Cultivation of plants in space: their contribution to stabilizing atmospheric composition in closed ecological systems.

Higher plants in biological life support systems (BLSS) not only supply man with food, accomplish recirculation of major gases (CO2 and O2) and reclaim water, they also help remove toxic impurities produced by the ecological system components from the atmosphere of the system. Experiments to study the effect of SO2 on mixed canopies of agricultural plants with pulsing and continuous supply of gas into a sealed volume of the ecosystem showed that gaseous toxic substances can be a) passively absorbed by biologically inactive components of the system, b) actively absorbed and processed by plants.

Soilless farming system design impacts the diversity and composition of microbiota.

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA), including soilless farming systems, is expanding to improve food security and resource efficiency. However, little is known about how different soilless farming system designs influence microbial populations that may be relevant to plant health and food safety. This study investigated the effects of soilless system type on microbial load and bacterial community composition in nutrient solution and on bok choy leaves over two growing cycles. Soilless systems, including deep water culture (DWC), Kratky (KR), nutrient film technique (NFT), ebb and flow (E

Design of a modular controlled unit for the study of bioprocesses: Towards solutions for Bioregenerative Life Support Systems in space.

Space exploration beyond the Low Earth Orbit requires the establishment of Bioregenerative Life Support Systems (BLSSs), which, through bioprocesses for primary resource recycling, ensure crew survival. However, the introduction of new organisms in confined space habitats must be carefully evaluated in advance to avoid unforeseen events that could compromise the mission. In this work, we have designed and built an experimental chamber, named Growing/Rearing Module (GRM), completely isolated and equipped with micro-environmental monitoring and control systems. This unit is specially intended fo

[Physiological and ecological characteristics of Azolla pinnata and its possible use in biological life support systems].

The principal physiological and ecological characteristics of Azolla pinnata were investigated in order to determine its potential use in biological life support systems. Plant requirements for biogenic elements were specified in order to develop balanced nutrient mixtures for continuous cultivation. Data on the growth and development, photosynthetic and nitrogen fixation rate, and biochemical composition of the plant were obtained for optimal cultivation conditions. The plant biomass contains large quantities of carotenoids and sulfur-containing amino acids, which are deficient in unicellular

The influence of N2-O2 and He-O2 saturation diving on electroencephalogram of human bodies.

This paper reports the changes of the EEG of human bodies during saturation exposure at different depths to different mixed gases. The results of the research show that the most obvious on EEG was the appearance of diffused slow waves, usually theta waves of 4-7 times/s, and delta waves of 2-3 times/s within individual subjects. The EEG changes at 50 m were more obvious than those at 36.5 m. With the prolonging of time under high pressure, the EEG had some improvements, for instance, the slow waves decreased and the alpha waves increased. There was a certain relationship between these changes

Biodegradation and ecotoxicity of HFCs and HCFCs.

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are used or developed as substitutes for fully halogenated chlorofluorocarbons. Based on the results of closed-bottle tests, the biodegradation of HFC-32, HCFC-123, HCFC-124, HFC-125, HFC-134a, HCFC-141b, HCFC-225ca, and HCFC-225cb was less than 60% after 28 days and therefore these compounds are considered not readily biodegradable. Standard acute toxicity tests with HCFC-123, HCFC-141b, and HCFC-225ca using algae, water fleas, and fish revealed EC50 values in the range of 17-126 mg/L. EC50 values of HFC-134a ranged between 450-98

Selection and characterization of bacterial consortia for the degradation of space organic waste.

Planned human exploration beyond low Earth orbit involves establishing long-term Moon and Mars settlements. Due to the impracticality of continuous resupply from Earth for such missions, it is crucial to develop systems that allow partial or complete in situ recycling of resources necessary for human survival, such as Bioregenerative Life Support Systems (BLSSs), closed artificial ecosystems providing oxygen, food, and water. Microorganisms can play an important role in BLSSs for space missions by producing oxygen, removing carbon dioxide, and degrading organic waste such as food scraps, inedi

The potential use of microalgae for nutrient supply and health enhancement in isolated and confined environments.

Exploring isolated and confined environments (IACEs), such as deep-sea ecosystems, polar regions, and outer space, presents multiple challenges. Among these challenges, ensuring sustainable food supply over long timescales and maintaining the health of personnel are fundamental issues that must be addressed. Microalgae, as a novel food resource, possess favorable physiological and nutritional characteristics, demonstrating potential as nutritional support in IACEs. In this review, we discuss the potential of microalgae as a nutritional supplement in IACEs from four perspectives. The first sect

Psychosocial factors affecting simulated and actual space missions.

As space missions become longer and broader in scope, and as crews become more heterogeneous, psychological and interpersonal factors will take on increasing importance. In order to isolate instructive psychosocial issues and trends, a review was made of over 60 American and Russian simulation and spaceflight studies and reports. Although the missions accomplished most of their goals, psychological and social stresses were evident in the crew members. Psychosocial problems tended to relate to mission length. There was evidence that the use of appropriate psychological testing and interpersonal

Problem of reproduction of food protein by autotrophic organisms in extraterrestrial conditions.

To supply a man during his prolonged stay in extraterrestrial space with dietary protein by storing it in space vehicles seems to be impractical. Protein reproduction could be realized at present only by biosynthesis, which is possible with the autotrophic organisms and is the most economic, universal and therefore quite possible for use in life-support systems. In the paper, experimental results are presented on the biological value of single-celled algae proteins. The results obtained suggested that algae biomass in human rations could not be used in quantities needed for turnover of the com

[Development of salt concentrates for mineralization of recycled water aboard the space station].

Recycled water can be brought up to the potable grade by adding minimal quantities of three soluble concentrates with the maximal content of inorganic salts. The authors present results of 3-year storage of potable water mineralized with makeup concentrates and analysis of potable water prepared with the use of the salt concentrates stored over this period of time. A water mineralization unit has been designed based on the principle of cyclic duty to produce physiologically healthy potable water with a preset salt content.

Solid waste management and resource recovery during the 4-crew 180-day CELSS integrated experiment.

In order to explore the management and treatment methods of solid waste in the Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) of future lunar bases, during the 4-crew 180-day integrated experiment, the Solid Waste Management and Treatment System (SWMTS) was built, in which the treatment of recyclable solid waste such as inedible plant parts and human excrement was completed through a combination of biological aerobic composting and high-temperature oxidation. Basic data on the types and amounts of solid waste generated during the 4-crew 180-day experiment mission were obtained. There were s

Evaluation of two fiber optic-based solar collection and distribution systems for advanced space life support.

Growing plants in an enclosed controlled environment is crucial in developing bioregenerative life-support systems (BLSS) for space applications. The major challenge currently facing a BLSS is the extensive use of highly energy-intensive electric light sources, which leads to substantial energy wastes through heat dissipations by these lamps. An alternative lighting strategy is the use of a solar irradiance collection, transmission, and distribution system (SICTDS). Two types of fiber optic-based SICTDS, a Fresnel-lens Himawari and a parabolic-mirror optical waveguide (OW) lighting system, wer

Dissolution kinetics of iron-, manganese-, and copper-containing synthetic hydroxyapatites.

Micronutrient-substituted synthetic hydroxyapatite (SHA) is being evaluated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Advanced Life Support (ALS) Program for crop production on long-duration human missions to the International Space Station or for future Lunar or Martian outposts. The stirred-flow technique was utilized to characterize Ca, P, Fe, Mn, and Cu release characteristics from Fe-, Mn-, and Cu-containing SHA in deionized (DI) water, citric acid, and diethylene-triamine-pentaacetic acid (DTPA). Initially, Ca and P release rates decreased rapidly with time and were c

Incineration of biomass and utilization of product gas as a CO2 source for crop production in closed systems: gas quality and phytotoxicity.

This study addressed the recycle of carbon from inedible biomass to CO2 for utilization in crop production. Earlier work identified incineration as an attractive approach to resource recovery from solid wastes because the products are well segregated. Given the effective separation of carbon into the gaseous product stream from the incinerator in the form of CO2 we captured the gaseous stream produced during incineration of wheat inedible biomass and utilized it as the CO2 source for crop production. Injection rate was based on maintenance of CO2 concentration in the growing environment. The c

Crewmember microbiome may influence microbial composition of ISS habitable surfaces.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a complex built environment physically isolated from Earth. Assessing the interplay between the microbial community of the ISS and its crew is important for preventing biomedical and structural complications for long term human spaceflight missions. In this study, we describe one crewmember's microbial profile from body swabs of mouth, nose, ear, skin and saliva that were collected at eight different time points pre-, during and post-flight. Additionally, environmental surface samples from eight different habitable locations in the ISS were collected fr
