Studies on site finding and site specificity of Eimeria praecox, Eimeria maxima and Eimeria acervulina in chickens.

Sporozoites of 3 species of Eimeria were introduced into the caecum of young chickens. E. praecox and E. maxima failed to develop in this site, but light infections of E. acervulina were detected. Infection of the small intestine with all 3 species occurred when sporozoites were introduced via the caecum. Infections were produced when mucosal scrapings of small intestine from birds, inoculated via the caecum 1-4 h previously, were inoculated orally to susceptible chickens. Experiments with 51Cr-labelled sporozoites of E. praecox introduced in the caecum, confirmed that small numbers of sporozo

Characterization and localization of an Eimeria-specific protein in Eimeria maxima.

A recently completed analysis of Eimeria maxima transcriptome identified a gene with homology to sequences expressed by E. tenella and E. acervulina but lacking homology with other organisms including other apicomplexans. This gene, designated Eimeria-specific protein (ESP), codes for a protein with a predicted molecular weight of 19 kDa. The ESP gene was cloned and the recombinant protein expressed in bacteria and purified for preparation of specific antisera. Quantitative RT-PCR showed transcription of ESP was low in unsporulated oocysts and after 24 h of sporulation. However, transcription

Protection of hatchlings against coccidiosis by maternal antibodies to four recombinant proteins of Eimeria tenella, Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria maxima.

Maternally derived IgG antibodies to protective Eimeria antigens have great potential to control chicken coccidiosis and multivalent vaccines are more practical to resist against co-infection with several species of Eimeria under natural conditions. In this study, five good protective antigens of Eimeria species were combined into two combinations based on previous studies, namely C1(EtROPK-Eten5-A, EtGAM22, Ea3-1E and EmGAM56) and C2(EtM2AP and EtGAM22, Ea3-1E and EmGAM56). Then, five antigens were expressed in the Escherichia coli system and purified to inoculate breeding hens. After three t

The impact of maturity on the ability of Eimeria acervulina and Eimeria meleagrimitis oocysts to sporulate.

The sporulation of oocysts of Eimeria that infect poultry is known to be under the influence of environmental conditions, including temperature, oxygen supply, and moisture. However, even when these conditions are optimal, the level of sporulation can remain low. The effect of oocyst maturity on their ability to sporulate was investigated for two species of Eimeria: E. acervulina of chickens, and E. meleagrimitis of turkeys. After oral infection of birds, oocysts were collected at their production site in the intestine at different times around the prepatent period. The percentage of sporulati

Ionophore susceptibility of Eimeria zaria: First characterisation in a cryptic Eimeria species of chickens.

Seven Eimeria species have long been recognised in chickens, but molecular analyses over the past two decades have revealed unexpected diversity within the genus, identifying three candidate new species: Eimeria lata, E. nagambie, and E. zaria. Despite increasing reports of these species, their biology and epidemiology remain poorly understood. Current commercial anticoccidial vaccines do not effectively control them, and their drug sensitivities have not been characterised. Here, the efficacy of three anticoccidial drugs, monensin + nicarbazin ("Monimax"), narasin ("Monteban"), and salinomyci

Eimeria: Navigating complex intestinal ecosystems.

Eimeria is an intracellular obligate apicomplexan parasite that parasitizes the intestinal epithelial cells of livestock and poultry, exhibiting strong host and tissue tropism. Parasite-host interactions involve complex networks and vary as the parasites develop in the host. However, understanding the underlying mechanisms remains a challenge. Acknowledging the lack of studies on Eimeria invasion mechanism, we described the possible invasion process through comparative analysis with other apicomplexan parasites and explored the fact that parasite-host interactions serve as a prerequisite for s

The structure of a major surface antigen SAG19 from Eimeria tenella unifies the Eimeria SAG family.

In infections by apicomplexan parasites including Plasmodium, Toxoplasma gondii, and Eimeria, host interactions are mediated by proteins including families of membrane-anchored cysteine-rich surface antigens (SAGs) and SAG-related sequences (SRS). Eimeria tenella causes caecal coccidiosis in chickens and has a SAG family with over 80 members making up 1% of the proteome. We have solved the structure of a representative E. tenella SAG, EtSAG19, revealing that, despite a low level of sequence similarity, the entire Eimeria SAG family is unified by its three-layer αβα fold which is related to tha

Pathogenicity in Chicken Anemia Virus with Eimeria tenella: Concurrent Co-Infection and Secondary Eimeria tenella Infection.

Chicken anemia virus (CAV) and Eimeria tenella (E. tenella) are economically important pathogens of the poultry industry worldwide. However, the impact of dual infection of these two pathogens in chickens remains unclear. This study investigated the pathogenic effects of dual infection with CAV and E. tenella using two trials. In Trial A, chickens were infected at 21 days of age (D21) with either CAV and E. tenella simultaneously (C21 + T21), CAV alone (C21a), E. tenella alone (T21), or PBS as a negative control (NC). In Trial B, chickens received CAV at D21 followed by E. tenella at D28 (C21

Isolation of Bacillus altitudinis A7 from Eimeria-immunized chickens and its inhibitory effect on Eimeria tenella.

Eimeria spp. are responsible for chicken coccidiosis, the most important enteric protozoan disease in poultry, resulting in significant economic losses for the poultry industry. With the prohibition of antibiotic use in animal husbandry, researchers must find alternative preventive agents. The objective of this study was to isolate Bacillus strains and evaluate the anti-Eimeria tenella effects of B. altitudinis A7. In total, four Bacillus strains (A1, A5, A6, and A7) were isolated from the fresh feces of E. tenella-immunized chickens, and three Bacillus species, B. pumilus T246 (A1), B. altitu

Protective efficacy of Lactobacillus plantarum BS22 against Eimeria tenella and Eimeria acervulina co-infection in broiler chickens.

Avian coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria spp., is a major constraint on global poultry production, and mixed-species infections-particularly Eimeria tenella and Eimeria acervulina-are common and more pathogenic in the broiler breeding. Rising concerns over anticoccidial drug resistance and residues have stimulated interest in probiotics as alternative or complementary control strategies. This study evaluated the protective efficacy of Lactobacillus plantarum BS22 (LP-BS22), a chicken-derived strain with confirmed in vitro antimicrobial activity and stability, against this clinically prevalent mixe

Assessment of probiotics supplementation via feed or water on the growth performance, intestinal morphology and microflora of chickens after experimental infection with Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima and Eimeria tenella.

In this study, the effect of probiotic supplementation via drinking water or feed on the performance of broiler chickens experimentally infected with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria acervulina (5 × 10(4)), Eimeria maxima and Eimeria tenella (2 × 10(4) each one) at 14 days of age was evaluated. Two hundred and forty 1-day-old Ross 308 male chicks were separated into eight equal groups with three replicates. Two of the groups, one infected with mixed Eimeria oocysts and the other not, were given a basal diet and served as controls. The remaining groups were also challenged with mixed Eimeria speci

Evaluation of the anticoccidial activity of secondary metabolites in alpine plants using a mouse Eimeria model, Eimeria krijgsmanni.

Coccidiosis is a highly pathogenic disease caused by a protozoan parasite, severely impacting the global livestock economy. Due to the emergence of drug resistance to current anticoccidial agents, developing novel anticoccidial compounds, such as plant secondary metabolites, is necessary, as previously studied. The objective of the present study is to deepen the understanding of the anticoccidial activity of these natural compounds and to investigate their potential as anticoccidial drugs. Here, we examined the anticoccidial activity of 27 natural compounds, containing 28 secondary metabolites

The in vitro and in vivo anti-virulent effect of organic acid mixtures against Eimeria tenella and Eimeria bovis.

Eimeria tenella and Eimeria bovis are complex parasites responsible for the condition of coccidiosis, that invade the animal gastrointestinal intestinal mucosa causing severe diarrhoea, loss of appetite or abortions, with devastating impacts on the farming industry. The negative impacts of these parasitic infections are enhanced by their role in promoting the colonisation of the gut by common foodborne pathogens. The aim of this study was to test the anti-Eimeria efficacy of maltodextrin, sodium chloride, citric acid, sodium citrate, silica, malic acid, citrus extract, and olive extract indivi

Pathogenesis of Eimeria praecox in chickens: virulence of field strains compared with laboratory strains of E. praecox and Eimeria acervulina.

The pathogenesis in chickens of the apicomplexan Eimeria praecox was compared with that of Eimeria acervulina, using intestinal lesions, mucosal integrity, body weight gain (BWG) and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) as criteria. Characteristics of each species were described by combinations of polymerase chain reaction assays and classic parasitological signs. There were considerable overlaps in lengths, breadths, shape indices and volumes of the oocysts of each species. Both species caused statistically significant reductions in BWG at the lowest inocula tested (500,000 sporulated oocysts per

Eimeria in the Xochimilco axolotl Ambystoma mexicanum.

Coccidia are protozoal parasites that can cause coccidiosis, a disease linked to high mortality in young, stressed, and overcrowded animals. In the order Urodela, only 21 coccidia species have been registered, and none in the Critically Endangered Ambystoma mexicanum. The present study presents the detection and follow-up of Eimeria in A. mexicanum. The monitoring was conducted at CIBAC (Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas y Acuícolas de Cuemanco), analyzing fecal samples from 90 juveniles using sedimentation, Faust, and modified Zajíček McMaster techniques. An overall prevalence of 65.6% was

Eimeria infections in goats in Southern Portugal.

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species is a major form of intestinal infection affecting intensively and semi-intensively reared goats. The province of Alentejo is the main goat-producing area in Portugal. Therefore, all 15 Serpentina goat farms in Alentejo were analyzed regarding the occurrence and diversity of Eimeria species. Fecal samples obtained from 144 animals (52.1% dairy goats, 47.9% pre-pubertal goats) were examined using the modified McMaster technique to determine the number of oocysts per gram of feces. Eimeria spp. oocysts were present in 98.61% of the fecal samples and, overall,

[Isolation and description of a new species of Eimeria in rabbits (Orychtolagus cuniculus) : Eimeria pellerdyi P. Coudert, 1977 (Sporozoa, Coccidia)].

Several pure isolates of Coccidia have been obtained in coccidia-free Rabbits by methods taking advantage of differences in the duration of their life-cycle and their site of development, as well as by the inoculation of experimentally immunized animals. Among these isolates one has been shown to represent a new species for which we propose the name: Eimeria pellerdyi P. Coudert, 1977. The oocysts of this species are of medium size (21 x 30 mu), without oocystic residual body. The endogenous life-cycle is completed in 10 days. Schizogony takes place in the superficial epithelial cells of the c

Eimeria of chickens: the changing face of an old foe.

ABSTRACTEimeria are globally enzootic parasites that can cause coccidiosis in chickens. Until recently, remarkably little had changed over the last 40 years in the fundamental biology that underpins detection and control of Eimeria. Tools such as microscopy and lesion scoring remain central to diagnosis, and control still relies on routine supplementation of diets with anticoccidial drugs or application of live vaccines. However, refocusing on aspects of economics, molecular biology, and bacteriology that relate to coccidiosis has prompted considerable change in dogma. The cost of coccidiosis
