Elaeocarpus grandis has a very potent analgesic effect, especially to a δ-opioid receptor, but its antiulcer activity has not yet been validated. Therefore, the present study was carried out to evaluate the antiulcer potential of the total methanolic extract and its derived fractions of the aerial parts of the plant using an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer method. One new compound, grandisine H (1), and five known compounds, P-methoxy benzaldehyde, methyl gallate, kaempferol, quercetin and heterophyllin A (2-6), were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction, which was the most potent one wi

The prevalence and socioeconomic impact of metabolic diseases is rapidly growing. The limited availability of effective and affordable treatments has fuelled interest in the therapeutic potential of natural compounds as they occur in selected food sources. These compounds might help to better manage the current problems of treatment availability, affordability, and adverse effects that, in combination, limit treatment duration and efficacy at present. Specifically, berries garnered interest given a strong epidemiological link between their consumption and improved metabolic functions, making t

The antidiabetic efficacy of Elaeocarpus grandis, belonging to the Family Elaeocarpaceae, was investigated using the streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia model. The ethyl acetate and petroleum ether fractions demonstrated a notable hypoglycemic impact in a rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), compared to the negative control group. The chemical assessment of these fractions resulted in the isolation and identification of six known compounds (17-22). LC-HR-ESI-MS metabolomic profiling yielded the provisional identification of sixteen metabolites (1-16) across various chemical classes.

We previously reported that the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of a 70% ethanol extract of Elaeocarpus sylvestris (ESE) inhibits varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) replication in vitro. PGG (1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-ß-D-glucose) is a major chemical constituent of the EtOAc fraction of ESE that inhibits VZV but not HCMV replication. In this study, we comprehensively screened the chemical compounds identified in the EtOAc fraction of ESE for potential antiviral properties. Among the examined compounds, quercetin and isoquercitrin displayed potent antiviral activities

Aristotelia chilensis (maqui) extracts have garnered interest for their potential bioactivity, yet their specific effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology remain understudied. This study evaluated the neuroprotective properties of white and black maqui fruit extracts against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity and β-amyloid (Aβ) fibrillogenesis in vitro. Pre-treatment with maqui extracts significantly mitigated glutamate toxicity, increasing cell viability from 26.8% in glutamate-treated cells to 49.9% and 48.8% for white and black maqui, respectively. Furthermore, the extracts reduced Fluor

BACKGROUND: In immunocompromised patients, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection can lead to severe, life-threatening diseases, such as pneumonitis, hepatitis, gastrointestinal tract disease, and retinitis. We previously reported that a 70% ethanol extract of Elaeocarpus sylvestris leaves (ESE) inhibits human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) replication in vitro. In the present study, we determined the solvent fraction of ESE that inhibits HCMV replication using activity-guided fractionation.
METHODS: Activity-guided fractionation of ESE was performed to determine the solvent fraction that inhibits HC

BACKGROUND: Herpesviruses are common animal and human pathogens that cause severe health problems in children, immunocompromised patients, and infected animals with a host range from fish to mammals. Anthocyanin-containing plant extracts have been described as potent antivirals, which might cause fewer harmful side effects than direct-acting antivirals. Here, we report that an extract of Aristotelia chilensis (Molina) Stuntz (Elaeocarpaceae) (MBE) with a high content of the anthocyanin delphinidin suppresses lytic replication of equine, murine and human herpesviruses of replication in vitro.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plant cyanogenesis is the release of toxic cyanide from endogenous cyanide-containing compounds, typically cyanogenic glycosides. Despite a large body of phytochemical, taxonomic and ecological work on cyanogenic species, little is known of their frequency in natural plant communities. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of cyanogenesis in Australian tropical rainforests. Secondary aims were to quantify the cyanogenic glycoside content of tissues, to investigate intra-plant and intra-population variation in cyanogenic glycoside concentration and to appraise the p
