Classroom settings for visually impaired schoolchildren: A scoping review.

Visually impaired schoolchildren require classrooms tailored to their visual abilities and needs, as outlined in existing literature detailing optimal modifications, recommendations, and guidelines. The study aims to review existing literature on classroom modifications for visually impaired schoolchildren, outlining recommendations for creating ideal classrooms within mainstream physical settings. After initial screening, 712 publications (698 from databases and registers, and 14 from other methods) were identified for detailed review, of which 17 were ultimately eligible for inclusion. Throu

Interveners for Children Who Are Deafblind: The Parents' Perspective.

Students with a visual impairment and a concurring hearing impairment are considered deafblind under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004. Deafblindness is not limited to students who are totally blind and profoundly deaf; rather, it ensures that when students have a visual impairment as well as a hearing impairment that impacts their learning, appropriate services are in place for them to receive an appropriate education in the school setting. In the United States, the deafblind intervener model has been implemented in some states, whereby the intervener acts as a co

An adult learning perspective on disability and microfinance: The case of Katureebe.

BACKGROUND: Despite Uganda's progress in promoting affirmative action for persons with disabilities and its strategy of using microfinance to fight poverty, access to microfinance services by persons with disabilities is still problematic due to barriers, characterised by discrepancies between policies and practices. Regarding education, the affirmative action in favour of learners with disabilities has not translated into actual learning opportunities due to personal and environmental barriers. OBJECTIVES: The study on which this article is based investigated the non-formal and informal adul

Empowering visually impaired students through innovative tools and accessible waste sorting education at the national level.

Waste separation is a critical strategy to address the intensifying global waste crisis. However, inclusive teaching strategies for visually impaired students remain limited. This study addresses this pressing gap by implementing an innovative intervention rooted in experiential learning principles. This approach integrates sound-equipped bins and waste sorting activity guides tailored to empower visually impaired students to independently and effectively separate waste. The research study employed a mixed-methods design encompassing three key phases: (1) training teachers to proficiently use

On being a pathologist: a pathway to pathology practice; the added value of supplemental vocational training and mentoring in college and medical school.

Traditionally, vocational training and liberal arts (and premedical) curricula have been separate education tracks. This personal profile describes a program that evolved from the partial fusion of vocational training and a premedical education track. My personal health issue, visual impairment, which presumably resulted as a complication of congenital toxoplasmosis, hampered my ability to read in grammar school and necessitated my placement in remedial reading classes until eighth grade. My father created an independent home-based vocational training program that ran in parallel to my traditi

A survey of graph-based assistive technologies for visually impaired students in Thailand.

Graphs and other visual representations are essential tools in mathematics and science education. However, visually impaired (VI) students in Thailand often face significant barriers to accessing these materials. This study, conducted in four schools for the blind in Thailand, examined the availability and usability of graph tools. Using a combination of surveys and in-depth interviews with 60 participants (40 VI students and 20 teachers), we identified various challenges related to perceptibility (unclear axes and grid lines, need to reset/replot), affordability (limited budgets, dependence o

Understanding the Relationship Between Teacher Behavior and Motivation in Students with Acquired Deafblindness.

Because little is known about teacher-student relationships that involve students with acquired deafblindness, the authors performed a multiple case study with a multiple-method design to investigate the relationship between need-supportive teaching behaviors and student engagement. Using self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), they analyzed video observations of interactions. It was found that teachers' provision of structure, autonomy support, and involvement often cooccurs with higher levels of student engagement. Moreover, varying degrees of need support over time seem to result in

PURPOSE: Students with visual impairments face significant educational barriers due to the limited availability of Braille-trained educators and accessible instructional materials. This study presents Braille AI, a native Android application designed to support bidirectional translation between Spanish text and Braille. Materials and methods: The application integrates two artificial intelligence models: YOLOv8 for Braille symbol detection and a convolutional neural network implemented with TensorFlow Lite for character classification. Causes of Childhood Vision Impairment in the School for the Blind in Eritrea.

SIGNIFICANCE: Our study provides the much-needed evidence on causes of childhood blindness in Eritrea. This will assist authorities to plan appropriate strategies and implement preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services to address these causes of vision loss in children in this resource-limited country. PURPOSE: This study aims to identify the causes of severe vision impairment and blindness in children attending the only school for the blind in Eritrea. METHODS: All children enrolled in the school were examined, and the World Health Organization form for the examination of visually i

Teachers' experiences and perceptions of pre-braille skills, unified English braille, and braille (math, techs, usage, inclusivity) in Ethiopian boarding schools for the blind.

OBJECTIVES: This is the first nationwide study focusing exclusively on blind boarding schools in Ethiopia. The study examined the experiences and perceptions of Ethiopian blind boarding school teachers regarding pre-braille skills, unified English braille, and braille (mathematics, technology, usage, and inclusivity). METHODS: Seven blind boarding schools and their 110 teachers (98.21%) were involved using the census sampling technique. Researchers collected data through questionnaires and analysed it using Bayesian and ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS: Teachers were more likely to favou

Increasing Self-Regulation and Classroom Participation of a Child Who Is Deafblind.

Self-regulation has been identified as essential to school success. However, for a variety of reasons, its development may be compromised in children and youth who are deafblind. A single-case multiple-baseline study of a child who was deafblind examined the effects of three groups of evidence-based interventions on variables thought to be associated with self-regulation. The dependent variables were (a) frequency and duration of behaviors thought to indicate dysregulation, (b) active participation in school activities, and (c) time from onset of behaviors indicating dysregulation until achiev

Implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in public and private schools in three districts of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The study was grounded in the recent developments of implementing the United Nations Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in schools in Uganda, leading to a renewed interest in the questionings about inclusive education. OBJECTIVES: The inclusive approach was evaluated in terms of: (1) how public or private schools in Uganda understand inclusive education; (2) how schools implement inclusive education under the influence of the UN Convention; and (3) what determines the course of action and school routine of private and state schools. METHODS: This explor

Labor market entry prospects of people with visual impairments: evidence from administrative register data in the Netherlands.

The UN's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities includes a right to equal work opportunities. People with visual impairments (VI) are targeted by this convention and experience low employment rates. The initial transition from education to labor is a predictor for later labor market participation. Exploiting administrative register data, we identified a graduated subpopulation with VI and matched them to a control group. This paper evaluates (1) group differences in various socio-economic outcomes following graduation, and (2) following initial employment. Following graduation t

Teaching the reading of connected text through sight-word instruction to students with moderate intellectual disabilities.

Sight-word instruction is the most common method of reading instruction for students with Moderate Intellectual Disabilities reported in the research literature. The purpose of this study was to go beyond instruction of single word units to instruction of multiple-word phrases. This study demonstrated the instruction of reading and comprehending individual words and connected text through the use of simultaneous prompting. Instruction progressed through a series of phases which systematically introduced various parts of speech and combinations of parts of speech. Following acquisition, student
