The Astonishing Behavior of Electric Eels.

The remarkable physiology of the electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) made it one of the first model species in science. It was pivotal for understanding animal electricity in the 1700s, was investigated by Humboldt and Faraday in the 1800s, was leveraged to isolate the acetylcholine receptor in the 20th century, and has inspired the design of new power sources and provided insights to electric organ evolution in the 21st century. And yet few studies have investigated the electric eel's behavior. This review focuses on a series of recently discovered behaviors that evolved alongside the eel

Effects of eel neuropeptide Y on ion transport across the seawater eel intestine.

A neuropeptide Y (eNPY) was isolated from the intestinal extract of eels. This peptide enhanced significantly the serosa-negative transepithelial potential difference (PD) and short-circuit current (Isc) across the intestine of the seawater eel after pretreatment with isobutylmethylxanthine, serotonin and methacholine. The effects of eNPY on the Isc were concentration-dependent with a threshold concentration of 3 x 10(-9) M and a maximal effect at 3 x 10(-7) M. Similar concentration-response curve was obtained by porcine peptide YY (pPYY). Since 9 amino acid residues are replaced in the pPYY,

Cryo-EELS elemental mapping of organic-solvent systems.

Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) is a powerful method that enables the observation of nanomaterials while preserving the specimen in a vitrified state, and minimizing damage caused by the electron-beam irradiation. Although cryo-TEM has been widely applied to aqueous specimens, its application to organic solvent systems remains limited. Because the physicochemical properties of organic solvents differ markedly from those of water, efficient vitrification methods have not yet been well established to date. More critically, organic solvents are highly susceptible to electron

GASTRIC POLYPOID HYPERPLASIA IN MORAY EELS (MURAENIDAE): EIGHT CASES.

Gastric and intestinal mucosal hyperplasia and polyps are identified as a cause of morbidity and mortality in moray eels. This report describes the clinical presentations, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic interventions in eight moray eels diagnosed with gastric polypoid hyperplasia. All described cases were humanely euthanized or found deceased, and multifocal adenomatous hyperplasia and polyps extending from the gastric mucosal epithelium were identified in all cases. The moray eels diagnosed with adenomatous hyperplasia and polyps often exhibited anorexia, regurgitation, and occasional

Spontaneous peripheral neuritis in two electric eels (Electrophorus electricus).

This study represents cases with spontaneous neuritis of peripheral nerves in electric eels. Two electric eels were presented with abnormal swimming behavior and loss of appetite. Electric eels had extensive histopathologic lesions in the splenic and cardiac nerves. The lesions were characterized by swelling of neuronal cells, central chromatolysis and marked inflammatory cell infiltration consisting mainly of lymphocytes around the affected nerves. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of spontaneous neuritis of peripheral nerves in electric eels.

Evolution of the locomotory system in eels (Teleostei: Elopomorpha).

BACKGROUND: Living anguilliform eels represent a distinct clade of elongated teleostean fishes inhabiting a wide range of habitats. Locomotion of these fishes is highly influenced by the elongated body shape, the anatomy of the vertebral column, and the corresponding soft tissues represented by the musculotendinous system. Up to now, the evolution of axial elongation in eels has been inferred from living taxa only, whereas the reconstruction of evolutionary patterns and functional ecology in extinct eels still is scarce. Rare but excellently preserved fossil eels from the Late Cretaceous and C

Biting disrupts integration to spur skull evolution in eels.

The demand that anatomical structures work together to perform biological functions is thought to impose strong limits on morphological evolution. Breakthroughs in diversification can occur, however, when functional integration among structures is relaxed. Although such transitions are expected to generate variation in morphological diversification across the tree of life, empirical tests of this hypothesis are rare. Here we show that transitions between suction-based and biting modes of prey capture, which require different degrees of coordination among skull components, are associated with s

Assessing downstream passage of European silver eel at a tidal pumping station: acceleration as a proxy for eel activity.

BACKGROUND: To complete their lifecycle, diadromous fish often need to pass anthropogenic barriers in regulated rivers and estuaries (e.g., pumping stations, weirs, hydropower facilities). The safe and timely passage of the endangered catadromous European eel (Anguilla anguilla), through pumping stations is a major concern and European legislation stipulates that safe downstream passage must be provided at hazardous intakes. To implement effective mitigation measures, specific knowledge on eel passage behaviour at barriers is needed. METHODS: We used acoustic telemetry with acceleration senso

A mechanistic model for studying the initiation of anguillid vitellogenesis by comparing the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and the shortfinned eel (A. australis).

An inverse relation exists between the maturation stage at the start of the oceanic reproductive migration and the migration distance to the spawning grounds for the various eel species. The European eel Anguilla anguilla migrates up to 5-6000 km and leaves in a previtellogenic state. The shortfinned eel A. australis migrates 2-4000 km and leaves in an early vitellogenic state. In this study, we compared the early pubertal events in European silver eels with those in silver shortfinned eels to gain insights into the initiation of vitellogenesis. Immediately after being caught, yellow and silve

Raptorial jaws in the throat help moray eels swallow large prey.

Most bony fishes rely on suction mechanisms to capture and transport prey. Once captured, prey are carried by water movement inside the oral cavity to a second set of jaws in the throat, the pharyngeal jaws, which manipulate the prey and assist in swallowing. Moray eels display much less effective suction-feeding abilities. Given this reduction in a feeding mechanism that is widespread and highly conserved in aquatic vertebrates, it is not known how moray eels swallow large fish and cephalopods. Here we show that the moray eel (Muraena retifera) overcomes reduced suction capacity by launching

Changes of CB1 Receptor Expression in Tissues of Cocaine-Exposed Eels.

Previous studies performed on the European eel Anguilla anguilla showed changes in the morphology and physiology of several tissues after exposure to environmental cocaine concentrations. To better understand the model through which cocaine produced its effects on these tissues, we investigated whether there were alterations in the expression of cannabinoid CB1 receptor (CB1R). Indeed, the endocannabinoid system, and CB1R, regulate neurotransmission, neurodevelopment, embryonic development, reproduction, and the activity of the gastrointestinal system. CB1R has been detected in nervous and per

Relativistic EELS scattering cross-sections for microanalysis based on Dirac solutions.

The rich information of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) comes from the complex inelastic scattering process whereby fast electrons transfer energy and momentum to atoms, exciting bound electrons from their ground states to higher unoccupied states. To quantify EELS, the common practice is to compare the cross-sections integrated within an energy window or fit the observed spectrum with theoretical differential cross-sections calculated from a generalized oscillator strength (GOS) database with experimental parameters. The previous Hartree-Fock-based and DFT-based GOS are calculated fr

Localization of diversified relaxin gene transcripts in the brain of eels.

Relaxin 3 (RLN3) is a newly-discovered member of the insulin superfamily. We isolated three RLN3-like cDNAs from the brain of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica). The deduced amino acid sequences of the RLN3-like cDNAs contained the two-chain structure common to relaxin including a RXXXRXXI/V motif in the B-chain. Phylogenetic analysis assigned the two prepropeptides into teleost/mammalian RLN3 group, which are a pair of duplicates generated by the teleost-specific third-round whole genome duplication, and the other one into teleost RLN group. Therefore, they have been named eel rln3a, rln3b

Cucullanus oceaniensis sp. n. (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) from Pacific eels (Anguilla spp.).

A new species of parasitic nematode, Cucullanus oceaniensis sp. n., is described from the intestine of the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata (type host) from Futuna Island (Wallis and Futuna Islands, Polynesia) and from A. marmorata and Anguilla sp. (cf. obscura) from Fiji Islands (Melanesia, South Pacific). The main distinguishing characteristics are the length of spicules (668-1,020 microm), situation of deirids (slightly anterior to the oesophago-intestinal junction) and the excretory pore (some distance posterior to the end of oesophagus), and the arrangement of caudal papillae in the m

Ultrasonography to assist with timing of spawning in European eel.

Ovulation in the European eel can be induced by injection of DHP (17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one). The timing of injection is based on the developmental stage of the oocytes. The oocyte stage is determined by invasive biopsy or through external indicators of the oocyte hydration response: body weight index (BWI) and body girth index (BGI). However, in European eel, BWI and BGI are inaccurate indicators because the individual hydration response is highly variable. The aim of this study was to identify indicators of oocyte maturation non-invasively by applying ultrasonography. Ultrasound para
