Dysbiosis and extraintestinal cancers.

The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in safeguarding host health and driving the progression of intestinal diseases. Despite recent advances in the remarkable correlation between dysbiosis and extraintestinal cancers, the underlying mechanisms are yet to be fully elucidated. Pathogenic microbiota, along with their metabolites, can undermine the integrity of the gut barrier through inflammatory or metabolic pathways, leading to increased permeability and the translocation of pathogens. The dissemination of pathogens through the circulation may contribute to the establishment of an immune-sup

Microbial dysbiosis in cholangiocarcinoma.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a highly aggressive malignancy of the biliary epithelium, with its incidence and mortality rates continuing to rise worldwide. Advances in high-throughput sequencing and metabolomic technologies have intensified interest in elucidating the role of the microbiome in CCA. Microbial dysbiosis may contribute to tumor initiation and progression by inducing chronic inflammation, altering metabolic pathways, and modulating the immune microenvironment. Moreover, these microbial alterations have been associated with therapeutic resistance, underscoring their potential impact

Intestinal dysbiosis and colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for novel preventive and therapeutic strategies. Emerging research highlights the crucial role of the gut microbiota, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and their metabolites, in the pathogenesis of CRC. Dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalance in microbial composition, contributes to tumorigenesis through immune modulation, metabolic reprogramming, and genotoxicity. Specific bacterial species, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fr

Dysbiosis in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The human gut microbiota fosters the development of a dynamic group of microorganisms impacted by diverse variables that include genetics, diet, infection, stress, ingested drugs, such as antibiotics and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) as well as the gut microbiota itself. These factors may influence the change in microbial composition, which results in dysbiosis (microbial imbalance) and exposes the gut to pathogenic insults. Dysbiosis is incidental to the etiology of inflammatory diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and

Microbiota Dysbiosis in Fungal Rhinosinusitis.

Fungal rhinosinusitis is a unique phenotype of chronic rhinosinusitis with unique clinical and histological characteristics. The role of bacterial microbiota in various phenotypes chronic rhinosinusitis is not thoroughly understood. Therefore, we conducted 16s rRNA amplification sequencing to determine differences in bacterial communities between phenotypes (fungal vs. non- fungal) and anatomical sites (middle meatus vs. nasopharynx). Endoscope-guided swabs were used to collect samples from the middle meatus and nasopharynx of seven consecutive patients with fungal and 18 consecutive patients

Skin Dysbiosis Goes "Off-Leish".

There is increasing interest in the contribution of microbes to skin disease. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Gimblet et al. (2017) demonstrate that cutaneous leishmaniasis alters the human skin microbiota. In mice, this dysbiosis is transferable to naive animals, where it augments skin inflammation and disease severity.

Seminal dysbiosis in idiopathic male infertility: toward a seminal dysbiosis-inflammatory/oxidative endophenotype-SDF axis.

Idiopathic male infertility (IMI) usually refers to abnormal semen parameters after known causes have been excluded. However, its clinical stratification and intervention evidence remain difficult to reconcile. Based on low biomass in semen, this review proposes an SD-IO-SDF axis linking seminal dysbiosis (SD), inflammatory/oxidative endophenotype (IO), and sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) in subsets of IMI. It integrates three mechanisms of evidence strength: (i) inflammation-oxidative injury pathway (leukocyte-dependent); (ii) leukocyte-independent redox imbalance; and (iii) a metabolic-epigene

Gut dysbiosis and metabolic diseases.

Disruption in the composition of the gut microbial flora, the so-called gut dysbiosis, has been associated with and pathogenically implicated in a number of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as well as atherosclerosis. We describe the key finding in this domain in terms of the gut dysbiotic effects of obesogenic diets linked to metabolic dysregulations, the cross-talk between host genetics and gut ecology in preclinical models of metabolic syndrome as well as in humans, effect of circadian rhythm on gut microbiome, the regulation of systemi

Vaginal microbiome: normalcy vs dysbiosis.

It has been long understood that the vaginal microflora is crucial in maintaining a normal physiological environment for the host and its involvement is deemed indispensable for reproductive success. A global concept of normalcy vs. dysbiosis of vaginal microbiome is debatable as women of different races have a unique vaginal microflora with regional variations. Vaginal microflora is a dynamic microenvironment affected by gestational status, menstrual cycle, sexual activity, age, and contraceptive use. Normal vaginal flora is dominated by lactobacilli especially in women of European descent vs

[Intestinal dysbiosis and atherogenic dyslipidemia].

Numerous studies in recent years had proved pathogenetic correlation of the intestinal ecological community, not only with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract but also with diseases such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, urolithiasis and pyelonephritis, gallstones and hepatitis. In its role in maintaining homeostasis an intestinal microflora isn't inferior to any other vital organs. All this allowed to distinguish it as an independent body. Recently, as one of the most important factors for the development of dyslipidemia scientists consider breaking the functional state of the liver, as

Hyperoxia as a driver of gut dysbiosis.

The mammalian colon lumen exists in a highly anaerobic environment (oxygen partial pressure (PO2) < 1 mmHg), which promotes the growth of beneficial obligate anaerobes (OA) while limiting the expansion of pathogenic facultative anaerobes (FA). Gut dysbiosis is associated with a wide range of human diseases, and is often characterized by an overgrowth of FA, particularly those in the Enterobacteriaceae family. Oxygen (O2) plays a crucial role in bacterial physiology and ecology, and increased O2 availability is a key driver of gut dysbiosis. O2 therapy is commonly used for hypoxic patients, eit

Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota in disease.

There is growing evidence that dysbiosis of the gut microbiota is associated with the pathogenesis of both intestinal and extra-intestinal disorders. Intestinal disorders include inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and coeliac disease, while extra-intestinal disorders include allergy, asthma, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

Signature of Microbial Dysbiosis in Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is driven by disproportionate host inflammatory immune responses induced by an imbalance in the composition of oral bacteria; this instigates microbial dysbiosis, along with failed resolution of the chronic destructive inflammation. The objectives of this study were to identify microbial signatures for health and chronic periodontitis at the genus level and to propose a model of dysbiosis, including the calculation of bacterial ratios. Published sequencing data obtained from several different studies (196 subgingival samples from patients with chronic periodontitis and 422 subgin

Dysbiosis of the microbiome in gastric carcinogenesis.

The gastric microbiome has been proposed as an etiological factor in gastric carcinogenesis. We compared the gastric microbiota in subjects presenting with gastric cancer (GC, n = 12) and controls (functional dyspepsia (FD), n = 20) from a high GC risk population in Singapore and Malaysia. cDNA from 16S rRNA transcripts were amplified (515F-806R) and sequenced using Illumina MiSeq 2 × 250 bp chemistry. Increased richness and phylogenetic diversity but not Shannon's diversity was found in GC as compared to controls. nMDS clustered GC and FD subjects separately, with PERMANOVA confirming a signi

Psoriasis: microbiome dysbiosis and pathogenic mechanisms.

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease whose pathogenesis is a triad of genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, and environmental triggers. This review provides a novel, in-depth synthesis arguing that microbial dysbiosis is not merely an associative phenomenon but a central regulatory node within this triad, actively shaping immune responses and clinical phenotypes. We move beyond cataloging microbial shifts to construct a detailed mechanistic framework of the gut-skin axis. Gut dysbiosis; characterized by reduced diversity, a diminished Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes rat

Microbiome dysbiosis and alcoholic liver disease☆.

Microbiome dysbiosis is strongly associated with alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Recent studies on comprehensive analyses of microbiome compositional and functional changes have begun to uncover the mechanistic relation between microbiome and the pathogenesis of ALD. Importantly, targeting the microbiome has become a potential strategy for the prevention and treatment of ALD. In this review, we summarize the clinical evidence of microbiome dysbiosis in ALD patients, and experimental advances in microbiome and metabolomic functional changes in animals with different species and genetic backgroun
