The Influence of Economic Stability on Neonatal and Family Well-Being.

Economic stability is one of the five domains of determinants of health influencing the well-being of families and communities. In this column, the impacts of economic instability, including poverty, employment, food insecurity, and housing instability, will be described. These challenges have unique impacts during pregnancy and the early years, with inequitable and accumulating health burdens over a lifetime. Actions that nurses can take within the NICU setting are described and opportunities for community and policy advocacy are identified.

Predictors of Health in Substance Use Disorder Recovery: Economic Stability in Residential Aftercare Environments.

The exit from active substance use presents barriers to achieving and maintaining health, especially as individuals lack the economic resources to afford healthcare access. Treatment settings that strengthen resources may support stability in recovery and influence health. Analyzing a sample of recovery home residents over two years (N = 494), the current study assessed individually held resources (e.g., wages, employment) and the average economic conditions of a resident's house (e.g., house employment rate) to understand their association with self-reported health status. Employment status,

Effect of Financial Education and Coaching on Economic Stability in Low Income, Single Mother Families.

Up to 85% of health is governed by social determinants such as economic stability. By supporting healthy financial behavior changes to increase economic stability, the Financial Success Program (FSP) is a modality that also addresses the limitations of other health interventions in single mother, low-income households. The novel FSP financial education/coaching intervention has previously been shown to reduce financial strain and perceived effects of financial strain on health, improve relationships, reduce smoking and increase healthcare access. This manuscript reports the financial and econo…

Disparities in healthcare utilization and access by measures of economic stability among female cancer survivors in Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic minorities and economically disadvantaged populations may underuse healthcare throughout cancer survivorship. We explored associations between race/ethnicity, economic stability, and healthcare utilization among female cancer survivors. METHODS: Survey data were analyzed for 1633 females with a self-reported history of cancer who completed the Maryland Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey between 2011 and 2020. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between sociodemographic factors and healthcare utilization were estimated utilizing mul…

Hierarchical Governance in Public Crisis: A Differential Game Analysis of Epidemic Containment, Economic Stability, and Transition Timing.

In the complex scenario of a major epidemic, apart from the superior government's efforts to promote policy implementation through political incentives and fiscal transfer payments, local governments must strive to balance the inherent tension between public health containment policies and economic stability objectives. In addition, they must carefully select the appropriate transition timing from the emergency response phase to the routine management phase. Considering the hierarchical governance structure and the strategic dynamic decision-making processes involved, this paper examines the e…

The Effects of Extreme Climate Events on Healthcare Access, Mental Health, and Economic Stability Among PLHIV in Brazil.

Climate change and HIV are intersecting crises, yet their combined impact on Latin America's HIV care continuum remains understudied. Using a descriptive cross-sectional design with data from the 2024 Brazilian HIV Stigma Index, we examined the consequences of extreme climate events-primarily the May 2024 floods in Porto Alegre-on healthcare access, mental health, and socioeconomic stability among 156 people living with HIV. These events were associated with substantial care disruptions, with many participants reporting rescheduled or canceled medical appointments and laboratory monitoring. Fu…

Does the implementation of economic policies connected to climate change depend on monetary policy mandates and financial stability governance structures?

The objective of the proposed research study is to examine how the economic policy mandates and governance frameworks of central banks affect the implementation of climate-related economic measures. Empirical evidence supports a positive correlation between the adoption of climate-related economic policies and a broader mandate for monetary policy. The existing body of research contradicts the idea that an enhanced framework for governing economic stability will result in higher implementation of financial measures related to climate change. The study, which focuses on China from 2015 to 2023,…

Health, environmental, and economic costs from the use of a stabilized diesel/ethanol mixture in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.

In Greater Metropolitan São Paulo, Brazil, fossil fuel combustion in the transportation system is a major cause of outdoor air pollution. Air quality improvement requires additional policies and technological upgrades in fuels and vehicle engines. The current study thus simulated the environmental and social impacts resulting from the use of a stabilized diesel/ethanol mixture in the bus and truck fleet in Greater Metropolitan São Paulo. The evaluation showed reductions in air pollutants, mainly PM10, which would help avert a number of disease events and deaths, as estimated through dose-respo

Clinical and economic impact of ferric carboxymaltose treatment for iron deficiency in patients stabilized following acute heart failure: a multinational study.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate clinical events and evaluate the financial implications of introducing ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) to treat iron deficiency (ID) at discharge in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure (AHF) with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <50% in the UK, Switzerland and Italy. METHODS: A decision analytic cost-offset model was developed to evaluate the costs associated with introducing FCM for all eligible patients in three countries compared to a world without FCM, over a five-year time horizon. Data from AFFIRM-AHF clinical trial were used to model clinical outco

Improving Postharvest Stabilization of Henna Leaves Using a Solar-Assisted Zigzag-Airflow Dryer: Drying Kinetics, Quality Attributes, and Economic Feasibility.

Henna (Lawsonia inermis L.) leaves are an important medicinal and cosmetic plant raw material, but their high moisture content makes them highly susceptible to quality deterioration during postharvest handling. This study evaluated a solar-assisted zigzag-airflow dryer (SAZA) for stabilizing henna leaves under arid-region conditions in Aswan, Egypt. Drying experiments were conducted using two airflow rates (0.09 and 0.14 m3/s), three loading layer thicknesses (2, 4, and 6 cm), and four fixed tray positions. The initial moisture content of henna leaves was 168.1% dry basis (d.b.), which decreas

Performance comparison and economics analysis of waste stabilization ponds and horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands treating domestic wastewater: a case study of the Juja sewage treatment works.

The performance, effluent quality, land area requirement, investment and operation costs of a full-scale waste stabilization pond (WSP) and a pilot scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF-CW) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) were investigated between November 2010 to January 2011. Both systems gave comparable medium to high levels of organic matter and suspended solids removal. However, the WSP showed a better removal for Total Phosphorus (TP) and Ammonium (NH4(+)-N). Based on the population equivalent calculations, the land area requirement

Adulthood functioning: the joint effects of parental alcoholism, gender and childhood socio-economic stress.

The popular literature has publicized the adjustment difficulties of adult children of an alcohol-dependent parent (ACOAs); however, empirical studies do not provide consistent support. We examined the impact of parental alcoholism, degree of childhood socio-economic stress and gender on three broad categories of adulthood functioning (psychopathology, socio-economic attainment and marital stability). These effects were investigated with a heterogeneous sample of 400 men and 226 women participating in studies at the University of Michigan Alcohol Research Center. Parental alcoholism and childh

Structural inequality shapes the daily rhythm of stationarity and mobility.

Human mobility exhibits rhythmic patterns that shape economic activity, social interactions, and access to essential services. Yet, while prior studies focus on spatial movement, the temporal structure of people's stationarity-the act of dwelling-remains underexplored. Here, we introduce the Stationarity Sinusoidal Stability (STASIS) model to quantify the daily pulse of physical presence. Using three parameters-range, phase angle, and baseline-we show that majority-Black census block groups (CBGs) have smaller daily stationarity ranges, later activity peaks, and lower average home-presence bas

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.
