The structure of the receptor cells in the olfactory organ of the rays Raja clavata and Dasyatis pastinaca and spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias is similar to that of the olfactory cells in other Vertebrates, although their tops are invariably crowned by microvilli, not flagella. In the peripheral process of these cells of Elasmobranchs and some other vertebrates represent a special type of the olfactory receptors which originated as the result of differentiation of primary olfactory cells supplied both by flagella and by microvilli. Collections from the dwarf sawfish, Pristis clavata, near Darwin, Australia, in 1997 led to the discovery of the new onchoproteocephalidean genus Matticestus n. gen.-a taxon that has been referred to in molecular phylogenetic analyses in which it has been included as "New genus 8." Its type species, Matticestus anneae n. gen., n. sp., and a second species, Matticestus kathleenae n. sp., are described. Placement of this taxon in the Onchoproteocephalidea is supported morphologically in that both species bear a scolex with 4 bothridia each with a pair of bi-pronged hooks and spinitriches that ex

Recordings from the intact nervus terminalis with a hook electrode or from a stump of the divided nerve with a suction electrode show a tonic, irregular discharge of broad, low frequency spikes in ca. 4-6 units. These nerve impulses are efferent from the brain. The mean frequency of discharge is not influenced by various chemical, thermal, tactile, acoustic, photic, vibratory and electric field stimuli but is decreased by certain forms of mechanical stimuli, presumably acting on the lateral line organs of the lateral aspect of the head. We have not succeeded in recording from afferents. The ne

Monogeneans of the genus Calicotyle Diesing, 1850 were found in the cloaca of the Arafura skate Okamejei boesemani (Ishihara, 1987) from the coastal waters of Vietnam. A partial 28S rDNA sequence (822 bp) was obtained from the collected specimen and deposited in GenBank (accession number PP868284). Comparative analysis with the available 28S rDNA sequences of Calicotyle spp. in the NCBI database revealed the smallest p-distances with the C. kroyeri Diesing, 1850 species complex. However, the genetic distance between the obtained sequence and C. kroyeri (AF279746) from its type host, Amblyraja

A contrast radiographic study of pectoral fin venous drainage in rays shows it to be morphologically conservative across the batoids studied. In all species examined, ventral propterygial and mesopterygial veins drain the anterior and posterior lobes of the fin, respectively. Variation in the central connections of these vessels enables the identification of four major patterns of drainage. A fifth pattern consists of additional veins that drain the central region of the fin between the zones drained by the pro- and mesopterygial veins. There is a significant, positive association between the

The purpose of this study was to describe the structure of the reproductive tract of males of Potamotrygon magdalenae before, during, and after they acquire sexual maturity, and to establish the first maturity scale for males within the family Potamotrygonidae. The male reproductive tract of P. magdalenae is composed of testes, efferent ducts, epididymides, deferent ducts, seminal vesicles, Leydig, alkaline, and clasper glands, and claspers, all of which are paired and functional. Four sexual maturity stages were established: immature, maturing, reproductively active, and resting. The degree o

Yorkeria chonburiensis n. sp. (Tetraphyllidea: Onchobothriidae) is described from the spiral intestine of a specimen of the brownbanded bamboo shark, Chiloscyllium punctatum, collected from the Gulf of Thailand, Chon Buri Province, Thailand. Yorkeria chonburiensis n. sp. is distinguished from all other species of Yorkeria by the pattern of proglottids (craspedote as opposed to acraspedote) and the proglottid number (more than 168). The new species is larger than all other members of Yorkeria, and the medial hooks are slightly larger than the lateral hooks with a ratio of 1:1.87-1:1.96. The pos

The fossil record of chondrichthyans (chimaeras, sharks, rays and skates) consists largely of isolated teeth, with holomorphic specimens being extraordinary exceptions. However, numerous of these more or less completely preserved specimens are known from several Upper Jurassic deposits of Europe, enabling detailed analysis of their morphology. Batomorphs (rays and skates) resembling modern guitarfishes and wedgefishes (Rhinopristiformes) are among the most common Jurassic chondrichthyans found, but they have been only sporadically studied up to now, resulting in large knowledge gaps concerning

Eocene deposits of the famous La Meseta Formation of Seymour Island, Antarctic Peninsula, yielded the most diverse Paleogene fossil elasmobranch association of the Southern Hemisphere. In this assemblage, sharks clearly dominate the fauna, whereas batoids are very rare components. Herein, we describe two new taxa of cold water tolerant skates, Marambioraja leiostemma gen. et sp. nov., and Mesetaraja maleficapelli gen. et sp. nov., two new species of the genus Raja, Raja amphitrita sp. nov. and Raja manitaria sp. nov., as well as remains of warm water adapted myliobatiforms. Reports of teratogenic embryos in elasmobranchs have been documented in multiple species, with proposed aetiologies including environmental disturbances, genetic mutations, predation, exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds and maternal stress. Nevertheless, complex congenital malformations such as bicephaly remain exceptionally rare, particularly among freshwater stingrays of the family Potamotrygonidae. The present study constitutes the first record of bicephaly in the genus Potamotrygon, documenting multiple congenital anomalies in two embryos from a single litter. One female embryo exhi

Rays are an iconic group of chondrichthyan fishes, with many species currently threatened with extinction. Although conservation laws exist in Bangladesh to protect their population, lack of comprehensive law enforcement strategies together with commercial exploitation and habitat destruction resulted in population decline of many species nonetheless. One significant challenge to this conservation effort is a rapid and authentic species identification strategy, as traditional morphological diagnosis is hindered by frequent misidentification, especially when species are morphologically similar

Two new species of Scyphophyllidium Woodland, 1927 are described from the Hooktooth shark, Chaenogaleus macrostoma (Bleeker), from the Persian Gulf, Iran. Scyphophyllidium hormuziense n. sp. is assigned to morphological category 2 of its genus because it possesses bothridial marginal loculi and an apical sucker on each flat bothridium, and lacks bothridial facial loculi. Within category 2, it is distinguished from its congeners, except for S. janineae (Ruhnke, Healy and Shapero, 2006), by possessing, rather than lacking, a prominent cephalic peduncle. It differs from S. janineae in the distrib

A new species of Calicotyle (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from three deepwater catshark species (Elasmobranchii: Pentanchidae) collected off Iceland. Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. is diagnosed as a species of Calicotyle possessing a haptor with one central and seven peripheral loculi, two hamuli, and several hooklets. It is distinguished from all congeners by the absence of eye spots, having a once-looped male copulatory organ, two U-shaped vaginae, and intercaecal vaginal pores. A molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 28S ribosomal DNA sequences placed Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. wit

Sharks possess varied diets and different prey capture mechanisms. As a result, the group exhibits a significant diversity in dental morphology, also reflecting the internal structures of the teeth. Internal dental anatomy points to the existence of three histotypes in elasmobranch phylogeny: orthodont, osteodont, and pseudoosteodont. Priohybodus arambourgi, the oldest known hybodontiform to exhibit fully serrated edges on a multicuspidated tooth crown, a pattern observed in numerous modern sharks, was recently recorded in Upper Jurassic strata of the Tucano Basin, Northeastern Brazil. Pseudocarcharias kamoharai (Matsubara, 1936) (Elasmobranchii: Lamniformes) is a small, viviparous, pseudocarchariid shark distributed throughout tropical ocean waters worldwide. Although the appendicular skeleton of elasmobranchs has been explored in the literature, little is known about the clasper skeleton. Additionally, the appendicular musculature in general is not well studied in elasmobranchs, especially that of the pelvic fins and claspers. The same can be said about the siphon sac, a muscular bladder associated with the clasper and related to reproduction in male elasmobranchs. Here, w

The dermal denticles are among the unique morphological adaptations of sharks, which have been acquired throughout their long evolutionary process of more than 400 million years. Species-specific morphological characteristics of these structures has been applied specially as tools for functional and taxonomic (family-level) studies. Nevertheless, few studies have explored the diversity of denticle structure in different around the body and oral cavity. In the present study, we described the morphological differences observed in skin and oral cavity of sharpnose sevengill shark Heptranchias per

Maternal nutrient provisioning occurs in most live-bearing chondrichthyan lineages. It is particularly conspicuous in the Myliobatiformes, whereby the endometrium secretes a nutrient-rich histotroph that is utilized by the developing embryo. The occurrence of a deformed and mouthless, late-term myliobatiform embryo is described here, demonstrating that the direct, oral ingestion of histotroph is not obligatory in these animals.

In the last few years, the detailed revision of the Eocene cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) from the Bolca Lagerstätte (Italy) has provided new insights into the fish biodiversity of the western Tethys. The morphological analysis of three previously undescribed specimens from the Pesciara deposit of Bolca revealed the existence of a new stingray taxon, †Lessiniabatis aenigmatica gen. et sp. nov., which is unique among the myliobatiform batoids in having the following unique combination of characters: low number of vertebrae posterior to the pelvic girdle (65-68); thoracolumbar synarcual e

Spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural organisation of the spermatozoon of the trypanorhynch cestode Aporhynchus menezesi Noever, Caira, Kuchta et Desjardins, 2010 are described by means of transmission electron microscopy. Type I spermiogenesis of A. menezesi starts with the formation of a differentiation zone containing two centrioles separated by an intercentriolar body constituted by five electron-dense plates. Each centriole gives rise to a free flagellum, which grows at an angle of 90 degrees in relation to a median cytoplasmic process. The nucleus and cortical microtubules elongate alon
