Echinops davuricus Trevir. (Asteraceae) is a perennial medicinal herb. In this study, we sequenced and assembled its complete chloroplast genome. The plastome spans 153,168 bp with an overall GC content of 37.76%, showing a typical quadripartite structure. It encodes 131 genes in total, including 87 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 36 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and eight ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on whole plastomes strongly supports the monophyly of both Echinops and Cardueae. This work enriches genomic resources for Echinops and provides a valuable basis for its phylo

Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile components produced by the plant secondary metabolism and consist mainly of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes and, to a minor extent, of aromatic and aliphatic compounds. They are exploited in several fields such as perfumery, food, pharmaceutics, and cosmetics. Essential oils have long-standing uses in the treatment of infectious diseases and parasitosis in humans and animals. In this regard, their therapeutic potential against human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) has not been fully explored. In the present work, we have selected six medicinal and

Extracts from 30 plants of the Greek flora were evaluated for their antifungal activity using direct bioautography assays with three Colletotrichum species. Among the bioactive extracts, the dichloromethane extract of the radix of Echinops ritro (Asteraceae) was the most potent. Bioassay-guided fractionation of this extract led to the isolation of eight thiophenes. Antifungal activities of isolated compounds together with a previously isolated thiophene from Echinops transiliensis were first evaluated by bioautography and subsequently evaluated in greater detail using a broth microdilution ass

Echinops plants have received great attention for the treatment of many diseases due to pharmacological properties such as their antidiabetic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory characteristics. The major purpose of the present study was to investigate the cardioprotective benefits of Echinops cephalotes (Ech) against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Male Wistar rats were randomly allocated to three groups: sham, MI, and MI + Ech. The left coronary artery (LAD) was blocked for 30 minutes to induce MI. In the treatment group, rats were given 150 mg/kg/day of Ech extract for 28 day

The genus Echinops (Asteraceae family) consists of 120 species and is native to Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. This is the first study to use gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) to examine the dissimilarity of the aerial parts of Kanab’s fatty acid profiles of Echinops erinaceus Kit Tan, collected in March 2017 and extracted with 95% ethanol–water using Soxhlet method. A total of 42 components were identified, representing nearly all of the total metabolites detected with 100% of Sap. and Un, and 99.62% of TL. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial and cytotoxic pro

BACKGROUND: Toxicity and untoward effects are very ostensible in most standard drugs including antipyretic agents. Searching for conceivable antipyretic drugs with minimal toxicities and side effects from traditional plants is a growing concern to date. Echinops kebericho M. (Asteraceae) is one of the most prominent traditional medicinal plants, which is frequently testified for its traditionally claimed uses of treating fever and different infectious and noninfectious disorders by traditional healers in Ethiopian folk medicine. However, this plant has not been scientifically assessed for its

This study was performed to assess the potential β-lactamase inhibitory properties of nineteen crude Saudi plant extracts belonging to eight families against extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESβL) strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and other medically important pathogens. A total of 276 microbial isolates of pathogenic bacteria were used in this study; only 15 of them showed decreased sensitivity to one or several of ceftazidime, aztreonam, cefotaxime or ceftriaxone, which are deemed to be possible producers of ESβL. Antibacterial activities of plant extracts were carried out against ESβL positive

Malaria is one of the world's most severe endemic diseases and due to the emergence of resistance to the currently available medicines, the need for new targets and relevant antimalarial drugs remains acute. The crude extract, four solvent fractions and two isolated compounds from the roots of Echinops hoehnelii were tested for their antimalarial activity using the standard four-day suppressive method in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice. The 80% methanol extract exhibited suppression of 4.6%, 27.8%, 68.5% and 78.7% at dose of 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg respectively. The dichloromethane fractio

INTRODUCTION: Dengue fever, a vector borne disease transmitted primarily by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, has triggered a significant global resurgence. While many vector control programs depend on the use of chemical insecticides to curb outbreaks, its heavy reliance raises environmental concerns and the risk of insecticide resistance. Alternatively, botanically derived insecticidal agents with larvicidal properties offer an ecofriendlier option. This review aims to analyze scientific reports that described the effectiveness of plant-derived extracts for vector control.

The dichloromethane fraction of the crude ethanol extract of Echinops grijissi Hance roots exhibited different cytotoxicity against a panel of four human tumor cell lines, HepG2, K562, HL60 and MCF-7. By a bioassay-guided fractionation, eight thiophenes were isolated from the dichloromethane fraction, one of them was isolated from the plant for the first time. And they were assayed for their toxicity against the cell lines in order to compare their relative anti-tumor activity and find candidates of potential anti-tumor drugs. The dichloromethane fraction and isolated thiophenes showed differe

Hepatic insulin resistance is a crucial pathological process in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) associated with visceral adiposity and metabolic disorders. Echinops latifolius polysaccharide B (ETPB), a polysaccharide extracted from Echinops latifolius Tausch, increases insulin sensitivity in the high-fat diet-fed and STZ induced SD rat model and even prevented hepatic metabolic disorders. However, the mechanism by which ETPB improves carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms in the liver with insulin resistance remains largely unknown. In the present work, an lnsulin resistance cell model (IR-HepG2)
