Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the ear are uncommon primary tumors. There is a reported debate in the literature as to the true nature of these tumors and how to classify them. However, there is a kind of consensus that they can represent a spectrum of a common entity with dual glandular and neuroendocrine differentiation. The differential diagnosis of these tumors is broad but their morphologic, immunohistochemical, and radiographic features help to differentiate them from other entities. The tumors have mostly bland histology and indolent biological behavior, yet they may recur and metastasize.

Ceruminous glands are modified apocrine glands located in the external auditory canal (EAC). Neoplastic lesions arising from these glands are rare in humans and constitute a major differential diagnosis for glandular neoplasms of the EAC. Due to anatomic restrictions, benign and malignant neoplasms present with similar symptoms and to some extent even comparable radiologic features, particularly when the tumors are localized. Biopsies are frequently limited by small size, fragmentation and improper anatomic and architectural orientation, thereby hampering our ability to appreciate the relation

Neoplasms of the upper respiratory tract and ear are tumors of visual localization; however, patients often go to specialized medical institutions in the presence of a widespread tumor process. This paper presents a brief overview of the most common benign and malignant tumors with localization in the oropharynx, nasopharynx, larynx and ear. The clinical picture, diagnosis and various treatment options are presented. Attention is paid to early diagnosis and the need for timely consultation with an oncologist and doctors of related specialties.

The objective of the present work was to estimate the potential of CT and MRI diagnostics of malignant neoplasms of the middle ear in the children. Diagnostics of these tumours encounters great difficulties. We analysed the main subjective and objective causes underlying these difficulties and accounting for the late detection of the pathology being considered. Special attention is given to the possibilities of using CT and MRI techniques for diagnostics of malignant neoplasms of the middle ear in the children. The differential radiodiagnostic criteria for malignant tumours are proposed.

Adenomas of the middle ear are rare benign glandular neoplasms arising from the middle ear mucosa. After previous operations 25 and 15 years before, a 67-year-old female complained about dizziness, tinnitus, and unilateral hearing loss on the left side. A tumor in the tympanum that was revealed by otoscopy could be removed completely. Histological examinations showed an adenoma of the middle ear with cholesteatoma. This was inconsistent with the histological result of the operation in 1983, which had described a hidradenoma. An exact analysis of the preparations confirmed that a middle ear ade

INTRODUCTION: Human Papilloma Virus has a strong relation to oropharyngeal mucosa and is considered to be responsible for a wide range of upper respiratory tract pathologies, like laryngeal papilloma. There's a hypothesis, that it plays a significant role in middle ear chronic inflammations and neoplasm's. MATERIAL AND METHODIC. The examination was carried on a group of 53 patients, 39 of which was suffering from granulation tissue chronic otitis media, 7-cholesteatomatous otitis media, 6--middle ear malignant neoplasm, and 1 middle and/or external ear benign neoplasm. AIMS: Papillary neoplasms of the middle and inner ear are rare and poorly characterised. The current World Health Organization classification divides them into two major subtypes: aggressive papillary tumours (APTs) and endolymphatic sac tumours (ELSTs). The aim of this article is to present two papillary neoplasms of the middle ear that do not fit into either the classic APT category or the classic ELST category, and compare them with three ELSTs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The patients were a 48-year-old female and a 59-year-old male without a history of other neoplasms. Histology showed papillar

BACKGROUND: Middle ear adenomatous neuroendocrine tumors (MEANTs) are rare temporal bone tumors. This study evaluates its clinical behavior and therapy outcome.
METHOD: Retrospective case review in a tertiary referral center evaluating histopathology, immunohistochemistry, treatment, and outcome.
RESULTS: Nine patients were diagnosed with MEANT. One patient presented with locally invasive tumor and underwent extensive en-bloc tumor resection with adjuvant radiotherapy. Seven of eight patients with locally non-aggressive tumor confined to the tympanomastoid space underwent tumor resection. Tw

Neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear is a rare tumor of the middle ear. The origins, as well as classification of the disease, are still controversial. We reported 2 cases of neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear separately in a 60-year-old male and a 48-year-old patient who both presented with hearing loss. This article reviewed the reported literatures and summarized the pathogenesis, clinical features, imaging manifestations, pathological features, and biological behavior of neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear, so as to improve the understanding of the disease.

Glandular neoplasms of the temporal-mastoid region and endolymphatic sac (ELS) are rare, and it is quite challenging to differentiate between an adenoma and an adenocarcinoma. ELS tumors (ELST) usually present with papillary, follicular, or solid patterns and can be further distinguished histologically and through immunohistochemistry. The microscopic features and clinical course of this neoplasm have been comprehensively explained by Heffner, who considered it "low-grade adenocarcinoma of likely ELS origin." The papillary form more commonly affects females, and it is a more aggressive form of

Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to evaluate external and middle ear disease and for surgical planning in dogs. However, there is limited literature regarding CT characteristics of benign and malignant canine external ear canal neoplasms. This retrospective, multicenter, secondary analysis, cross-sectional study compared the CT features of benign and malignant tumors in 39 dogs with 41 external ear canal masses by consensus of two veterinary radiologists. Recorded parameters were the presence of focal or multifocal tissue enlargement (mass/masses), lesion shape, location of the center

International incidence and mortality data for ICD rubric 160 (nose and nasal cavities, middle ear and accessory sinuses) are reviewed, the relative frequency data for cancer for each of the constituent anatomical locations presented and the histological types of neoplasms encountered tabulated to determine if geographical differences exist which might be worth further investigation. Relatively high rates for this generally rare disease were found in Asian and African populations, the highest age-adjusted rates, between 2.6 and 2.5 per 100,000 per annum, occurring in Japanese males. INTRODUCTION: Middle ear glandular neoplasms are infrequent causes of a middle ear mass. They can have exocrine and/or neuroendocrine differentiation. It is currently thought that these tumors are indistinguishable each from another. Herein, we present a new case of a middle ear glandular neoplasm. Our objective is to review all cases described in the literature in order to identify the clinical features, the gross pathology, the histopathology, the immunohistochemistry, to discuss the differential diagnosis, the treatment, the rate of recurrence, the follow-up, the incidence of metastasis, th

In the years 1962-1994, 20 patients were treated with a surgery because of malignant neoplasms of the middle ear. Pathomorphological examination showed rhabdomyosarcoma and squamous carcinoma. After surgery patients were treated supplementary Rtg-th. As a results of treatment 45% asymptomatic 5-years long survivals. A considerable advancement of the disease, late diagnosis and resulting from it nonradicality of the surgery influenced the results. Other reports and own observation advocate combined treatment: surgery and irradiation for radiosensitive malignant neoplasms of the middle ear.

Canadian patterns of morbidity and mortality from malignancies of the nasal cavities, the paranasal sinuses and the middle ear for the periods 1970-1980 and 1970-1984 have been examined. Age-standardized morbidity rates have not changed significantly during 1970-1980 for either males (P = 0.65) or females (P = 0.96). Analysis of age-specific morbidity rates revealed that rates of change for male rates have also remained stable during this period for all age groups studied (P greater than 0.29). For females, rates of change for seven of eight age groups examined also failed to achieve statistic

Microsecretory adenocarcinoma (MSA) of the salivary gland is a new entity recently added to the World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumors. This tumor is characterized by a recurrent MEF2C-SS18 translocation. We present a nodular tumor confined to the dermis of the ear canal of a 44-year-old patient, which demonstrated classic histopathologic features and molecular alteration of MSA. Specifically, the tumor was composed of numerous tubules and microcysts filled with abundant basophilic mucinous secretion and associated with a fibromyxoid stroma. The tumor cells were diffu

Between 1952 and 1986 the mortality from malignant tumours of the head and neck in the German Federal Republic shows a varying picture: a decline of cancer of the lip, equivocal rates for cancer of the nose and ear, increases for cancer of the tongue and of the larynx, a marked increase for cancer of the floor of the mouth and of the hypopharynx, a lesser increase for cancer of the tonsillar area and other parts of the mouth, but almost no increase for cancer of the salivary glands. The trends are similar for males and females, but the male:female ratio increased during the observation period.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare and aggressive haematological malignancy, typically characterised by cutaneous lesions and bone marrow involvement. We present a unique case of a woman in her 70s, initially seen for a spontaneous swelling on her left external ear resembling a haematoma, which recurred after initial treatment, triggering further evaluation.Diagnostic challenges arose as the patient displayed positive markers for Myeloperoxidase (MPO) (p-ANCA), suggesting vasculitis. Dermatology considered various differential diagnoses, but imaging and tests ruled
