BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) has been recognized as an innovative approach for the development of a collaborative, practice-ready health workforce, but is not used consistently in undergraduate health professional programs. We sought to explore the reflections of graduates on the IPE experiences they had during their undergraduate education and training. It was anticipated that having completed their pre-vocational education and spent up to two years working in a clinical environment, recent graduates would be well-placed to provide insights into the value of the IPE opportuni

BACKGROUND: Postgraduate fellowships for Doctor of Pharmacy students are diverse in their nature and expectations. Although fellowships have long been an avenue for advanced training, the lack of a centralized accreditation process means students are often navigating these opportunities on their own. The objective of this paper is to describe the structure and preliminary outcomes of the fellowship portion of a novel Fellowship and Residency Advising Program (FRAP) at an urban public university.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY: The fellowship portion of FRAP facilitates progression to postgraduate train

Not passing the North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) is the reality for a significant number of PharmD graduates. The average first time pass rates for the NAPLEX have experienced significant drops since 2017, hitting an all-time low (76.6 %) for the Class of 2023. While most candidates eventually pass the NAPLEX, a staggering 3228 PharmD graduates remain unlicensed due to unsuccessful licensure examinations from cycle years 2022 to 2024. Further decline is anticipated with impending changes to the structure of the NAPLEX in 2025. Unfortunately, unlicensed graduates are unabl

PURPOSE: Required competency areas, goals, and objectives for both postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residencies and postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) health-system pharmacy administration and leadership (HSPAL) residencies indicate the importance of research in the residency program by specifying it as a required part of the training process. Research is critical in the field of health-system pharmacy administration, which is built upon the principles of evaluation and assessment, ensuring that all activities implemented in an organization are evaluated through data collection and assessment to de

OBJECTIVES: To synthesize available literature and guidance on competency expectations in PharmD education and to propose a practical framework that distinguishes foundational competencies required of all graduates from competencies best developed through structured specialization pathways.
FINDINGS: Pharmacy practice is expanding across clinical, scientific, regulatory, public health, and technology-enabled roles, increasing pressure on PharmD curricula that are already densely packed. Reports and studies indicate that while foundational competencies are broadly endorsed, students' readiness

INTRODUCTION: Mental illness is prominent throughout higher education and even more so amongst healthcare professionals and those of Hispanic descent. The purpose of this study was to assess the state of mental health amongst a Doctor of Pharmacy cohort with a large Hispanic representation and compare their specific barriers to care and mental health care needs to other graduate health professions.
METHODS: This prospective, university-wide, survey of graduate health profession students investigated barriers to mental health resource utilization as well as key social determinants of mental he

With the increased focus and anticipated growth in specialty training and certification within the profession of pharmacy, it is important for the profession to step back and evaluate the manner in which its adopted education and certification systems interface. As a result of specialty practice development, significant growth is occurring in both postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs and individuals seeking certification by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. As the profession continues to evolve its specialty training and credentialing systems, it is important to consider t

OBJECTIVE: In US-based doctoral pharmacy education, students receive immunology instruction; however, advanced cellular and molecular concepts are often abstract and pose a challenge for many. Therefore, a first-year laboratory experience was designed for students to observe antibodies in action and connect this activity to patient care.
METHODS: Participants were enrolled in a first-year Microbiology and Immunology and an Integrated Sciences Lab course. One week after a didactic introduction, urine pregnancy tests were used in the lab to reinforce immunology concepts. Changes in participant

The US healthcare system is grappling with significant challenges, notably a shortage of primary care providers. Ambulatory care pharmacists are increasingly recognized as vital contributors to addressing these challenges. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards 2025 emphasizes preparing Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) graduates to be both "practice-ready" and "team-ready," supporting pharmacists' expanding role in addressing primary care shortages as members of interprofessional ambulatory care teams. The evolving healthcare landscape, local community needs, and directives from

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the impact of an Interprofessional Education (IPE) curriculum on pharmacy students and recent graduates.
METHODS: Due to the complexity of evaluating an IPE curriculum over a four-year pharmacy program, a mixed methods realist evaluation was conducted examining quantitative and qualitative data from 2021 and 2022 pharmacy graduate cohorts. Data included learning activity surveys and written reflections of placements completed by pharmacy students, and semi-structured interviews of recent PharmD graduates. Thematic analyses and descriptive statistics were employe

PURPOSE: The use of high-fidelity simulation training for preparing pharmacy residents for various high-stress and high-impact medical emergencies and the impact of this training on pharmacy residents' perception of preparedness are described.
SUMMARY: During the 2015-16 residency year at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, simulation training, in addition to lecture-based orientation training, was chosen as a method to reinforce skills and knowledge learned throughout the orientation, before residents began working on-call shifts. Three different simulation exercises were developed to

Several international studies have investigated academic decision-making in higher education, but there is limited research on students' choice to study pharmacy in the Canadian context. While there is some variation across jurisdictions, decisions to enroll in a particular degree program fall into several decision-making domains (e.g., personal, family, institutional, social, and economic). These findings have been theorized in various ways, for example, through social cognitive theory and social reproduction theory. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the personal,

OBJECTIVES: To propose a competency framework defining the AI-specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes Doctor of Pharmacy graduates should demonstrate, and to map these competencies to existing accreditation standards.
FINDINGS: While professional organizations and educators have developed valuable resources for using AI to teach, and existing ACPE Standards do not yet address AI directly. The proposed framework organizes competencies into three interrelated domains structured as a developmental progression: foundational AI literacy, critical use and appraisal of AI outputs, and responsible

This commentary explores the fragmented landscape of pharmacy education assessment frameworks and their impact on curricular design. Pharmacy education operates much like a restaurant kitchen, where multiple stakeholders influence what appears on the menu. Tools such as the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards 2025 (including the Curricular Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities and Appendix 1), American College of Clinical Pharmacy Pharmacotherapy Toolkit, and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination competencies al

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.2 million people are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the United States, and an estimated 32 000 new HIV infections are reported each year. While pharmacists and pharmacies play major roles in ending the HIV epidemic, harnessing their full potential will require substantial investment in training qualified pharmacy personnel who can provide HIV prevention and treatment services encompassing comprehensive, culturally sensitive care. The purpose of this white paper is to review critical challenges facing the professi
