Acquired dyslexia.

Disorders of reading are frequently encountered in patients with acquired cerebral lesions. Investigations in the past few decades have improved our understanding of these disorders. In this article we review the peripheral dyslexias, including neglect dyslexia, attentional dyslexia, and pure alexia (or alexia without agraphia), as well as the "central" dyslexias, including deep, surface, and phonological dyslexia. Current accounts of acquired dyslexia are also discussed. Finally, we briefly describe the reading tasks that serve to differentiate the different reading disorders.

Acquired spatial dyslexia.

Acquired spatial dyslexia is a reading disorder frequently occurring after left or right posterior brain lesions. This article describes several types of spatial dyslexia with an attentional approach. After right posterior lesions, patients show left neglect dyslexia with errors on the left side of text, words, and non-words. The deficit is frequently associated with left unilateral spatial neglect. Severe left neglect dyslexia can be detected with unlimited exposure duration of words or non-words. Minor neglect dyslexia is detected with brief presentation of bilateral words, one in the left a

Developmental and acquired dyslexias.

Marshall (1984) highlighted potential parallels between children with developmental disorders of reading and adults who had acquired reading disorders. He advocated the use of a cognitive neuropsychological framework in the investigation of children with developmental abnormalities of cognition, including those with developmental dyslexias. Developmental phonological dyslexia has been extensively described and is a pervasive disorder. The relationship between reading difficulty and phonological difficulties evident in explicit oral phonological tasks continues to be a focus for debate. Clear c

An investigation into early acquired dyslexia.

There are several group and case studies that investigate developmental dyslexia in children, and acquired and developmental reading disabilities in adults. To date however, there are few detailed investigations on cases of early acquired dyslexia. The purpose of this study was to examine such a case (participant referred to as SP). The goals of this investigation were to compare SP's reading impairments to the major subtypes of dyslexia, establish SP's specific reading deficits, and consider the neuropsychological variables that may impact on SP's reading disability.

Acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia in Chinese.

Understanding how the mappings between orthography and phonology in alphabetic languages are learned, represented and processed has been enhanced by the cognitive neuropsychological investigation of patients with acquired reading and writing disorders. During the past decade, this methodology has been extended to understanding reading and writing in Chinese leading to new insights about language processing, dyslexia and dysgraphia. The aim of this paper is to review reports of patients who have acquired dyslexia and acquired dysgraphia in Chinese and describe the functional architecture of the

Acquired crowding dyslexia: A peripheral reading deficit other than neglect dyslexia.

OBJECTIVES: Crowding refers to the phenomenon whereby small visual objects above the acuity threshold are detected but unrecognizable when surrounded by nearby stimuli. It affects reading in healthy individuals and can be enhanced in reading impairments. By increasing the interletter space, crowding decreases. Previous evidence on patients with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) and peripheral dyslexia has shown a dissociation in sensitivity to spacing manipulation between those who mainly produced omissions and those characterized by substitutions in reading. Here, we wanted to verify the hypot

Acquired dyslexias following temporal lesions.

The acquisition of reading by children is supported by deep changes in the brain systems devoted to vision and language. The left temporal lobe contributes critically to both systems, and lesions affecting it may therefore cause both peripheral vision-related and central language-related reading impairments. The diversity of peripheral dyslexias reflects the anatomical and functional division of the visual cortex into early visual regions, whose lesions have a limited impact on reading; ventral regions, whose lesions are mostly associated to Pure Alexia; and dorsal regions, whose lesions may y

Acquired dyslexias and the computational modelling of reading.

Two current approaches to the computational modelling of reading are the connectionist triangle model approach (parallel processing; distributed representations; models developed via a connectionist training algorithm such as backpropagation) and the DRC ("dual route cascaded") model (serial processing components permitted; local representations; model architecture specified by the modeller rather than acquired by a learning algorithm). One way of testing such computational models is to lesion the computer programs that instantiate the models and study how well the impaired reading of such dam

Acquired dyslexia in a Turkish-English speaker.

The Turkish script is characterised by completely transparent bidirectional mappings between orthography and phonology. To date, there has been no reported evidence of acquired dyslexia in Turkish speakers leading to the naïve view that reading and writing problems in Turkish are probably rare. We examined the extent to which phonological impairment and orthographic transparency influence reading disorders in a native Turkish speaker. BRB is a bilingual Turkish-English speaker with deep dysphasia accompanied by acquired dyslexia in both languages. The main findings are an effect of imageabilit

Eye movement correlates of acquired central dyslexia.

Based on recent progress in theory and measurement techniques, the analysis of eye movements has become one of the major methodological tools in experimental reading research. Our work uses this approach to advance the understanding of impaired information processing in acquired central dyslexia of stroke patients with aphasia. Up to now there has been no research attempting to analyze both word-based viewing time measures and local fixation patterns in dyslexic readers. The goal of the study was to find out whether specific eye movement parameters reflect pathologically preferred segmental re

Semantic Typicality Effects in Acquired Dyslexia: Evidence for Semantic Impairment in Deep Dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Acquired deep dyslexia is characterized by impairment in grapheme-phoneme conversion and production of semantic errors in oral reading. Several theories have attempted to explain the production of semantic errors in deep dyslexia, some proposing that they arise from impairments in both grapheme-phoneme and lexical-semantic processing, and others proposing that such errors stem from a deficit in phonological production. Whereas both views have gained some acceptance, the limited evidence available does not clearly eliminate the possibility that semantic errors arise from a lexical-s

Acquired dyslexia in Spanish: a review and some observations on a new case of deep dyslexia.

Readers and writers of Spanish use an orthography that is highly transparent. It has been proposed that readers of Spanish can rely on grapheme-phoneme correspondences, alone, to access meaning or phonology from print. In recent years, a number of case studies have yielded evidence inconsistent with this idea. We review these studies with particular focus on those that report evidence for reading based on direct lexical mappings between print, orthographic representations, and meaning or phonology. We report a new case of acquired literacy impairment in Spanish, MJ, who presents a pattern of p

Paying attention to reading errors in acquired dyslexia.

The important role of selective attention in normal reading is illustrated by a relatively rare form of acquired dyslexia known as 'attentional dyslexia'. Theories of the functional deficit underlying this disorder differ as to the locus of the attentional dysfunction. A recent study by Mayall and Humphreys has contributed to this debate by studying letter migration errors in an attentional dyslexic.

Lesioning an attractor network: investigations of acquired dyslexia.

A recurrent connectionist network was trained to output semantic feature vectors when presented with letter strings. When damaged, the network exhibited characteristics that resembled several of the phenomena found in deep dyslexia and semantic-access dyslexia. Damaged networks sometimes settled to the semantic vectors for semantically similar but visually dissimilar words. With severe damage, a forced-choice decision between categories was possible even when the choice of the particular semantic vector within the category was not possible. The damaged networks typically exhibited many mixed v

Connectionist neuropsychology: uncovering ultimate causes of acquired dyslexia.

Acquired dyslexia offers a unique window on to the nature of the cognitive and neural architecture supporting skilled reading. This paper provides an integrative overview of recent empirical and computational work on acquired dyslexia within the context of the primary systems framework as implemented in connectionist neuropsychological models. This view proposes that damage to general visual, phonological or semantic processing abilities are the root causes of different forms of acquired dyslexia. Recent case-series behavioural evidence concerning pure alexia, phonological dyslexia and surface

Diagnosis and rehabilitation attempt of a patient with acquired dyslexia.

UNLABELLED: Although dyslexia is a common consequence of brain damage there are few studies about therehabilitation of this disorder. Cognitive Neuropsychology models of reading have been used to describe severalsyndromes of acquired dyslexia. Phonological dyslexia is a reading disorder characterized by a dysfunctionalgrapheme-to-phoneme conversion procedure, which affects the ability to read low frequency words and nonwords. Lexical reading is preserved and patients can read frequent words (regular and irregular). OBJECTIVE: Verify the application of the cognitive model in the characterizati

The analysis of morphological errors in a case of acquired dyslexia.

An issue that is persistently raised in studies of subjects who produce morphological errors in reading and other tasks is whether these errors are the consequence of a morphological processing deficit, or whether they in any way reflect morphological principles of organization in the lexicon. We discuss the performance of one such subject on a number of tasks and evaluate standard arguments for attributing aspects of his performance to a morphological processing deficit. Although there are several features of his performance that are suggestive in this regard; we argue that, when these issues

The psycholinguistic analysis of acquired dyslexias: some illustrations.

Three approaches to the neuropsychology of cognitive function are distinguished: the neuroanatomical (where the primary concern is to correlate particular disorders of cognitive function with particular lesion sites), the 'general-cognitive' (in which associations are sought between impairments of performance on specific cognitive tasks and general disorders of broadly defined cognitive processes) and the model-building (in which one attempts to interpret the pattern of impairments and preservations of some cognitive function produced by brain damage in terms of an explicit model of the normal
