In this study a new species of Echinochasnius (Dietz, 1909) is recorded for the first time in Egypt. Life cycle of one of gymnocephalous cercariae procured from Melanoides tuberculata snail was successfully completed in the laboratory. A total of 407 Melanoides tuberculata snails were collected from Mansouriya Canal, Giza Governorate. They were individually exposed to artificial light to determine natural infection with trematode larvae, Seven snails were found infected with gymnocephalous cercariae (infection index of 1.71). These cercariae were used to infect Gambusia affinis fish as second

Human cases of echinostomiasis have been sporadically diagnosed by extracting worms in the endoscopy in Korea and Japan. Most of these were caused by Echinostoma hortense infection. However, in the present study, we detected 2 live worms of Echinostoma cinetorchis in the ascending colon of a Korean man (68-year old) admitted to the Gyeongsang National University Hospital with complaint of intermittent right lower quadrant abdominal pain for 5 days. Under colonoscopy, 1 worm was found attached on the edematous and hyperemic mucosal surface of the proximal ascending colon and the other was detec

Spermatological characteristics of the digenean Hypoderaeum conoideum (Echinostomatidae) collected from Anas platyrhynchos in the Lac d'Annecy (France) were reinvestigated using transmission electron microscopy. The previous study on this species only describes the presence of two axonemes of unequal lengths, a mitochondrion, a posterior nucleus, and the disposition of cortical microtubules. The present ultrastructural study reveals that the mature spermatozoon of H. conoideum is a filiform cell tapered at both extremities. The sperm cell exhibits the characteristics of a digenean spermatozoa

In the present study, we analyse the effect of glycosylation in Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) antigens in antibody responses against the parasite in experimentally infected mice. It has been previously demonstrated that the mouse is a host of high compatibility with E. caproni and develops elevated responses of IgG, IgG1, IgG3 and IgM as a consequence of the infection, though the role of glycans in these responses remains unknown. To this purpose, the responses generated in mice against non-treated excretory/secretory antigens of E. caproni were compared with those observed

Patagifer Dietz, 1909 is revised and a key to the species is presented. P. oweni n. sp. is described from Threskiornis molucca (Cuvier) in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and distinguished from the related P. chandrapuri Srivastava, 1952 by: the shape of the pair of large angle spines (cudgel-shaped vs sub-rectangular); pointed (vs rod-shaped) marginal spines; a smaller body and internal organs; more anteriorly located testes; and larger eggs. The new species differs from P. brygooi Richard, 1964 in its larger body, head collar, suckers, pharynx and eggs, longer oesophagus and testes,

Human infection with Echinostoma aegyptica Khalil and Abaza, 1924 (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) is extremely rare. In this study, we confirmed E. aegyptica infection in 5 riparian residents living along the Mekong River in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The patients revealed eggs of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes, echinostomes, and other parasites in fecal examinations using the Kato-Katz technique. Following treatment with praziquantel 30-40 mg/kg and pyrantel pamoate 10-15 mg/kg in a single dose and purging with magnesium salts, adult specimens of various helminth species we

To study possible indirect effects of the infection with intestinal helminths, 12 Rattus norvegicus (Wistar) were each experimentally exposed to 100 metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni, and blood samples were taken weekly up to 4 weeks post-exposure for comparison with control rats. Values of haematocrit (HCT), red blood cells (RBC), platelets (PLT), white blood cells (WBC), haemoglobin (HGB) and haematimatrix indices, and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) were determined. In addition, leucocyte counts, including lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils

Laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) were infected with Echinostoma paraensei (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae). The rodents received 150 metacercariae each and blood samples were collected weekly until the fifth week of infection. The blood samples were analyzed for determination of haematocrit, total red blood cells with their dimensions, haemoglobin and haematimetric index (mean corpuscular volume, MCV; mean corpuscular haemoglobin, MCH; and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, MCHC) and platelets. Red blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin in the first week had significantly lower leve

Waterbirds, are one of the popular game animals and are of significant relevance to parasite spread due to their ability to fly and migrate great distances in relatively short periods of time. In Australia, however, the knowledge of parasites infecting native waterbirds is lacking with some of the last reports occurring over 50 years ago. The study aimed to characterise Echinostoma spp. infecting wild native Australian ducks found in the southern regions of the Murray Darling Basin (MDB). Ducks (n = 98) were collected from southern New South Wales within the MDB catchment. Three different spec

We intended to describe a case of chaunocephalosis and morphological characteristics of its causative agent, Chaunocephalus ferox, recovered from an oriental white stork, Ciconia boyciana, in the Republic of Korea. An oriental white stork was referred to the Wildlife Center of Chungbuk in Korea in February 2014 for severe depression with cachexia and it died the next day. At necropsy, the stomach was severely expanded and 7 thick-walled nodules were observed in the upper part of the intestine. Although the stomach was filled with full of foreign materials, the intestine was almost empty. The n

Adult specimens of Echinochasmus caninus n. comb. (Verma, 1935) (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) (syn. Episthmium caninum Yamaguti, 1958) were recovered from 11 riparian people who resided along the Mekong River in Khammouane Province, Lao PDR. In fecal examinations done by the Kato-Katz technique, the cases revealed eggs of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes, hookworms, and in 2 cases echinostome eggs. Over 4 years, only two known cases of fluke invasions were diagnosed in racing pigeons ( Columba livia ) originating from different regions of Poland. In both cases, the invasion was characterized by a very high mortality (approximately 70%), and the source of the infestation was snails of the Lymnaeidae family eaten by pigeons. Fluke invasions in pigeons are extremely rare and to date have not been described in Poland. Therefore, the occurrence of the symptoms of hemorrhagic diarrhea and sudden deaths of either adult pigeons or nestlings were suspected to be associated with poisoning. Autopsy

Echinostomes are a globally distributed group of digeneans with complex life cycles. In South America, many species are known only from definitive hosts, and in Argentina, most larval stages and adult records remain unlinked. Formal morphological descriptions and molecular data are essential for identifying larval stages; however, molecular reference sequences of larval digeneans remain scarce. We present an integrated morphological and molecular characterisation of echinostome cercariae from Biomphalaria aff. straminea collected between January 2017 and February 2018 in a rice field from Corr

Whether metacercariae of the digenean Himasthla elongata (Himasthlidae) are harmful to their secondary intermediate hosts, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a disputable question. To shed light on this issue, we performed field monitoring of the heart rate (HR) in mussels infected with H. elongata over a period of 1.5 years. We observed a significant rise in HR in infected mussels, but only 1 year after infection and at temperatures of 15-17 °C. HR variance also grew sharply in infected mussels within the same temperature range. We also detected a decreased ability of infected mussels to com

Isthmiophora hortensis (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) is a dominant echinostome in animal reservoir hosts and humans in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We intended to investigate the infection status with this echinostome species in the several species of wild animals and describe the morphological characteristics in the faunistic view point. A total of 175 animal carcasses belonging to 3 families, i.e., Canidae, Felidae and Mustelidae, were collected from the southern regions of Korea from March 2010 to July 2017. Isthmiophora spp. worms were recovered from the small intestines of each animal und

Trematodes in the family Echinostomatidae (Looss, 1899) are globally distributed parasites of both humans and wildlife. In North America, echinostomes are nearly ubiquitous in freshwater systems, where they commonly parasitize snails as their first intermediate hosts, aquatic hosts such as snails or tadpoles as second intermediate hosts, and waterfowl and semi-aquatic mammals as their definitive hosts. Our study expands on sampling efforts in the midwestern United States and contributes novel ND1, ITS2, and 28S sequences from 12 lineages of echinostomes in the genera Echinostoma, Echinoparyphi

An adult cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) caught in Kobe of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in December 1995 died of a severe infection associated with the trematode parasite Pegosomum sp. At necropsy, 22 trematode parasites were found in the lumen of the bile duct, and the duct wall was markedly thickened. Histopathologically, severe cholangitis and cholecystitis were observed in close association with the parasites in the bile duct. Severe Pegosomum sp. infection may be one of the factors contributing to the mortality of wild cattle egrets. This is the first reported case of the genus Pegosomum infecti

The course of infection of Echinostoma caproni was followed in female ICR mice, a permissive laboratory host, from infection to natural termination. Twenty-one mice were infected with 20 metacercariae via oral intubation and housed 3 per cage. Three mice from a randomly selected cage were necropsied at 1 mo intervals. A second group of 15 mice was infected approximately 1 yr later to replace mice negative at necropsy in the first group. Mice in the second group were examined weekly for the presence of eggs in the feces. Mice negative for eggs on consecutive days were killed and necropsied. The

Life cycles, and morphological and molecular data were obtained for Echinostoma chankensis nom. nov., Echinostoma cinetorchis, Echinostoma miyagawai and Isthmiophora hortensis from East Asia. It was established that, based on both life cycle and morphology data, one of the trematodes is identical to the worms designated as Euparyphium amurensis. Genetic data showed that this trematode belongs to Echinostoma. The complex data on biological, morphological and genetic characterizations establish that the distribution of the morphologically similar species, I. hortensis and Isthmiophora melis, in

Chaunocephalus ferox is an intestinal trematode infecting storks and is increasingly recognized as a potential threat to the conservation of the Oriental Stork (Ciconia boyciana). However, its evolutionary history remains poorly understood. In this study, we assembled and annotated the first complete mitochondrial genome of C. ferox using the MITOS2 and GeSeq platforms. The circular genome spans 17,482 bp and encodes 12 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs, with several intergenic overlaps and absence of the atp8 gene. Phylogenetic analyses based on 12 mitochondrial protein-coding genes
