Horses can harbor a large amount of parasites that may cause serious clinical signs even death. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predatory activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans against infective larvae (L3) of gastrointestinal nematodes of horses in fecal culture. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treated groups (G1, G2 and G3) and one control (CG), using eight animals/group. The treated animals received G1: 1.5 × 10(5); G2: 3 × 10(5) and G3: 6 × 10(5) chlamydospores of D. flagrans/kg body weight during 21 days. The fungi preparation was given at ever

Four groups of nine Saanen goat does with a naturally acquired mixed trichostrongylid infection were grazed on four paddocks. Two groups received a daily dose of Duddingtonia flagrans at the rate of 5 x 10(7) chlamydospores per animal per day for the 26-day grazing period. After a 19-day pasture resting period, 20 worm free 12-week-old tracer kids were introduced to the paddocks for 14 days prior to removal for worm burden analysis. Four groups of five does and four kids were drenched then turned out onto the paddocks and faecal egg count (FEC) monitored. The FEC between groups was comparable

Gastrointestinal nematode infections represent one of the primary economic burdens for the global livestock industry. Duddingtonia flagrans (syn. Arthrobotrys flagrans) is the most promising biological control agent for these parasites due to its gastrointestinal-resistant chlamydospores (CL). However, industrial implementation is constrained by the lack of standardized mass-production protocols. This systematic review and bibliometric analysis consolidates evidence on culture media optimization to identify parameters maximizing CL yield, biomass accumulation, and enzymatic activity. The indiscriminate use of antiparasitics for the treatment of helminths in horses has caused the ineffectiveness of commonly used chemical active principles, therefore, new alternatives such as the use of helminthophagous fungi have been studied. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of the commercial formulation Bioverm, composed of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans strain AC001, in the reduction of gastrointestinal nematode larvae in equine feces. In coproculture, the genus Cyathostomum sp. was the most prevalent in the analyzed samples. The commercial formulatio

A field trial was conducted to evaluate the potential of the nematode-destroying fungus Duddingtonia flagrans to control free-living stages of horse strongyles. In late Spring 2 groups of horses (yearlings) with mixed infections of strongyles were allowed to contaminate 2 equal-sized pastures. One of the groups (F) received a daily dose of D. flagrans mixed in a feed supplement, while the other (C) received a similar amount of supplement without fungus. During a 3-month contamination period strongyle egg counts in faeces and number of infective strongyle larvae harvested from faecal cultures w

The presence of infective larvae (L3) of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites in pastures directly contributes to the constant recurrence of infections in ruminant herds. This study aimed to evaluate the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) (proteolytic crude extract and/or conidia) in the in vitro control of GIN L3 in coprocultures. To produce the proteolytic crude extract, a suspension (107 conidia/mL) of D. flagrans was inoculated into a liquid medium. After 6 days, the medium was filtered, centrifuged, and its proteolytic activity was measured. For the experimental assay

Three experimental assays with Duddingtonia flagrans (isolated AC001) were carried out. The growth of the genus Duddingtonia present in formulation of rice bran, its predatory capability on Oesophagostomum spp. infective larvae (L3) in petri dishes (assay 1), its action in faecal cultures with eggs of that parasite (assay 2) and isolate's capability of predation after passing through gastrointestinal tract of swine (assay 3) was evaluated. At assay 3, feces were collected at time intervals of 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 h after feed animals with the formulation. Assays 1 and 2 showed a statistical

Experiments to evaluate the potential ability of the nematode-trapping fungus Duddingtonia flagrans (Isolate CG768) to prey on the Ancylostoma spp. dog infective larvae (L(3)) in pasteurized soil were performed through several laboratory assays. A microcosm approach was used with increasing fungal concentrations in an inoculum of a chlamydospore water suspension. The highest fungal concentrations provide a more consistent larval reduction than the lowest concentrations, but no difference was observed from 10,000 to 25,000 chlamydospores per grain of soil. When using D. flagrans in a water susp

Duddingtonia flagrans is a nematode-trapping fungus that is widely used to control parasitic nematodes in livestock. After oral ingestion and passage through the digestive tract of animals, this microorganism captures nematodes in feces. Although many researchers have examined the safety of this fungus for humans, animals, and the environment, few reports have discussed the safety of nematode-trapping D. flagrans biologics for animals. In this study, D. flagrans safety was tested, while adverse effects and toxicities were examined in sheep. First, the nematode killing effects in naturally para

We evaluated the efficacy of Bioverm®, a commercial product containing Duddingtonia flagrans, on the control of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) gastrointestinal nematodes. We randomly divided 12 buffaloes into two groups of six animals. In the treated group, each animal received a Bioverm®`s single dose of 1g (105 chlamydospores of D. flagrans) to 10 kg of live weight; in the control group, each animal received 1g of corn bran for each 10 kg of live weight as a placebo. Fecal samples were individually collected from 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 h after treatments. To examine 1) viability of chlamydospo

The nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans is used in integrated management of gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants. The chlamydospores of the fungus, orally administered, pass through the segments of the ruminant digestive tract and, in the feces, capture the nematodes preventing their migration to grasslands. The drastic conditions of the gastrointestinal segments can negatively affect the fungus' biocontrol activity. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of in vitro conditions of the sheep's main gastrointestinal segments on the concentration, viability and nematode predator

Strongyloidiasis is the most clinically important disease among the infections caused by geohelminths, seeing that this parasite can cause autoinfection. The use of nematophagous fungi like Duddingtonia flagrans, that have predation action on eggs and infecciososas forms of helminths, emerges as an alternative method for environmental control. For this reason, analyzing the viability of larvae and eggs of Strongyloides venezuelensis and the action of Duddingtonia flagrans AC001 in vermiculite, as well as the action of the nematophagous fungi in different growth stages, is important to elaborat

The efficacy of the nematode-trapping fungus Duddingtonia flagrans incorporated into an energy block was evaluated for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. Four naturally parasitised sheep with average nematode egg counts of 2,470 eggs per gram grazed by pairs on two similar parasite-free paddocks for 30 days. During that period, one pair of sheep (treated animals, T1) received an energy block containing chlamydospores of D. flagrans at a dose of 200,000 chlamydopores/kg bw/day, while the second pair (control animals, C1) received a fungus-free energy block. The animals in both

The filtrate of the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans produces silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with nematicidal potential. However, there are currently no reports of its activity against Toxocara canis eggs. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential ovicidal activity of AgNPs-D. flagrans on T. canis eggs. T. canis eggs were obtained from the dissection of the uterus of adult female nematodes. After the biosynthesis of AgNPs, two experimental assays (A and B) were performed. In assay A, the ovicidal activity of AgNPs on eggs was evaluated after 15 and 30 days of interaction.

Providing dietary spores of Duddingtonia flagrans leads to fewer gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) larvae on pasture, but little is known about its interaction with dietary coccidiostats. The objective was to determine the efficacy of D. flagrans fed to sheep with or without coccidiostats, decoquinate (Study 1 and 2) or lasalocid (Study 3) to reduce the number of GIN larvae (predominantly Haemonchus contortus) in feces. All studies used a 2 × 2 factorial design (± D. flagrans × ± coccidiostat). Study 1: An in vivo experiment used 8 lambs/treatment and the recommended 5 × 105 chlamydospores/g car

Recently, research for alternative methods to combat gastrointestinal parasites has increased, and the biological control activity of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans stands out. In this study, the possible influence of temperature on the nematophagous activity of D. flagrans, after gastrointestinal passage, against Haemonchus contortus in sheep was analysed. Four female sheep, between 2 and 3 years of age and weighing between 40 and 50 kg, were used. Two sheep were parasitised with H. contortus, while two other sheep were dewormed. Before the collection of faeces, one of the dewormed animals

Duddingtonia flagrans is a nematode trapping fungus used for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in livestock. The quantity of chlamydospores of D. flagrans required for the reduction of third-stage larvae (L3) of sheep gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is largely unknown, and a matter of discussion. The aim of this experiment was to determine in vitro the nematophagous activity of four different concentrations of D. flagrans (1000, 3000, 6250, or 11000 chlamydospores/ml) in the presence of varying numbers of GIN third-stage larvae (L3) (500, 1000, 1500). Additionally, the study sought to
