BACKGROUND: A person's ability to adapt to a given context is a critical determinant of mental health and psychopathology, which has been redefined by network approaches and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). This study examined whether including adaptive processes in EMA enhances the informational value of idiographic network models.
METHOD: Forty-five university students participated in a multi-week EMA protocol assessing psychological dimensions using bipolar visual analogue scales ranging from maladaptive to adaptive. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one assessed onl

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is marked by increases in autonomy, establishment of health behaviors, and changes in self-regulation. Numerous facets of adolescents' eating behavior occur in the context of increased autonomy, including food choices when apart from parents/caregivers, on weekend times with less structure than the school week, and during snacking occasions (versus meals). While previous studies have examined situations with assumed autonomy differences, ours is the first to directly examine eating autonomy in adolescents' food choices, using a momentary design.

IMPORTANCE: Existing patient-reported outcome measures of tinnitus assess the severity and disability retrospectively, which may result in adequate reliability, but cannot capture the fluctuating and individualized nature of tinnitus. Experience sampling may provide an alternative.
OBJECTIVE: To use an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to measure tinnitus disability and associated constructs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Forty adults with tinnitus provided self-report of their tinnitus bother using 5 questions measured by EMA, as well as standard retrospective outcome measures. In

Health research has shifted from a disease-centered approach towards emphasizing functioning and more specific lived health. Lived health, the actual performance of daily activities in one's environment, has nevertheless received limited attention, and its assessment remains methodologically challenging. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), a real-time method capturing behaviors, emotions, and context in natural settings, holds promise in this regard. Although EMA research is increasing, insight into its use for studying daily activities is still limited. To address this gap, this study syst

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study evaluated the feasibility of ecologic momentary assessment (EMA) to measure five eating disorder behaviors and to examine reactivity of these behaviors to this measurement approach. The pattern of correspondence between EMA and the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) was also examined.
METHODS: Women with threshold or subthreshold anorexia and bulimia nervosa (N=16) recorded their eating disorder behaviors for 4 weeks on a hand-held computer. Upon completion of the EMA procedure, the EDE was administered.
RESULTS: Eighty-eight percent of the sample completed the EMA

OBJECTIVE: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is increasingly used to monitor depressive symptoms in clinical trials, but little is known about the comparability of its outcomes to those of clinical interviews and questionnaires. In our study, we administered EMA and questionnaires to measure change in depressive symptoms and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) in a clinical trial and investigated (a) the size of intervention effects associated with both techniques and (b) their validity in predicting clinical interview outcomes (i.e., global functioning).

OBJECTIVES: Because audiometric evaluation, symptom histories, questionnaires, and similar standard assessment tools may not adequately sample the effects of chronic tinnitus on day-to-day activities, there is a need for alternative methodological approaches to study the impact of tinnitus on day-to-day life. An innovative methodological approach that has shown great promise in the study of chronic health problems characterized by reported temporal and/or situational variability in symptoms and distress is known as ecological momentary assessment (EMA). EMA involves the real-time measurement o

Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom often experienced during and following cancer treatment. An Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) approach was used to examine the diurnal pattern of off-treatment fatigue in breast cancer survivors. Twenty-five breast cancer (BC) survivors 6-26 months posttreatment and age-matched groups of healthy women (HC; n = 25) and women with benign breast problems (BBP; n = 24) completed four daily diary measures of fatigue, pain, and mood for 5 consecutive days. Type of activity engaged in at the time of the diary assessments, as well as daily pedometer act

Appearance anxiety for social media users (AASMU) is emotional distress linked to social media use (SMU), negatively affecting mental and physical health. However, little is known about the dynamic relationship between AASMU and SMU, and effective interventions. Study 1 used Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) with 206 participants completing daily surveys for 20 days. Dynamic structural equation modeling (DSEM) revealed that AASMU tended to persist from 1 day to the next (β = 1.45) and that higher levels of AASMU and SMU often occurred together on the same day (β = 2.57). A higher level of

PURPOSE: No consensus exists regarding the examination methods and assessment criteria for awake bruxism (AB). In this study, masticatory muscle activity measured using electromyography (EMG) was recorded simultaneously with the ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of bruxism events. Data were collected to identify distinctive EMG parameters in AB.
METHODS: A total of 104 individuals were classified into the bruxism (BR) or control (CO) groups based on clinical findings. The participants recorded EMA on a tablet device under continuous EMG recording using a data log-type wireless EMG device.

We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to track symptoms during a clinical trial. Thirty-six participants with major depressive disorder (MDD) and MADRS scores ≥20 were enrolled in a nonrandomized 6-week open-label trial of commercially available antidepressants. Twice daily, a mobile device prompted participants to self-report the 6 items of the HamD6 sub-scale derived from the Hamilton rating scale for depression (HamD17). Morning EMA reports asked "how do you feel now" whereas evening reports gathered a full-day impression. Clinicians who were blinded to the EMA data rated the MADRS,

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a data collection method involving real-time, repeated sampling of behavior in the natural environment. Having gained traction over the years in areas of psychology and public health, EMA's application in individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABIs) is now beginning to be explored. Our review aims to introduce ABI researchers to EMA and the work conducted to date, specifically in traumatic brain injury and stroke cohorts. First, we outline the essential methodological components used, including sampling schemes, measures, and statistical analyses. Se

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a measurement methodology that involves the repeated collection of real-time data on participants' behavior and experience in their natural environment. While EMA allows researchers to gain valuable insights into dynamic behavioral processes, the need for frequent self-reporting can be burdensome and disruptive. Compliance with EMA protocols is important for accurate, unbiased sampling; yet, there is no "gold standard" for EMA study design to promote compliance.

This study examined the function of hoarding behaviors and the relations between hoarding and a series of cognitive and affective processes in the moment using ecological momentary assessment. A matched-groups design was used to compare college students with higher hoarding symptoms (n = 31) and matched controls (n = 29). The two groups did not differ in what function they reported acquiring served, and positive automatic reinforcement was the most commonly reported function in both groups. Engaging in hoarding-relevant behaviors did not predict change in positive or negative affect when contr
