Lessons learned: Shaping the evolution of veterinary specialty education.

In response to concerns regarding numerous complex issues facing the veterinary specialty profession, several organizations, including the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, have made a clarion call to the American Veterinary Medical Association to begin discussions surrounding the formation of an accrediting body for internships, residencies, and fellowships. A proposed name for such a body is the Accreditation Council on Graduate Veterinary Medical Education, in alignment with the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); the term "graduate" refers to specia

A Survey of Veterinary Student Perceptions on Integrating ChatGPT in Veterinary Education Through AI-Driven Exercises.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in education is rapidly gaining attention, particularly with tools like ChatGPT, which have the potential to transform learning experiences. However, the application of such tools in veterinary education remains under-explored. This study aimed to design an AI-driven exercise and investigate veterinary students' perceptions regarding the integration of ChatGPT into their education, specifically within the year 5 Equine Medicine and Surgery course at City University of Hong Kong. Twenty-two veterinary students participated in an AI-driven exercise, where they create

An upstream approach to veterinary workforce wellbeing: an evaluative review of an embedded wellbeing curriculum in veterinary education.

Veterinary professionals work in demanding environments shaped by individual, relational, organizational, and systemic pressures. Veterinary education can therefore serve as an upstream setting for developing both clinical competence and the capabilities needed for sustainable professional engagement and wellbeing. Competency-based veterinary education offers a structure for treating wellbeing as a professional capability that can be taught, practiced, assessed, and evaluated. This study reports an evaluative review of a longitudinal wellbeing curriculum embedded within the Doctor of Veterinar

Prevalence of mistreatment in veterinary medical education; a survey of 3rd year veterinary students at a single university.

BACKGROUND: Improving quality of life in veterinary medicine has emerged as an important topic. One factor which may influence quality of life in medical education is mistreatment (verbal abuse, power abuse, and physical abuse to establish and maintain a power hierarchy). Although it has been documented in medical education, its occurrence in veterinary education is not yet known. METHODS: Third year veterinary students were invited to participate in an anonymous and voluntary survey on mistreatment during the preclinical and clinical education. Students were asked if they witnessed and/or ex

Biosafety implications of cadaver preservation methods in veterinary anatomy education.

Cadaver dissection remains fundamental in veterinary medicine and anatomy education, providing an irreplaceable experiential learning opportunity. It fosters three-dimensional anatomical understanding, the development of manual dissection skills, and early insights into clinical practice. Despite growing availability of digital and virtual simulation tools, preserved animal cadavers remain essential and are still preferred for anatomy teaching, surgical training, and diagnostic instruction. No alternative method reproduces anatomical structures with the same fidelity as a real cadaver. Preserv

One Health-One Education: Medical and Veterinary Inter-Professional Training.

Physicians and veterinarians are increasingly expected to collaborate across disciplines; however, in most cases their education and training remain isolated within their respective professions. Medical and veterinary students are rarely provided with opportunities for inter-professional learning during their coursework and clinical training. One Health serves as an ideal framework for developing problem-focused curricula that promote inter-professional teamwork. One Health issues (e.g., zoonotic diseases, water pollution, toxic waste, impact of climate change, and food safety and security) no

Veterinary education in South Africa: the classes of 1936 & 1937.

Concise descriptions are given of the varied life histories of the students of the classes of 1936 and 1937. Consisting of 14 students, the class of 1936 was the largest of the pre-war classes of the Onderstepoort Faculty. Three of the 6 students in the 1937 class were actually repeating their final year, therefore the total number described below is 17 rather than 20. The detailed analysis of their careers reveals the presence of a remarkable degree of variation. Although all except Brookes, who apparently went directly into the newly established practice of Jack Boswell, initially joined the

Comparative evaluation of canine cadaver embalming methods for veterinary anatomy education.

Formalin-embalmed cadavers have been extensively used to teach anatomy. Although they ensure the preservation of anatomical structures without microbial contamination, they are considerably rigid and cannot be used to study the joint and muscle movements. Moreover, formalin irritates the eyes and airways and is carcinogenic on chronic exposure. To overcome the disadvantages of formalin-fixed cadavers, we investigated the usefulness of alternative embalming methods using saturated salt solution (SS) and Thiel's solution (TS). We compared the three solutions based on the following parameters: co

Undergraduate veterinary education at University College Dublin: a time of change.

The final-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (MVB) class of 2005 were the first cohort of students to complete the new curriculum at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD). The new curriculum is a fundamental departure from the traditional curriculum that had served the veterinary profession in Ireland over many years. The change was not a precipitate action but the outcome of a prolonged and thorough examination of the realities of veterinary medicine, its science and its art, in the first decade of a new millennium. Over recent decades, rapid and fundamental ch

The CBVE Model-Keystone and Stimulus for Educational Transformation in Veterinary Schools.

The AAVMC CBVE (American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges Competency-Based Veterinary Education) model was developed in three parts and published in 2018-2019, providing an evidence-based foundation for use in all aspects of veterinary curricula management from review to redesign and continuous curricular improvement. The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine (OSU CVM) recently undertook a comprehensive review and complete redesign of their curriculum, incorporating all the components of the CBVE model and, in the process, developed a continuous curricular improvement

If you build it, they will learn: A review of models in veterinary surgical education.

Surgical skills are learned through deliberate practice, and veterinary educators are increasingly turning to models for teaching and assessing surgical skills. This review article sought to compile and review the literature specific to veterinary surgical skills models, and to discuss the themes of fidelity, educational outcomes, and validity evidence. Several literature searches using broad terms such as "veterinary surgery model," "veterinary surgical model," and "veterinary surgical simulator" were performed using PubMed, CAB abstracts, and Google scholar. All articles describing a model c

Setting Up and Running Online Communities of Practice (CoPs) for Veterinary Educators.

Communities of practice (CoPs) are social systems consisting of individuals who come together to share knowledge and solve problems around a common interest. For educators, membership in a CoP can facilitate access to expertise and professional development activities and generate new collaborations. This teaching tip focuses on online CoPs and provides tips for setting up and running such communities. The initial planning phase involves establishing the purpose of the CoP, recruiting an administrative team, designing the structure of the online environment, and choosing a platform. Once the on

What's the evidence? A review of current instruction and assessment in veterinary surgical education.

Veterinary surgical education is improved by studying the relevant literature. The aim of this literature review was to report the theory and methods used to provide surgical education to veterinary students; to discuss the training most likely to create a competent general practitioner; and to review assessment methods for simulated and live surgeries. The literature reviewed demonstrates that new graduates are expected to perform small animal sterilization, dental extraction, onychectomy, abscess treatment, aural hematoma repair, and mass removal with little or no supervision. Students requi

International cooperation in veterinary public health curricula using web-based distance interactive education.

The expanding field of Veterinary Public Health places new demands on the knowledge and skills of veterinarians. Veterinary curricula must therefore adapt to this new profile. Through the introduction of case studies dealing with up-to-date issues, students are being trained to solve (real-life) problems and come up with realistic solutions. At the Department of Public Health and Food Safety of the Veterinary Faculty at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, positive experiences have resulted from the new opportunities offered by the use of information and communication technology (ICT)

Variability and Misalignment in Pre-Clinical Veterinary Microbiology Education: Implications for Competency-Based Training.

Microbiology is fundamental to veterinary medicine, providing the scientific basis for infectious disease diagnosis, antimicrobial stewardship, vaccination, bio-security, zoonotic disease management, and public health. Despite its importance, little information exists regarding how pre-clinical veterinary microbiology is taught or how curricular content aligns with competency-based veterinary education (CBVE). A survey conducted in collaboration with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) examined curricular structure, faculty composition, instructional methods, and co

An Exploratory Study of the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic Disruptions on Veterinary Medical Education.

The COVID-19 outbreak forced educators worldwide to transition to remote teaching, which caught most of the instructors and students off-guard. Instructors had to quickly adapt and find effective substitute teaching methods during this unprecedented period, while students had to maintain motivation and engagement in the learning process. As with all educational levels and disciplines, teaching and assessment in veterinary medicine were forced to change during this adjustment period. The biggest concern regarding educational experiences was potential learning loss caused by the disruption. This
