BACKGROUND: An increased frequency of hyperechogenic bowel on ultrasound has been reported in fetuses with cystic fibrosis (CF) and trisomy-21. However, the diagnostic application of this observation has been hampered by the absence of a means of measuring echogenicity.
METHODS: We devised an ultrasonic grading system in which echogenicity was quantified by linear gain reduction and comparison with fetal iliac crest. From 7400 second-trimester ultrasound referrals, 145 patients were identified as having a fetus with abnormally echogenic bowel. They were offered genetic counselling, parental a

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify antenatal prognostic factors of neonatal outcomes in cases of fetal echogenic bowel (FEB).
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study in three tertiary referral centers including fetal echogenic bowel over a 10-year period (from January 2003 to December 2013). The echogenicity of the fetal bowel was graded from 1 to 3, according to Slotnick's definition. Associated echographic findings such as bowel dilations, gallbladder abnormalities, calcifications, extra-abdominal abnormalities, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and a decrease in amniotic flu

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of cystic fibrosis, aneuploidy, and intrauterine infection with toxoplasmosis and cytomegalovirus in second-trimester fetuses with the sonographic finding of echogenic bowel.
STUDY DESIGN: All cases of echogenic bowel that were diagnosed in our ultrasound unit from 1993 to 2000 were identified. Only cases in which bowel echogenicity was as bright as bone with no associated major fetal anomalies were included. Patients who were referred from other hospitals were excluded. Echogenicity was classified as focal or multifocal. Fet

Though echogenic fetal bowel has been associated with meconium ileus and/or peritonitis, it may be a normal finding in the second trimester. The purpose of this study is to determine which characteristics might distinguish fetuses ultimately having abnormal outcomes in a population at low risk for cystic fibrosis. Seven fetuses with echogenic bowel were identified: 5 fetuses < or = 20 weeks gestation (group 1) and 2 fetuses 20-25 weeks gestation (group 2) at diagnosis. Four of 5 group 1 fetuses had resolution of the echogenic bowel during the second trimester. One group 2 fetus had a persisten

Clinical outcomes of 95 second-trimester fetuses prospectively considered to have echogenic bowel at ultrasound were compared with a control group of 110 consecutive second-trimester fetuses. Among the 95 fetuses in the study group, 64 (67%) had moderately echogenic (grade 2) or markedly echogenic (grade 3) bowel relative to the liver. Among the 110 fetuses in the control group, only two (1.8%) had moderately echogenic (grade 2) bowel; the rest (98.2%) had isoechoic (grade 0) or midly echogenic (grade 1) bowel relative to the liver. Adverse outcomes occurred in 45 of the 95 fetuses (47%) with

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors associated with intrauterine fetal demise in fetuses with unexplained echogenic bowel that is diagnosed in the second trimester.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case-control study compared fetuses with echogenic bowel and fetal demise with fetuses with echogenic bowel who were live born. Fetuses affected with cystic fibrosis, aneuploidy, or congenital infection and fetuses diagnosed with major anomalies were excluded. Variables examined in the determination of risk factors for intrauterine fetal demise included intrauterine grow

Previous studies cite different possible etiologies for fetal echogenic bowel (FEB). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible etiologies for second-trimester FEB, and to provide clinical guidelines for evaluation of this finding. The study included 79 patients diagnosed with FEB in the second trimester. Fifteen cases (19%) were associated with maternal vaginal bleeding. Of these, 12 patients underwent amniocentesis, 9 of which had visible blood products in the amniotic fluid. Seven cases (8.9%) had associated severe malformation. Seven other cases (8.9%) were noted in multifetal

Echogenic bowel is diagnosed in 0.2% to 1.4% of second trimester ultrasonographic examinations. This finding occurs as a normal variant in the second trimester but also has been associated with several pathologic conditions that include cystic fibrosis, chromosomal abnormalities and in utero infection with cytomegalovirus and toxoplasmosis. Ultrasound assessment of echogenic bowel is usually subjective by comparing the echogenicity with adjacent bone or liver. The diagnosis of fetal echogenic bowel in the second trimester has significant implications for prenatal management. Fetal echogenic bo

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the extent that associated findings aid in the differential diagnosis and/or prognosis of fetal echogenic bowel.
METHODS: Medical history, obstetric records and outcome details were examined for 131 consecutive pregnancies with fetal hyperechogenic bowel.
RESULTS: In 62 (47%) cases, there were no visible anomalies other than hyperechogenic bowel and no evidence of growth restriction. This group included four (7%) pregnancies with Down syndrome, 15 (24%) with infection or a recent episode of influenza and eight (13%) with blood staining of amniotic fluid. In the remain

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of cystic fibrosis mutations and chromosome abnormalities in the fetuses of a heterogeneous population of pregnant women referred for prenatal testing for echogenic fetal bowel.
METHODS: Fetal or parental samples obtained after a second-trimester sonographic finding of echogenic fetal bowel were submitted to a referral diagnostic laboratory during a 2-year period. Results of DNA testing and karyotyping on these samples were analyzed to determine the prevalence of cystic fibrosis transmembrane reductase gene mutations and chromosome abnormalities.

Echogenic bowel is a 'soft marker' on prenatal ultrasound, which can be associated with a variety of conditions including chromosomal disorders, intrapartum infections, antepartum events and cystic fibrosis. Identification of this marker should prompt a further search for other soft markers, structural defects and placental abnormalities. We explore three cases of echogenic bowel identified on routine ultrasound scan. The first case highlights the potential for echogenic bowel to be a benign feature. Echogenic bowel was identified at eighteen weeks, which was attributed to intra-amniotic haemo

A 3.5-kilogram infant was born at 40 weeks gestation with an uncomplicated delivery. Prenatal ultrasounds showed echogenic bowel and a ventricular septal defect (VSD), of no clinical significance. Abdominal radiographs showed pneumatosis at 21, 36, and 48 hours of life (HOL). She was treated for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) with intravenous antibiotics and parenteral nutrition for 7 days, before working up on feeds and discharging home with breast milk. The only prenatal finding in this case was hyperechogenic bowel, which is a soft marker and often disregarded in the absence of other signs

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an algorithm for pediatricians to use for infants diagnosed with fetal echogenic bowel (FEB) to ensure that each patient is fully evaluated for possible complications while avoiding unnecessary morbidity and mortality and health care-associated costs.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort of neonates for which a diagnosis of FEB was made during a Level 2 anatomy ultrasound between February 2016 and January 2017. Women diagnosed with FEB were offered perinatal genetic counseling and testing. These women also received increased third trimester fetal

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the outcome at birth for fetuses in which echogenic dilated bowel loops (EDBL) are detected before 21 weeks of gestation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken of 45 patients with EDBL. Sonographic criteria included dilated bowel with an echogenic wall. EDBL was divided into two categories: the isolated and the complex (associated with other abnormalities). When the EDBL affected only one quadrant of the fetal abdomen, it was referred to as the local form, and when it was observed in more than one quadrant, it was ter

The main aim of this systematic review was to explore the outcome of fetuses with isolated echogenic bowel (EB) on antenatal ultrasound. Inclusion criteria were singleton pregnancies with isolated EB no associated major structural anomalies at the time of diagnosis. The outcomes observed were: chromosomal anomalies, cystic fibrosis (CF), associated structural anomalies detected only at follow-up scans and at birth, regression during pregnancy, congenital infections, intra-uterine (IUD), neonatal (NND) and perinatal (PND) death. Twenty-five studies (12 971 fetuses) were included. Chromosomal an

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) fetuses with echogenic bowel and high resistance in the umbilical artery and increased risk of developing neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis.
METHODS: We analyzed two groups: group 1, singleton IUGR fetuses with echogenic bowel or reversed diastolic flow in the umbilical artery, and group 2, neonates who were diagnosed as having neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis. In group 1, the pulsatility index of the superior mesenteric artery and celiac trunk were determined. In group 2, a retrospective analysis was

BACKGROUND: Echogenic and/or dilated bowel is uncommonly encountered on prenatal ultrasound and may represent either a panel of differential diagnoses or a transient normal variant with excellent outcome. Prenatal differentiation between the two entities remains uncertain. Here, we aimed to review prenatal cases associated with echogenic and/or dilated bowel and analyze their prospective perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study, carried out at a single center. All relevant data was retrieved from the hospital electronic records. Bowel echogenicity is defined as grade
