present study, a total of 1734 raw milk samples were collected, and qualitatively screened with two different tests, the Delvotest SP assay and an enzyme-linked receptor-binding assay (SNAP). Overall, 106 (6.11%) out of 1734 samples examined with Delvotest SP contained possible drug residues (5.12% and 7.51% of samples from 2009

Residual drugs in the stomach? A case report.

BACKGROUND: High-density material identified in the stomach on computed tomography (CT) most commonly represents ingested drugs, oral contrast agents, or blood. Distinguishing between these is critical, as misidentifying drugs or contrast as active gastric bleeding may lead to unnecessary interventions. We report a rare cause of hyperdense gastric material on CT, other than the three etiologies mentioned above. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old man with Crohn's disease presented to the gastroenterology department with suspected disease recurrence. At 11:20, a gastroscopy identified an antral u

Drug residues recovered in feed after various feedlot mixer truck cleanout procedures.

A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of two methods of equipment cleanout, sequencing or flushing, for reducing drug carryover in feedlot mixer trucks. Feed samples were collected from total mixed rations before and after various feed mixer equipment cleanout procedures. Medicated rations contained either 11 ppm of tylosin or 166 or 331 ppm of chlortetracycline. There were no differences between sequencing and flushing or between flushing with dry barley and flushing with barley silage in the median proportion of drug recovered in the next ration. A larger drug reduction was ac

The effect of cooking on veterinary drug residues in food: 2. levamisole.

The heat stability of levamisole was investigated. Results obtained indicated that the drug was stable in boiling water at 100 degrees C, but unstable at 260 degrees C in cooking oil, with a half-life of about 5 minutes. The effect of cooking (microwaving, boiling, roasting, grilling and frying) on levamisole residues in a range of fortified and incurred tissue was studied. No evidence of instability was obtained in any of the cooking methods investigated. Most observed net changes fell within the limits of the precision of the method once allowance for weight loss during cooking was made to c

The effect of cooking on veterinary drug residues in food. Part 8. Benzylpenicillin.

The stability of benzylpenicillin to heat and cooking was studied. Stability of this compound in water (at 100 degrees C and 65 degrees C), 5% ethanol, 5% sodium bicarbonate, pH 5.5 buffer at 100 degrees C and in hot cooking oil at 140 degrees C and 180 degrees C was established. Benzylpenicillin was stable at 65 degrees C but not stable at higher temperatures with half-life times varying between 15 and 60 min in the solutions investigated. This drug was not stable to cooking, losses being proportional to the harshness of the cooking regime. Where fluids were released during the cooking proces

Study Rapid, Quantitative, and Simultaneous Detection of Drug Residues and Immunoassay in Chickens.

Different levels of residual drugs can be monitored within a relatively safe range without causing harm to human health if the appropriate dosing methodology is considered and the drug withdrawal period is controlled during poultry and livestock raising. Antimicrobials are factors that can suppress the growth of microorganisms, and antibiotic residues in livestock farming have been considered as a potential cause of antimicrobial resistance in animals and humans. Antimicrobial drug resistance is associated with the capability of a microorganism to survive the inhibitory effects of the antimicr
