Efferent pathways modulate hyperactivity in inferior colliculus.

Animal models have demonstrated that mild hearing loss caused by acoustic trauma results in spontaneous hyperactivity in the central auditory pathways. This hyperactivity has been hypothesized to be involved in the generation of tinnitus, a phantom auditory sensation. We have recently shown that such hyperactivity, recorded in the inferior colliculus, is still dependent on cochlear neural output for some time after recovery (up to 6 weeks). We have now studied the capacity of an intrinsic efferent system, i.e., the olivocochlear system, to alter hyperactivity. This system is known to modulate

Clinical relevance of medial efferent auditory pathways.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions have been shown to be suppressed by sounds applied in the contralateral ear and this effect can be largely explained by the involvement of medial olivocochlear efferent fibers. Thus, EOAE recording during contralateral stimulation provides a non-invasive means of investigating auditory efferent system functioning in humans. The question remains, however, as to whether this test provides a tool, which could be useful in a variety of clinical applications. This review describes current clinical applications for this test, showing that it may prove useful for improvin

Efferent pathways of the mouse lateral habenula.

The lateral habenula (LHb) is part of the habenula complex of the dorsal thalamus. Recent studies of the LHb have focused on its projections to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg), which contain γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons that mediate reward prediction error via inhibition of dopaminergic activity. However, older studies in the rat have also identified LHb outputs to the lateral and posterior hypothalamus, median raphe, dorsal raphe, and dorsal tegmentum. Although these studies have shown that the medial and lateral divisions of the LHb have

Sympathetic efferent pathways projecting to the vas deferens.

The abdominal and pelvic sympathetic nervous system controlling the vas deferens has elaborate mechanisms to preserve its function against various injuries. The main sympathetic signals to the vas deferens proceed the common pathway in mammalians, which consists of the lumbar splanchnic nerve, caudal mesenteric plexus, hypogastric nerve, pelvic plexus and its branches. On the way of this common pathway, some signals cross to the other side of the body at the level of the caudal mesenteric plexus and/or the pelvic plexus. The preganglionic axons passing through the hypogastric nerve very likely

Orexin neurons suppress narcolepsy via 2 distinct efferent pathways.

The loss of orexin neurons in humans is associated with the sleep disorder narcolepsy, which is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. Mice lacking orexin peptides, orexin neurons, or orexin receptors recapitulate human narcolepsy phenotypes, further highlighting a critical role for orexin signaling in the maintenance of wakefulness. Despite the known role of orexin neurons in narcolepsy, the precise neural mechanisms downstream of these neurons remain unknown. We found that targeted restoration of orexin receptor expression in the dorsal raphe (DR) and in the locus coeru

Magnetic resonance imaging of the fetal efferent lacrimal pathways.

OBJECTIVE: To study the prenatal development of the efferent lacrimal pathways with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with special reference to the pathogenesis of congenital dacryocystoceles (CDCCs). METHODS: A total of 751 MRI studies of singleton fetuses [19-40 gestational weeks (GW)] were retrospectively evaluated. Visibility of the efferent lacrimal pathways was assessed on high-resolution T2-weighted sequences and the maximum transverse lacrimal sac diameter was recorded. RESULTS: Fluid-filled lacrimal sacs/nasolacrimal ducts could be demonstrated in 31.7% of fetuses, either unilateral

Metabolic activation of efferent pathways from the rat area postrema.

We used the quantitative [14C]deoxyglucose method and autoradiography to evaluate metabolic activity in 47 individual cerebral structures or subregions that are part of neural pathways emanating from the brain stem circumventricular organ, area postrema. Electrical stimulation of the dorsocentral area postrema in halothane-ventilated rats produced hypotension and increased glucose metabolism by several structures within the ascending trajectories of efferent neural projections from the nucleus. Structures in the caudal medulla oblongata, including three subnuclei of the nucleus of the solitary

Sympathetic efferent pathways projecting to the vagina in the dog.

The level of the thoracolumbar sympathetic outflow projecting to the vagina and the laterality of the signals passing through the splanchnic nerves to the vagina have not been well understood. This study was undertaken to explore the sympathetic innervation of the canine vagina by measuring intraluminal pressure of the vagina and contraction of the vaginal wall by electrical stimulation of each of the thoracolumbar splanchnic nerves with or without transection of unilateral hypogastric nerve (HGN). The 2nd-4th lumbar splanchnic nerve (LSN) stimulation elicited elevation of intraluminal pressur

Efferent pathways in the reflex control of gastric emptying in rats.

Previous studies have established that acid, hypertonic, or protein-rich liquid test meals delay gastric emptying by reflex pathways involving the extrinsic innervation of the gut. To characterize the efferent pathways involved in these reflexes, we have studied the emptying of liquid test meals in control rats and in rats after celiac ganglionectomy, pyloroplasty, and treatment with guanethidine or 6-hydroxydopamine, and in rats with circulating vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) antibodies. The results suggest that the action of hypertonic solutions on gastric emptying requires an intac

Frequency of an accessory popliteal efferent lymphatic pathway in dogs.

Staging and therapeutic planning for dogs with malignant disease in the popliteal lymph node are based on the expected patterns of lymphatic drainage from the lymph node. The medial iliac lymph nodes are known to receive efferent lymph from the popliteal lymph node; however, an accessory popliteal efferent pathway with direct connection to the sacral lymph nodes has also been less frequently reported. The primary objective of this prospective, anatomic study was to describe the frequency of various patterns of lymphatic drainage of the popliteal lymph node. With informed client consent, 50 adu

Functional asymmetries of crossed and uncrossed medial olivocochlear efferent pathways in humans.

In a previous study, a peripheral auditory asymmetry in right-handers was found. The activity of the uncrossed medial olivocochlear efferent pathway has been shown to be more effective in the right than in the left ear. Our aim was to compare right and left medial olivocochlear inhibition during contralateral, ipsilateral and binaural ear stimulation with a broad band noise, in order to better localize this asymmetry. Uncrossed pathway asymmetry was confirmed and the crossed pathway showed a reverse asymmetry: a left ear advantage. These results are in accordance with the assumption that the m

[Latency, threshold and frequency selectivity of the crossed medial cochlear efferent pathways].

The efferent innervation of guinea pig cochleas was sectioned medially, at the level of the floor of the fourth ventricle, to study the effects of the crossed part of the medial efferent pathway on the compound action potential (CAP) masking phenomenon. Sectioning reduced CAP masking for a masker level varying with the frequency of the masker and the time elapsed between the masker onset and the probe onset. Functional properties of the crossed part of the medial efferent tracts: latency, thresholds and frequency selectivity, could be deduced from these data. This intensification of the maskin

Neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and central auditory assessment. Part III: Corpus callosum and efferent pathways.

In this, the last of a three-part series on neuroanatomy/physiology related to central auditory assessment, two topics will be presented: the corpus callosum and the efferent auditory system. A general anatomical description of the corpus callosum is followed by information on the topographical representation of the cortex within the corpus callosum. Auditory areas of the corpus callosum and the transcallosal auditory pathway are emphasized. Data on transfer time across the corpus callosum and the possible role of inhibitory and excitatory fibers of this commissure are presented. Neuropsycholo

Localization of NADPH-diaphorase in pelvic afferent and efferent pathways of the rat.

The NADPH diaphorase histochemical reaction was used in combination with retrograde axonal transport of Fluorogold (FG) from the major pelvic ganglion (MPG) to determine if NADPH diaphorase is contained within afferent and preganglionic efferent pathways to pelvic visceral organs. In L6 and S1 dorsal root ganglia, 68.5% and 62.2%, respectively, of FG-labeled afferent neurons were NADPH-diaphorase positive. In the sacral parasympathetic nucleus (SPN) of the L6 and S1 spinal cord segments, 49.4% and 51.7%, respectively of FG labeled preganglionic efferent neurons were NADPH-diaphorase positive.

The efferent pathway hypothesis-A mini-review on conditioned immune enhancement.

Conditioned immune responses demonstrate that learned sensory cues can modulate peripheral immunity without re-exposure to the original immunological trigger. In 2026, this research area reaches the centennial of early Pavlovian immune-reflex experiments that already reported conditioned leukocyte shifts and enhancement-like resistance to infection. Although modern psychoneuroimmunology has been shaped largely by conditioned immunosuppression, conditioned immune enhancement remains comparatively less explored despite its relevance to anticipatory host defense, immune surveillance, tumor biolog
