Pathology Following Stillbirth: Differences by Insurance Status and Educational Attainment.

BACKGROUND: One in 175 births in the United States is a stillbirth-approximately 21,000 births annually. Pathology (fetal autopsy and placental histopathology) is recommended to help determine the aetiology of a stillbirth. However, socioeconomic factors, such as education level and insurance status, may influence whether stillbirth pathology is pursued. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated associations between socioeconomic factors and the use of pathology following stillbirth. METHODS: We analysed linked fetal death certificates and maternal hospitalisation discharge records from stillbirths occurring

Educational status, testosterone replacement, and intelligence outcomes in Klinefelter syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Most male hypergonadotropic hypogonadism associated with infertility can be attributed to a single genetic condition such as Klinefelter syndrome (KS). This disease's wide phenotypic variability is frequently associated with mosaic 47,XXY lineages and testosterone replacement. Early diagnosis and treatment have been associated with better cognitive and intellectual outcomes, but the scope of this influence requires further investigation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the intelligence profile of a cohort of patients with KS, considering the influence of educational lev

[Current status of Urological Education in Spain.].

INTRODUCTION: Urology is a medicalsurgical specialty that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical conditions of the urinary tract and retroperitoneum in both sexes and of the male genital tract without age limit. The traditional method of training is based on the imitation of the skills and behaviors of the tutors, creating variability in the training between different centers and giving a passive role to resident internal physicians (MIR). LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK: The 2006 BOE establishes the specific formative content in its theoretical, practical and scientific

Rising educational gradients in mortality among U.S. whites: What are the roles of marital status and educational homogamy?

The educational gradient in U.S. mortality has been rising among non-Hispanic whites. A common intuition sees the growing educational divide in marital status and increases in educational homogamy as potential explanations. To empirically assess this possibility, we analyze mortality from 1986 to 2015 using the National Health Interview Survey Linked Mortality Files (562,584 persons; 204,756 deaths). At the individual level, being unmarried and spouse's lower educational attainment are associated with higher mortality. Counterfactual analyses, however, reveal that the growing educational divid

Including educational status may improve cardiovascular risk calculations such as SCORE2.

BACKGROUND: The association between education and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) has been well described for decades. Nevertheless, most cardiovascular risk models, including SCORE2, still do not take educational status into account even if this factor is easily assessed and costs nothing to acquire. Using carotid plaques as a proxy for ASCVD, we analysed educational status as associated with carotid plaque development, to determine if the relationship remains, how it relates to traditional risk factors and, how it impacts the European cardiovascular risk model, SCORE2. Association between educational status and dual-task performance in young adults.

The influence of educational status on perceptual-motor performance has not been investigated. The single- and dual-task performances of 15 Low educated adults (9 men, 6 women; M age=24.1 yr.; 6-9 yr. of education) and 15 Higher educated adults (8 men, 7 women; M age=24.7 yr.; 10-13 yr. of education) were compared. The perceptual task consisted of verbally classifying two figures (equal or different). The motor task consisted of alternating steps from the floor to a stool. Tasks were assessed individually and simultaneously. Two analyses of variance (2 groups×4 blocks) compared the errors and

The health and educational status of adolescents with congenital rubella syndrome.

As part of a longitudinal study of children with congenital rubella syndrome, 53 adolescents between 16 and 18 years of age were surveyed to determine their health and educational status. The findings were compared with those at the 18-months evaluation. At 16 to 18 years neurosensory impairments, cerebral dysfunction and organic behaviour syndromes were predominant, but the majority of children had multiple handicaps. A higher proportion had hearing loss. Although all the hearing-impaired children were begun in oral-based educational programs, 90 per cent of those with severe to profound hear

Mainstreaming and postsecondary educational and employment status of a rubella cohort.

The postsecondary education and work status of 46 rubella deaf young adults was described and evaluated as an outcome of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, preschool attendance, early parent involvement, and degree of prior mainstreaming. With regard to postsecondary education attendance, 24 had two or more years, 11 had one year or less, and 11 had none. At time of interview, 19 were still attending school, 22 were working and five were neither working nor attending an educational program. Ethnic minority young adults were underrepresented in the group with two or more years of postsecondary ed

Maternal educational status at birth, maternal educational advancement, and neurocognitive outcomes at age 10 years among children born extremely preterm.

BackgroundTo determine if a key marker of socioeconomic status, maternal education, is associated with later neurocognitive and academic outcomes among children born extremely preterm (EP).MethodEight hundred and seventy-three children born at 23 to 27 weeks of gestation were assessed for cognitive and academic ability at age 10 years. With adjustments for gestational age (GA) and potential confounders, outcomes of children whose mothers had fewer years of education at the time of delivery and children whose mother advanced in education between birth and 10 years were examined.ResultsChildren

Cigarette smoking behavior is strongly related to educational status: the CARDIA study.

The prevalence and correlates of cigarette smoking were examined in 5,116 men and women ages 18-30 years including both blacks and whites of varied educational levels. Prevalence of smoking was approximately 30% in each race by gender subgroup after adjusting for age and education. The prevalence decreased with increasing education, from 54% among participants with less than a high school education to 12% among those with graduate degrees (P less than 0.001). Cessation rates followed a similar pattern, with former smokers twice as common among those with more education. Differences in smoking

Maternal Education and Immunization Status Among Children in Kenya.

Child morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases continues to be a major threat and public health concern worldwide. Although global vaccination coverage reached 90 % for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) across 129 countries, Kenya and other sub-Saharan countries continue to experience under-vaccination. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between maternal education and child immunization (12-23 months) in Kenya. This study used retrospective cross-sectional data from the 2008-2009 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey for women aged 15-49, who had children a

Education, socioeconomic status and risk of cancer of the colon and rectum.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic correlates of cancer of the large bowel differ in various countries and calendar periods and may differ for the colon and rectum. Thus, the relationship between education and social class and risk of cancers of the colon and rectum was considered. METHODS: Combination of two hospital-based case-control studies conducted in six Italian centres between 1985 and 1996. Cases were 3533 patients aged < 79, with histologically confirmed cancer of the colon (n = 2180) or rectum (n = 1353), and controls were 7062 patients admitted to hospital for a wide spectrum of acute, non

Evaluating the Association Between Educational Status and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Presentations and Severity.

Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a painful prevalent orthopedic hand condition causing pain and paresthesia, is typically diagnosed clinically. Initial management involves analgesia trials, steroid injections, and night splints, with surgery as an option for failed conservative treatment. While prior research has explored the relationship between patients' educational status and various orthopedic conditions, no studies have investigated its association with clinical presentation and symptom severity in CTS. Therefore, our study aims to investigate this important link. Methods: Our

The association between educational status and colorectal neoplasia: results from a screening cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Educational status is used as a proxy for socioeconomic status. While lower levels of education are generally associated with poorer health, the data on the relationship between educational status and colorectal neoplasia is heterogenous. The aim of our study was to examine this relationship and to adjust the association between educational status and colorectal neoplasia for other health parameters. METHODS: We included 5977 participants undergoing a screening colonoscopy in Austria. We split the cohort into patients with lower (n = 2156), medium (n = 2933), and higher (n = 459

The Influence of Intensive Nutritional Education on the Iron Status in Infants.

Iron is an essential nutrient for a child's proper development at every growth stage. It is crucial for the production of red blood and muscle cells, DNA replication, and the development of the brain, nervous and immune systems. Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency in children worldwide. Despite widespread access to nutritional information for children, parents continue to make many feeding mistakes. This study aimed to assess whether any nutritional intervention would affect the iron status in children. The parents of 203 children were randomly assigned to one of two gr

Functional status, education, and the diagnosis of dementia in the Shanghai survey.

We examined the relationship of culturally adapted Chinese versions of the Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMS) and several functional measures to the effect of education on the clinical diagnosis of dementia in 554 subjects (55 to 95 years; median, 74) who had undergone intensive evaluation during the Shanghai survey of dementia. Low education was associated with increased prevalence of clinically diagnosed dementia. The standardized history and one functional scale (Pfeffer Outpatient Disability Scale [POD]) clustered closely with clinical diagnosis on factor analysis, whereas the CMMS, Inst

Relationship of executive function and educational status with functional balance in older adults.

BACKGROUND: The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) is frequently used to assess functional balance in older adults. The relationship of executive function and level of education with the BBS performance has not been described. The aim of this study was to determine whether (1) the performance on a task requiring executive function (part B of the Trail Making Test, TMT-B) influences results of motor and cognitive tests and (2) the number of years of formal education could be related to performance on BBS in older adults. We also explored whether there would be differences, based on performance on TMT-B (

Educational status and school-related abilities of very low birth weight premature children.

Eighty-eight premature children with birth weights less than or equal to 1500 g were evaluated at ages between 7 and 8 years old to determine their academic status in comparison with those of a matched full-term group. Results showed that a much higher proportion of the premature children required special educational interventions (48%) than either the full-term children (15%) or the New York State public elementary school population (10%). More than half of the premature children who received educational intervention were neurologically impaired or had below normal intelligence. The entire gr
