The present study deals with the investigation of standardized and phytochemically evaluated aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of the plant Eclipta alba for sedative, muscle-relaxant, anxiolytic, nootropic and anti-stress activities. The hydrolyzed fraction of the aqueous extract was also subjected to similar studies in rats. OBJECTIVE: To study the pharmacologically active components of Eclipta prostrata.
METHOD: The components were extracted by alcohol and isolated by silica gel column and subjected to pharmacological screening.
RESULT: Four compounds were isolated from E. prostrata, of which two were identified as stigmasterol and alpha-terthienyl.
CONCLUSION: alpha-Terthienyl was isolated from the plant for the first time. The EtOAc part of alcoholic extraction exhibits significant hepatoprotective activity against carbon terachloride-induced liver injury in rats.

Eclipta alba (Family-Asteraceae) is a commercially important plant whose extract is used in numerous marketed formulations as one of the major ingredients. Most of the industries use conventional extraction techniques without considering the marker content extracted. Therefore, the present study was planned to optimize the extraction process for E. alba Linn. using response surface methodology. The powdered plant material was extracted by Soxhlet, reflux, maceration and ultrasonication using four solvents namely acetone, ethanol, 50% aqueous ethanol and 80% aqueous ethanol for each technique.
