Opportunities for respiratory disease transmission from people to chimpanzees at an East African tourism site.

Respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, present a serious threat to endangered wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) populations. In some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, chimpanzee tracking is a popular tourism activity, offering visitors a chance to view apes in their natural habitats. Chimpanzee tourism is an important source of revenue and thus benefits conservation; however, chimpanzee tracking may also increase the risk of disease transmission from people to chimpanzees directly (e.g., via aerosol transmission) or indirectly (e.g., through the environment or via fomites). This study assessed

Current gaps in management and timely referral of cardiorenal complications among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Middle East and African countries: Expert recommendations.

The upsurge of type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Africa (AFR) region, with cardiorenal complications (CRCs) being the predominant cause of premature morbidity and mortality. High prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors, lack of awareness among patients and physicians, deficient infrastructure, and economic constraints lead to a cascade of CRCs at a significantly earlier age in MENA and AFR. In this review, we present consensus recommendations by experts in MENA and AFR, highlighting region-specific challenges and potenti

Acculturation Style Is Associated with Stress and Tobacco Use among East African Immigrants.

While tobacco use rates are relatively high among East African immigrants in the U.S., factors contributing to this high rate are largely unknown. Acculturation is associated with stress and substance use. Whether acculturation styles are related to stress and current tobacco use has not been tested among this population. We conducted a cross-sectional study that included 376 East African adults who provided information on demographic background, acculturation style, acculturative stress, depressive symptoms, and tobacco use. Multivariate analysis indicated that individuals who were distant to

The impact of khat use on East African communities in Melbourne: a preliminary investigation.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Catha Edulis Forsk (khat) is a plant-reported to have a stimulant effect similar to that of amphetamines-grown and used by eastern African communities worldwide. Khat can be legally consumed in many parts of the world, including Victoria, Australia. Recent concerns have been raised about the social and economic impacts of khat consumption among Victoria's East African community members. This study explores khat use and the social impact it has on East African families and communities in Melbourne, Australia. DESIGN AND METHODS: Focus groups and individual interviews wer

East African diploid and triploid bananas: a genetic complex transported from South-East Asia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Besides bananas belonging to the AAA triploid Mutika subgroup, which predominates in the Great Lakes countries, other AAA triploids as well as edible AA diploids, locally of considerable cultural weight, are cultivated in East Africa and in the nearby Indian Ocean islands as far as Madagascar. All these varieties call for the genetic identification and characterization of their interrelations on account of their regional socio-economic significance and their potential for banana breeding strategies. METHODS: An extensive sampling of all traditional bananas in East Africa

Ethnobotanical study of traditional medicinal plants used by the local Gamo people in Boreda Abaya District, Gamo Zone, southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Medicinal plants have been used for centuries and are still relied upon by over 80% of the Ethiopian population. The people of Gamo, southern Ethiopia, have a rich cultural and traditional lifestyle with a long history of using plant resources for various uses including traditional herbal medicine. However, their traditional knowledge of traditional medicinal plants in Boreda Abaya District has not been explored Ethnobotanically yet, despite preserving diverse indigenous traditional medicinal plants. Hence, the study aimed to document and analyze traditional medicinal plants and as

Performance of a self-developed panel for biogeographic ancestry inference and dissection of the genetic background of three Tibetan groups.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we used a panel consisting of 56 autosomal ancestry-informative insertion/deletions (AIM-InDels) for biogeographic ancestry inference, three Y-InDels, and one Amelogenin gene, and verified its performance in Gannan Tibetan, Qinghai Tibetan, and Tibet Tibetan groups. Meanwhile, we analyzed the genetic structures of these three Tibetan groups. RESULTS: The results showed that 56 AIM-InDels performed better at classifying African and East Asian individuals without noisy labels compared with other intercontinental populations. By the addition of noisy labels, the SVM mod

Measuring refugees' capabilities: translation, adaptation, and valuation of the OxCAP-MH into Juba Arabic for use among South Sudanese male refugees in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Forcibly displaced populations are highly vulnerable to psychosocial distress and mental disorders, including alcohol misuse. In an ongoing trial that seeks to develop a transdiagnostic intervention addressing psychological distress and alcohol use disorders among conflict-affected populations, we will carry out a cost-effectiveness evaluation using a capability-based Oxford Capabilities Mental Health (OxCAP-MH) measure. The OxCAP-MH is a 16-item questionnaire developed from the Capability Approach, that covers multiple domains of functioning and welfare. The aim of the current pap

Multi-ancestry genome-wide association analyses of refractive error augment genetic discovery and polygenic prediction.

Refractive errors (REs) affect over half of the global population, with consequences ranging from blurred vision to blindness. Here we conducted ancestry-stratified and cross-ancestry meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies for RE in people of European (n = 1,495,159), East Asian (n = 121,172) and African (n = 144,737) ancestries. The cross-ancestry meta-analysis identified 932 RE-associated variants, including 241 previously unknown associations, four East Asian-specific associations and one African-specific association. Statistical fine-mapping pinpointed 16 high-confidence putative

A review on the potential sources and health implications of fluoride in groundwater of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Groundwater is a major source of drinking water for millions of people around the world. Over 400 million people in Africa depend solely on it as their main source of water supply. Fluoride is a common contaminant in groundwater. In low concentration (0.5-1.0 mg/L), fluoride is needed by humans for healthy development of bones and teeth, however, a concentration >1.5 mg/L has been linked with several fluorosis and non-fluorosis diseases. Dental and skeletal fluorosis are the major fluorosis diseases commonly reported with the consumption of fluoride-rich water. Although fluoride intake through

Association between telomere length and Plasmodium falciparum malaria endemicity in sub-Saharan Africans.

Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) varies significantly across human populations, with individuals of African ancestry having longer LTL than non-Africans. However, the genetic and environmental drivers of LTL variation in Africans remain largely unknown. We report here on the relationship between LTL, genetics, and a variety of environmental and climatic factors in ethnically diverse African adults (n = 1,818) originating from Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Cameroon. We observe significant variation in LTL among populations, finding that the San hunter-gatherers from Botswana have the longest

Chikungunya: an overview.

Chikungunya (CHIK),a mosquito borne debilitating disease,is caused by CHIK virus,an alphavirus belonging to the family Togaviridae. The sudden onset of very high fever along with rash, and severe arthralgia especially in the small joints of hands and toes are the characteristics of the disease. It was first reported from Tanzania in 1952-53 and spread subsequently to sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and Pacific causing large epidemics. The virus exists in three genotypes, the Asian, West African and East Central South African that are responsible for outbreaks in the respective areas. The fir

Lactase persistence alleles reveal partial East African ancestry of southern African Khoe pastoralists.

The ability to digest milk into adulthood, lactase persistence (LP), as well as specific genetic variants associated with LP, is heterogeneously distributed in global populations. These variants were most likely targets of selection when some populations converted from hunter-gatherer to pastoralist or farming lifestyles. Specific LP polymorphisms are associated with particular geographic regions and populations; however, they have not been extensively studied in southern Africa. We investigate the LP-regulatory region in 267 individuals from 13 southern African populations (including descenda

Oral health-related quality of life in the East African community: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Limited access to oral healthcare and substantial untreated cases raises concerns about the rising burden of oral conditions in East Africa. This scoping review aimed to map the existing evidence on oral health status in relation to oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) across the East African Community (EAC). METHODS: This scoping review was conducted based on the recommendations of Arksey and O'Malley's guidelines and reported based on the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Ten electronic databases were searched, using relevant keywords informed by the PCC (Population-Concept-Contex

HIV specific Th1 responses are altered in Ugandans with HIV and Schistosoma mansoni coinfection.

BACKGROUND: Fishing communities surrounding Lake Victoria in Uganda have HIV prevalence of 28% and incidence rates of 5 per 100 person years. More than 50% of the local fishermen are infected with Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni). We investigated the role of S. mansoni coinfection as a possible modifier of immune responses against HIV. Using polychromatic flow cytometry and Gran-ToxiLux assays, HIV specific responses, T cell phenotypes, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxic (ADCC) potency and titres were compared between participants with HIV-S. mansoni coinfection and participants with H

A new polygenic score for refractive error improves detection of children at risk of high myopia but not the prediction of those at risk of myopic macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: High myopia (HM), defined as a spherical equivalent refractive error (SER) ≤ -6.00 diopters (D), is a leading cause of sight impairment, through myopic macular degeneration (MMD). We aimed to derive an improved polygenic score (PGS) for predicting children at risk of HM and to test if a PGS is predictive of MMD after accounting for SER. METHODS: The PGS was derived from genome-wide association studies in participants of UK Biobank, CREAM Consortium, and Genetic Epidemiology Research on Adult Health and Aging. MMD severity was quantified by a deep learning algorithm. Prediction of
