Verbal abuse is a problem that can confront all health care professionals in their day to day practice. Studies into abuse of professionals have emphasised the stressful effects of non-physical violence and have shown that it is often the most inexperienced members of various professions who are in the 'front line' of such attacks. The group of staff particularly at risk are student nurses (HSC 1987). This paper presents an evaluative study of a workshop devised to help student nurses to deal with verbal abuse (Wondrak 1989). Psychiatric nursing students were studied from two intakes into a tr

BACKGROUND: English is generally recognized as the international language of science and most research on evidence-based medicine is produced in English. While Bangla is the dominant language in Bangladesh, public midwifery degree programs use English as the medium of instruction (EMI). This enables faculty and student access to the latest evidence-based midwifery content, which is essential for provision of quality care later. Yet, it also poses a barrier, as limited English mastery among students and faculty limits both teaching and learning.
METHODS: This mixed-methods study investigates t

The global nursing shortage has caused competition and cooperation between countries desperate for registered nurses (RNs), and has led to an increase in migration and international recruitment of nurses. Some nursing diplomas or degrees earned in one country may not be transferable to another. As a result, there is growing interest in common standards and competencies of entry-level nurses to guide future registered nurse agreements between countries or multi-country licensure programs. An exploratory study was conducted to investigate how entry-level nurses are educated throughout the world.

OBJECTIVE: There are two integrated pre-service education programmes for nurses and midwives in India; a diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) and bachelor's in nursing (B.Sc. nursing). This study assessed and compared confidence of final-year students from these two programmes for selected midwifery skills from the list of midwifery competencies given by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).
DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the factors which influence student nurses' ability to urethrally catheterize children in their care. This aimed to inform current pre-registration clinical skill training and education.
METHODOLOGY: A mixed method study using focus groups and written questionnaires.
RESULTS: The students identified that being able to competently carry out urethral catheterisation was influenced by a lack of exposure to the clinical skill and a need for specific paediatric focused training. Evaluation of current catheterisation training highlighted that, even after tra

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a preventable, progressive, and non-infectious form of elephantiasis that can contribute to significant disability and economic burden when not treated early. Nurses play a critical role in early detection and response in rural Africa, but it is unclear if they receive adequate training on podoconiosis. We aimed to characterize podoconiosis instruction at all government accredited, post-secondary nursing institutions in three African countries.
METHODS: Data for this cross-sectional study was collected through a quantitative survey with several open-answer question

BACKGROUND: While many nursing programs in developed countries have implemented simulation-based education as a pedagogic method of teaching, implementation of simulation in developing countries like Tanzania is rare. Traditional methods of auditorium lectures are widely conducted in low-income nursing and midwifery education institutions. Such pedagogy provides students with theoretical knowledge yet with limited hands-on exposure for clinical skills, which might affect the professional integration of students and quality care delivery. This study explored perceptions of simulation-based educ

BACKGROUND: Exposure therapy is effective for phobic anxiety disorders (specific phobias, agoraphobia, social phobia) and panic disorder. Despite their high prevalence in the community, sufferers often get no treatment or if they do, it is usually after a long delay. This is largely due to the scarcity of healthcare professionals trained in exposure therapy, which is due, in part, to the high cost of training. Traditional teaching methods employed are labour intensive, being based mainly on role-play in small groups with feedback and coaching from experienced trainers. In an attempt to increas

In the early twentieth century, patients with infectious fevers represented a danger to the health of others including their nurses. This research describes the training New Zealand nurses received in fever nursing during the period 1903-1923, and considers how they applied hospital cross-infection principles in emergency tent fever camps in remote rural areas. It examines the reaction of nurses, hospital boards, and physicians to nurses who succumbed with their patients' fevers. It therefore reveals attitudes to nurses, prevailing ideas about responsibility for nurses' health, and elements in

BACKGROUND: Technical competency of graduate nurses is a much sought after commodity by nurse managers in this age of limited human nursing resources. Clinical coursework in nursing school should provide the graduate with the core skills necessary to function safely and competently in a variety of clinical sites.
METHODS: The research presented in this article examines the self-reported competency of 256 recent graduates of four different types of nursing programs in Israel, with respect to 53 technical skills. Information was collected via a structured questionnaire.
RESULTS: Graduates gene

Haiti has long had the largest proportion of people living in poverty and the highest mortality level of any country in the Americas. On January 12, 2010, the most powerful earthquake to hit Haiti in 200 years struck. Before the earthquake, half of all Haitians lacked any access to modern medical care services. Health care professionals in Haiti number around one-fourth of the world average and about one-tenth the ratio present in North America. The establishment of new primary care services in a country where half of the people had no access to modern health care prior to the earthquake requi

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal deaths in Tanzania, highlighting the critical need for effective training for student nurse-midwives in ordinary diploma programs. The study aimed to determine the changes in knowledge, skills, self-confidence, and satisfaction in preventing and managing postpartum hemorrhage among student nurse-midwives after the simulation-based education method is being used.
METHODS: A pre-post quasi-experimental study design without a control group was conducted to assess the impact of simulation-based education on student nurse-midwives' k

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a significant health burden associated with severe morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization costs and it poses challenges not only to individuals and their families but also to societal and governmental resources. In fact, nurses are indispensable in managing HF patients. The success of patient self-care preparation through education relies not only on the patient's abilities and attitude but also on the nurse's proficiency in these tasks and their knowledge and attitudes can significantly impact patient outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate nurses' knowledg

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a key role in stroke patient care in hospitals, yet little is known about their stroke-specific competencies in low-resource settings like Uganda. Assessment of stroke care competency among new and experienced nurses is important for identifying areas of improvement and development of professional programs to enhance the quality of care for patients. This study assessed self-reported stroke care competencies among nurses at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) to identify priority training needs.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study at MRRH, f
