BACKGROUND: Echium plantagineum, a native of Europe and Africa, is a noxious invasive weed in Australia forming monocultural stands in pastures and rangelands. It produces a complex mixture of bioactive secondary metabolites, including toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), that protect the plant from insect and livestock herbivory and naphthoquinones (NQs), which suppress competition from weeds, insects and pathogens, and also influence invasion success. However, the extent to which allelochemical production is impacted by environmental factors, thereby influencing plant defense against pests,

Comprehensive Profiling of Triglycerides in Wild Eastern Mediterranean Echium Seed Oil Using Paternò-Büchi Modulated Lipidomics.

Currently, ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which have become popular as dietary supplements, are limited by a shortage in supply. Thus, finding safe, effective alternatives is crucial. Echium seed oil (ESO), rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3ω-3) and stearidonic acid (SDA, 18:4ω-3), surpasses many other botanical seed oils. In this study, a pseudotargeted approach was applied to characterize the lipidomic profile of two unexplored Echium species from the Mediterranean region. Our findings established Echium glomeratum as a rich source of ω-3 fatty acids (FAs), exceeding many other sp

Eicosapentaenoic and Docosahexaenoic Acid Levels in Mouse Tissues After Intake of Echium and Ahiflower Oils Rich in Stearidonic and α-Linolenic Acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been consumed aiming to reduce cardiovascular disease. Fish oil is the main dietary source of EPA and DHA but has limitations that have stimulated interest in sustainable alternatives such as Echium ( Echium plantagineum ) and Ahiflower ( Buglossoides arvensis ) oils, both rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA) and stearidonic acid (SDA), precursors of EPA. However, the ability of these two oils to increase EPA and DHA levels in different tissues remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to invest

Extraction and Identification of the Bioactive Metabolites Produced by Curvularia inaequalis, an Endophytic Fungus Collected in Iran from Echium khuzistanicum Mozaff.

Endophytic fungi (EF) are microorganisms that colonize the internal tissues of host plants, providing a range of benefits to them. In this symbiosis, they act as a reservoir of bioactive metabolites that are important for enhancing the host's defense mechanisms as a resistance against pathogens. These molecules usually possess antimicrobial properties that can be exploited for application in agriculture and medicine. In this context, the current work was designed to evaluate the phytotoxic and antimicrobial properties of the endophytic fungus Curvularia inaequalis, isolated for the first time
