Among the relatively few flowering plants with strongly heteromorphic XY chromosomes are dioecious species of Hippophae (Elaeagnaceae). To understand the evolution of these sex chromosomes, we generated haplotype-resolved genomes for H. rhamnoides and H. tibetana, carried out ancestral karyotype reconstruction using Elaeagnus mollis (with bisexual flowers) as the outgroup, inferred the location of the sex-linked regions (SLRs), and used transcriptome data to test for dosage compensation. In H. rhamnoides, the X chromosome is 30% larger than the Y and in H. tibetana 15%, a difference primarily

Plants of the Elaeagnaceae family are widely used to treat various health disorders owing to their natural phytochemicals. Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is an economically and ecologically important species within the family with richness of biologically and pharmacologically active substances. Here, we present a chromosome-level genome assembly of seabuckthorn (http://hipp.shengxin.ren/), the first genome sequence of Elaeagnaceae, which has a total length of 849.04 Mb with scaffold N50 of 69.52 Mb and 30 864 annotated genes. Two sequential tetraploidizations with one occurring ~36-41

The new generation vaccines containing purified antigens are safer to use but generally induce weaker immune responses. Therefore, purified subunit vaccines require the addition of an exogenous adjuvant to enhance the immune response to the antigens following immunization. In the present study, a molecule has been isolated and characterized from 70% ethanolic extract of the medicinal plant Hippophaerhamnoides L. (Elaeagnaceae), commonly known as seabuckthorn (SBT). In this study, we have fractionated SBT leaf extract using solvents to identify the bioactive compound(s) and evaluated its adjuva

CONTEXT: Diabetes mellitus represents a group of metabolic disorders that can adversely affect numerous organ systems, including the skeletal system. It elevates bone fragility and causes secondary osteoporosis, known as diabetic bone disease (DBD). The treatment of DBD depends on the control of hyperglycemia supplemented with anti-osteoporotic agents, but this has unsatisfactory efficiency.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides a comprehensive review on the effects of Elaeagnus rhamnoides (L.) A. Nelson (sea buckthorn; family Elaeagnaceae), a prospective anti-diabetic and osteoprotective suppleme

The present study focused on synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and CuO NPs using Elaeagnus indica leaf extract as reducing and stabilizing agents using Zn(O2CCH3)2 and Cu2SO4, respectively, for the first time. We have confirmed the formation of aggregated ZnO NPs and CuO NPs with phytochemicals by various spectral analyses and electron microscopy studies. The size of synthesized ZnO NPs and CuO NPs were in the range of 20-30 nm and 30-40 nm, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of ZnO NPs at 75 μg concentration is superior against Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumonia, Bacillus s

Cardiovascular diseases are a broadly understood concept focusing on vascular and heart dysfunction. Lack of physical exercise, type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, thromboembolism, and kidney and lung diseases all contribute to the development of heart and blood vessel dysfunction. Although effective and important, traditional treatment with diuretics, statins, beta blockers, calcium inhibitors, ACE inhibitors, and anti-platelet drugs remains a second-line treatment after dietary interventions and lifestyle changes. Scientists worldwide are still looking for an herbal product

This study aimed to optimize the ultrasonic/microwave-assisted extraction (UAME) technique of Elaeagnus angustifolia polysaccharides (EAP-UM) by response surface methodology (RSM). The optimum conditions include: solid-liquid ratio of 1:23 g/mL, ultrasonic power of 252 W, microwave power of 417 W, and extraction time of 11 min. Under these conditions, the yield of polysaccharides reached 7.87%, superior to ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE, 5.74%), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE, 6.86%), and hot water extraction (HWE, 4.91%). UAME could also result in higher carbohydrate, protein, and ur

OBJECTIVE: One common issue experienced by women after vaginal delivery is the occurrence of postpartum afterpains. These pains are primarily caused by the release of prostaglandins. While chemical medications are usually used to manage and lessen these pains, concerns about their side effects have sparked an increased interest in herbal remedies. Among medicinal plants, the fruit of Elaeagnus angustifolia (Senjed) contains flavonoids and alkaloids that can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis pathways, thus reducing the intensity of postpartum afterpains. Therefore, the current study aimed to asse

Managing root-knot nematodes, particularly Meloidogyne incognita, is a significant difficulty in sustainable agriculture because of the environmental toxicity of synthetic chemical nematicides. This study uses leaf extracts of Krascheninnikovia ceratoides (KC) and Elaeagnus angustifolia (EA) to synthesize silver (KC-AgNPs) and iron (EA-FeNPs) nanoparticles in a fast and environmentally friendly manner. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, and UV-visible spectroscopy, and their UV-visible spectral profiles were monitored for 30 days and under pH and temperature stress. XRD-derived

The presence of mucilage cells in plants, studied mainly in vegetative organs, is a condition shared by several taxonomic groups and aspects related to their diversity have been discussed with systematic purposes. This study explores the flower distribution and classification of mucilage cells in Rosales species, with inferences about flower functions. Floral buds from fifty-seven species representing seven of nine families recognized in the Rosales were sampled and processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. Mucilage cells were found in about 40% of the studied species of Cannab

The nitrogen-fixing root nodule symbiosis is restricted to four plant orders: Fabales (legumes), Fagales, Cucurbitales and Rosales (Elaeagnaceae, Rhamnaceae, and Rosaceae). Interestingly all of the Rosaceae genera confirmed to contain nodulating species (i.e., Cercocarpus, Chamaebatia, Dryas, and Purshia) belong to a single subfamily, the Dryadoideae. The Dryas genus is particularly interesting from an evolutionary perspective because it contains closely related nodulating (Dryas drummondii) and non-nodulating species (Dryas octopetala). The close phylogenetic relationship between these two sp
