Egocentrism, allocentrism, and Asperger syndrome.

In this paper, we attempt to make a distinction between egocentrism and allocentrism in social cognition, based on the distinction that is made in visuo-spatial perception. We propose that it makes a difference to mentalizing whether the other person can be understood using an egocentric ("you") or an allocentric ("he/she/they") stance. Within an egocentric stance, the other person is represented in relation to the self. By contrast, within an allocentric stance, the existence or mental state of the other person needs to be represented as independent from the self. We suggest here that people

A comparison of two measures of egocentrism.

This study examined the relationship between two prominent measures of egocentrism, Enright's Adolescent Egocentrism Scale (AES) and Elkind's Imaginary Audience Scale (IAS), in a sample of 458 adolescents, between 10 and 15 years old. Both correlational and factor analyses indicated that the two measures assess distinctly different phenomena. As predicted, IAS scores were correlated with self-reported levels of shyness, nervousness, and social skills. These results provide partial evidence for the validity of the IAS as a measure of self-consciousness, though not necessarily egocentrism per se

Early childhood autism and the question of egocentrism.

An individual's social competence is often considered in terms of his role-taking abilities. In the light of studies by Piaget, it has been supposed that a child's developing capacity to appreciate the viewpoints of others in a social context is reflected in his ability to recognize points of view in a visuospatial setting. If this is valid, then visuospatial role-taking tasks may afford a measure of some relatively "cognitive" component of the capacity to engage in social behavior. Tasks in which subjects were required to make judgments about different and yet related views of a three-dimensi

The Egocentricity Index as a measure of self-esteem and egocentric personality style for inpatient adolescents.

The Egocentricity Index (EI) was assessed as a measure of self-esteem, egocentric behavior, and a basic statistic in a population of 60 predominantly behavior disordered, inpatient adolescents. Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI) scales served as criterion measures. A low mean EI was found in these youngsters but was not mediated by low self-esteem as the Index was uncorrelated with self-esteem/self-concept measures. The Index did correlate with an histrionic type of egocentric personality style. The purported association between the EI components of pair and reflection responses wa

Targeting adolescent risk-taking behaviors: the contributions of egocentrism and sensation-seeking.

Tremendous resources are spent each year developing programs and messages targeting adolescent risk behavior. Adolescents are often reasonably well educated about methods for health promotion such as preventing HIV infection, yet they fail to act accordingly. One widely used individual difference variable, sensation-seeking, has been incorporated in health message design to some extent, but it fails to take development into account. Research on adolescent egocentrism suggests adolescents experience personal fable which can lead to an exaggerated sense of invulnerability. The present study samp

Egocentrism and ego resiliency: personality characteristics associated with perspective-taking from early childhood to adolescence.

In this study we examined the longitudinal relation between ego resiliency and egocentrism. Measures of Level 1 and Level 2 egocentrism were administered to one hundred eleven 3 1/2-year-old children. Independent personality evaluations were available on these children at ages 3, 4, 7, 11, and 14 in the form of Q-sort ratings by independent sets of teachers and examiners. The relation between egocentrism and ego resiliency was observed to depend on level of egocentrism, as well as on sex of subject. In the sample of girls, both Level 1 and Level 2 egocentrism were negatively correlated with eg

Tenodesis Grasp Detection in Egocentric Video.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) can impair motor function in the upper limbs. Video from wearable cameras (egocentric video) has the potential to provide monitoring of rehabilitation outcomes at home, but methods for automated analysis of this data are needed. Wrist flexion and extension are essential elements to track grasping strategies after cSCI, as they may reflect the use of the tenodesis grasp, a common compensatory strategy. However, there is no established method to evaluate wrist flexion and extension from egocentric video. METHODS: We propose a machine-learning-based

A study on the independence of egocentric and allocentric neglect.

Currently there seems to be consensus that visuospatial neglect may involve egocentric and allocentric symptoms. However, the relation between the two is still discussed and models have been proposed based on the high correlation between allocentric and egocentric neglect symptoms. To analyze the relation between these two kinds of symptoms we developed a new paradigm. In contrast to previous paradigms, we varied the extension of the search field and we added centered reference targets to evaluate egocentric effects independent from allocentric effects. Patients with exclusively left-sided neg

The egocentric reference for visual exploration and orientation.

Clinical signs of damage to the egocentric reference system range from the inability to detect stimuli in the real environment to a defect in recovering items from an internal representation. Despite clinical dissociations, current interpretations consider all symptoms as due to a single perturbation, differentially expressed according to the medium explored (perceptual or representational). We propose an alternative account based on the functional distinction between two separate egocentric mechanisms: one allowing construction of the immediate point of view, the other extracting a required p

Emotional Egocentricity Bias Across the Life-Span.

In our daily lives, we often have to quickly estimate the emotions of our conspecifics in order to have successful social interactions. While this estimation process seems quite easy when we are ourselves in a neutral or equivalent emotional state, it has recently been shown that in case of incongruent emotional states between ourselves and the others, our judgments can be biased. This phenomenon, introduced to the literature with the term Emotional Egocentricity Bias (EEB), has been found to occur in young adults and, to a greater extent, in children. However, how the EEB changes across the l

Egocentric social network analysis of pathological gambling.

AIMS: To apply social network analysis (SNA) to investigate whether frequency and severity of gambling problems were associated with different network characteristics among friends, family and co-workers is an innovative way to look at relationships among individuals; the current study was the first, to our knowledge, to apply SNA to gambling behaviors. DESIGN: Egocentric social network analysis was used to characterize formally the relationships between social network characteristics and gambling pathology. SETTING: Laboratory-based questionnaire and interview administration. PARTICIPANTS:

Disturbed egocentric space representation in cervical dystonia.

In addition to visual spatial input, vestibular and proprioceptive signals are used in judging the egocentric space. We asked whether the abnormal head posture of patients with cervical dystonia (CD) is associated with distortions of their internal spatial reference frame. The perception of subjective straight-ahead (SSA) was tested under various conditions in 28 CD patients and in matched controls. They were asked to direct a laser pointer to the position that they believed to be "straight ahead" relative to their bodies' orientation (body-centered spatial perception). Body-independent visual

Egocentric mental rotation in Hungarian dyslexic children.

A mental rotation task was given to 27 dyslexic children (mean age 9 years, 2 months) and to 28 non-dyslexic children (mean age 8 years, 8 months). Pictures of right and left hands were shown at angles of 0, 50, 90 and 180 degrees, and the subjects were required to indicate whether what was shown was a right hand or a left hand. It was found that, in this task, the dyslexics did not show the normal pattern of response times at different angles, and also, that they made more errors than the controls. It is argued that this result is compatible with hypothesis that, in typical cases of dyslexia,

Egocentric and allocentric reference frames for catching a falling object.

When programming movement, one must account for gravitational acceleration. This is particularly important when catching a falling object because the task requires a precise estimate of time-to-contact. Knowledge of gravity's effects is intimately linked to our definition of 'up' and 'down'. Both directions can be described in an allocentric reference frame, based on visual and/or gravitational cues, or in an egocentric reference frame in which the body axis is taken as vertical. To test which frame humans use to predict gravity's effect, we asked participants to intercept virtual balls approa

Egocentric disorientation following bilateral parietal lobe damage.

Aguirre and D'Esposito (1999) suggested a taxonomy and theoretical framework for understanding topographical disorders. One of the problems they described involved egocentric disorientation, in which deficits are not strictly confined to the topographical sphere but are seen on a wide variety of visuo-spatial paradigms. Here, we report a neuropsychological investigation of MU, a person with egocentric disorientation. To test the usefulness of Aguirre and D'Esposito's framework, we administered tests which were predicted to be easy or difficult for people with egocentric disorientation to show

Egocentric and allocentric spatial memory in idiopathic cervical dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether impaired spatial memory contributes to cognitive deficits in idiopathic cervical dystonia (ICD). METHODS: The authors tested 16 untreated patients with ICD and 16 healthy controls with four variants of a classic spatial memory task, in which subjects were requested to recall the locations of 16 toy objects either immediately after their presentation or after an unfilled delay of 10 minutes. By varying the spatial relationship between subject and toy object array, we tested encoding and memory of spatial relationships between subject and toy objects (egocentri

Coding of egocentric distance in the macaque ventral intraparietal area.

The encoding of three-dimensional visual information is of important in everyday life. Eye-movements challenge this spatial encoding: they shift the image of the outside world across the retina. In the macaque ventral intraparietal area (VIP), many neurons encode visual information irrespective of horizontal and vertical eye position. Does this gaze invariance of spatial encoding extend to egocentric distances? Such invariance would correspond to a shift of disparity-tuning curves by vergence angle. Here, monkeys fixated one of three distances (vergence), while a visual stimulus was shown at o

Spatial and egocentric mental rotation in patients with cervical dystonia.

Mental rotation has attracted the interest of cognitive research on dystonia, but at the moment, contrasting data are available on whether this complex cognitive ability is impaired in the disorder. Here, we assessed spatial and egocentric mental rotation in patients with cervical dystonia (CD). Patients with CD and healthy controls were required to perform a letter rotation task (spatial mental rotation) and to judge laterality of front-facing and back-facing human images (egocentric mental rotation). CD patients were selectively impaired on letter rotation, whereas they did not differ from c

Using a proprioceptive "straight-ahead" pointing task, we determined the position of the subjective sagittal middle in thirty unselected patients with unilateral vascular lesions in the right hemisphere and twenty-two normal controls. Patients with extensive right parietal damage (n = 16) showed an ipsilesional (rightward) deviation of their egocentric reference, whereas patients with lesions that substantially spared the right parietal lobe (n = 14) showed a contralesional (leftward) deviation. No significant correlation emerged between the position of the egocentric reference and the perform
