PURPOSE: Behavioral economics is the study of human behavior in the context of irrationality, self-control and self-interest. It has been leveraged in a variety of ways in health care, including efforts to decrease smoking, encourage weight loss and promote medication adherence. Concepts from this field can be used to help urologists better understand and improve behavior-dependent clinical outcomes. Our objective in this scoping review was to assess the current state of behavioral economics in the urological literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of behavioral econo

Background Clinical decision support (CDS) systems can improve safety and facilitate evidence-based practice. However, clinical decisions are often affected by the cognitive biases and heuristics of clinicians, which is increasing the interest in behavioral and cognitive science approaches in the medical field. Objectives This review aimed to identify decision biases that lead clinicians to exhibit irrational behaviors or responses, and to show how behavioral economics can be applied to interventions in order to promote and reveal the contributions of CDS to improving health care quality.Method

Despite considerable progress, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. To address the considerable health and economic burden of tobacco use, the development of improved tobacco control and treatment interventions is critical. By combining elements of economics and psychology, behavioral economics provides a framework for novel solutions to treat smokers who have failed to quit with traditional smoking cessation interventions. The full range of behavioral economic principles, however, have not been widely utilized in the realm of tobacco control and treatme

PURPOSE: Mailed stool-based fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) can improve colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates. We aim to determine whether enhancing communications with evidence-based behavioral economics principles in mailed FIT kits further improves screening rates.
METHODS: This study focused predominantly on Medicare patients at average-risk for colon cancer who were not up-to-date on CRC screening. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two interventions: original communication (a series of standard communications, including a pre-mailing letter, FIT kit and letter, and reminders

This correspondence responds to Guss et al.'s study on using behavioral economics and TikTok for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education among youth. It expands the discourse to the Philippine context, where limited health literacy and rising HIV cases remain pressing concerns. With over 62 million TikTok users, the Philippines presents a critical opportunity to promote PrEP through gain-framed, authentic messaging. The commentary highlights the potential of social media as a tool for health education and calls for culturally relevant, youth-centered strategies to strengthen HIV preventi

Behavioral economics offers an innovative theoretical and practical framework for HIV/AIDS prevention by elucidating the irrational tendencies in individual decision-making. This review explores core behavioral economics concepts and their applications in HIV/AIDS prevention, including how salience bias, present bias, and loss aversion influence high-risk populations' behaviors. It also synthesizes empirical evidence on the effectiveness of nudge-based interventions in enhancing public health strategies, increasing HIV testing uptake, and improving treatment adherence.Additionally, the paper a

There are sex differences in the development of cocaine addiction. For example, the time that it takes for women from initial use to addiction is significantly shorter than for men. Thus, understanding why females are more vulnerable to cocaine addiction will provide insights into sex differences in the mechanisms underlying cocaine addiction. This study aimed to determine how cocaine demand intensity and elasticity might differ between sexes. In addition, the impact of estrous cycle and cocaine intake on demand was investigated. Male and female rats were trained to self-administer 0.125 mg of

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to antihypertensive medications is common. Mobile health (mHealth)-based behavioral economic interventions may improve adherence, but remain largely untested, especially in vulnerable populations.
OBJECTIVE: The study sought to test whether an mHealth incentive lottery would lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) and improve adherence.
METHODS: BETTER-BP (Behavioral Economics Trial To Enhance Regulation of Blood Pressure) was a randomized trial conducted in 3 safety-net clinics in New York City. Eligible participants were adults with hypertension prescribed at least 1 a

BACKGROUND: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries who work are often overpaid, with a median overpayment amount of over $9000. These overpayments occur when the Social Security Administration (SSA) pays benefits to beneficiaries not entitled to them because of work; beneficiaries are required to repay the debt to SSA. Work-related overpayments most often occur because beneficiaries work but do not follow SSDI program rules to report earnings and evidence suggests that SSDI beneficiaries are often unaware of reporting requirements.
OBJECTIVE: To assess written earnings repo

BACKGROUND: We previously observed that behavioral economic factors predict naturalistic heroin seeking behavior that correlates with opioid seeking in the experimental laboratory. The present study sought to replicate and extend these prior findings with regular cocaine users.
METHODS: Participants (N=83) completed a semi-structured interview to establish income-generating and cocaine-purchasing/use repertoire during the past month. Questions addressed sources/amounts of income and expenditures; price (money and time) per purchase; and frequency/amounts of cocaine purchased and consumed. Nat

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with chronic disease engage in sexual activity similar to their healthy peers, with generally low utilization of contraception. Adolescents with rheumatic diseases prescribed teratogenic medications may be at risk for unplanned pregnancy.
METHODS: Using structured quality improvement (QI) methods with behavior economic (BE) principles, a multidisciplinary team aimed to implement pregnancy prevention processes for females on high-risk medications. We leveraged BE-inspired interventions including improved accessibility of consents, utilizing distinctly colored consent fo

This article is concerned with causal mediation analysis with varying indirect and direct effects. We propose a varying coefficient mediation model, which can also be viewed as an extension of moderation analysis on a causal diagram. We develop a new estimation procedure for the direct and indirect effects based on B-splines. Under mild conditions, rates of convergence and asymptotic distributions of the resulting estimates are established. We further propose a F-type test for the direct effect. We conduct simulation study to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed methodology, a

Health-related behaviors such as tobacco, alcohol and other substance use, poor diet and physical inactivity, and risky sexual practices are important targets for research and intervention. Health-related behaviors are especially pertinent targets in the United States, which lags behind most other developed nations on common markers of population health. In this essay we examine the application of behavioral economics, a scientific discipline that represents the intersection of economics and psychology, to the study and promotion of health-related behavior change. More specifically, we review

Promoting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation to prevent new HIV infections among vulnerable populations continues to present significant challenges. Behavioral economics may provide a useful framework to help elucidate decision-making processes influencing valuation and use of PrEP. We developed two novel behavioral economic tasks assessing demand for PrEP pills and PrEP injection. Participants consisted of Black and Hispanic gay and bisexual men (GBM; N = 144), 18 to 34 years old, and recruited from Texas. Participants completed an online battery including PrEP demand tasks and questi

Behavioral economics is a field that optimizes decision-making by nudging people to a desired behavior. Interventions based on behavioral economics principles have been used to improve HIV outcomes. According to the CDC, culturally responsive methods have been used to adapt other types of HIV interventions. However, culturally responsive methods have not been used to adapt HIV-focused behavioral economics interventions. This study identifies patient-centered perspectives from both patients and providers regarding the culturally responsive development of behavioral economics-based interventions

Behavioral economics provides tools to understand and influence decision-making; however, its application to immunization equity remains limited. This analytic essay examines how behavioral frameworks such as EAST (Easy, Attractive, Social, Timely) and MINDSPACE (Messenger, Incentives, Norms, Defaults, Salience, Priming, Affect, Commitments, Ego) can inform pediatric immunization strategies. Behavioral insights can simplify decisions and motivate vaccine uptake through design elements such as defaults, reminders, and trusted messengers. However, these approaches operate within broader social a

The problem of suboptimal treatment adherence among patients with dermatologic or other diseases has not been adequately addressed in health care. Despite a wide range of efficacious therapies, nonadherence remains a primary driver of suboptimal clinical outcomes. Novel solutions to address this unmet need can be found in behavioral economics. By leveraging our understanding of human decision-making, we may better promote treatment adherence, thereby improving quality of life and decreasing economic burdens. Behavioral economics has been studied extensively in relation to topics such as health
