Elastic modulus of cetacean auditory ossicles.

In order to model the hearing capabilities of marine mammals (cetaceans), it is necessary to understand the mechanical properties, such as elastic modulus, of the middle ear bones in these species. Biologically realistic models can be used to investigate the biomechanics of hearing in cetaceans, much of which is currently unknown. In the present study, the elastic moduli of the auditory ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes) of eight species of cetacean, two baleen whales (mysticete) and six toothed whales (odontocete), were measured using nanoindentation. The two groups of mysticete ossicles o

The modulus of elasticity of lobster aorta microfibrils.

The presence of elastic fibres in the extracellular matrix (ECM) provides physiologically important elastic properties for many tissues. Until recently, microfibrils, one component of the ECM, were thought primarily to serve as a scaffolding on which elastin is deposited during development to form elaunin fibres [1]. The most prominent protein that forms mammalian microfibrils is fibrillin. It is known that mutations in the fibrillin gene cause a heterogenous connective tissue disease called Marfan syndrome [2], so information on mechanical properties of microfibrils or their role in tissue fu

Measurement of the elasticity modulus of soft tissues.

A measurement setup combined with a Finite Element (FE) simulation is presented to determine the elasticity modulus of soft materials as a function of frequency. The longterm goal of this work is to measure in vitro the elasticity modulus of human vocal folds over a frequency range that coincides with the range of human phonation. The results will assist numerical simulations modeling the phonation process by providing correct material parameters. Furthermore, the measurements are locally applied, enabling to determine spatial differences along the surface of the material. In this work the met

Determination of the modulus of elasticity of the human cornea.

PURPOSE: To determine the material behavior of the human cornea in the form of simple relationships between the modulus of elasticity and intraocular pressure (IOP) and to establish the effect of age on the material behavior. METHODS: Human corneal specimens with age between 50 and 95 years were tested under inflation conditions to determine their behavior. The corneas were subjected to two extreme load rates to represent dynamic and static loading conditions. The pressure-deformation results were analyzed using shell theory to derive the relationship between the modulus of elasticity and IOP

Skeletal muscle elastic modulus in marathon distance runners.

Skeletal muscle shear elastic modulus is a non-invasive surrogate for early detection of muscle damage and soreness consequent to unaccustomed eccentric muscle work. We investigated the influence of marathon distance running on skeletal muscle shear elastic modulus. Shear modulus of the rectus femoris was measured via ultrasound shear wave elastography in 80 participants (30 female, 50 male) before and after running a World Marathon Major. Experience level, muscle soreness and run readiness were surveyed. Pre-marathon shear elastic modulus was lower in competitive vs recreational runners (13.0

Vitamin A deficiency alters the pulmonary parenchymal elastic modulus and elastic fiber concentration in rats.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial hyperreactivity is influenced by properties of the conducting airways and the surrounding pulmonary parenchyma, which is tethered to the conducting airways. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is associated with an increase in airway hyperreactivity in rats and a decrease in the volume density of alveoli and alveolar ducts. To better define the effects of VAD on the mechanical properties of the pulmonary parenchyma, we have studied the elastic modulus, elastic fibers and elastin gene-expression in rats with VAD, which were supplemented with retinoic acid (RA) or remained unsupplem

Elastic modulus versus cell packing density in MDCK epithelial monolayers.

The elastic moduli of tissues are connected to their states of health and function. The epithelial monolayer is a simple, minimal, tissue model that is often used to gain understanding of mechanical behavior at the cellular or multi-cellular scale. Here we investigate how the elastic modulus of Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells depends on their packing density. Rather than measuring elasticity at the sub-cellular scale with local probes, we characterize the monolayer at the multi-cellular scale, as one would a thin slab of elastic material. We use a micro-indentation system to apply gentl

Extracellular Calcium Ion Concentration Regulates Chondrocyte Elastic Modulus and Adhesion Behavior.

Extracellular calcium ion concentration levels increase in human osteoarthritic (OA) joints and contribute to OA pathogenesis. Given the fact that OA is a mechanical problem, the effect of the extracellular calcium level ([Ca2+]) on the mechanical behavior of primary human OA chondrocytes remains to be elucidated. Here, we measured the elastic modulus and cell-ECM adhesion forces of human primary chondrocytes with atomic force microscopy (AFM) at different extracellular calcium ion concentration ([Ca2+]) levels. With the [Ca2+] level increasing from the normal baseline level, the elastic modul

Elastic modulus and migration capability of drug treated leukemia cells K562.

Leukemia is a commonly seen disease caused by abnormal differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells and blasting in bone marrow. Despite drugs are used to treat the disease clinically, the influence of these drugs on leukemia cells' biomechanical properties, which are closely related to complications like leukostasis or infiltration, is still unclear. Due to non-adherent and viscoelastic nature of leukemia cells, accurate measurement of their elastic modulus is still a challenging issue. In this study, we adopted rate-jump method together with optical tweezers indentation to accurately measure

Volumetric imaging of Young's modulus and nonlinear elasticity on the micro-scale.

Compression optical coherence elastography (OCE) provides micro-scale imaging of tissue and biomaterial mechanical properties in three dimensions (3-D), showing promise in a range of biomedical applications. Despite substantial progress, most 3-D OCE techniques do not account for the nonlinear elastic response of tissue, resulting in deformation-dependent variations in estimated Young's modulus within an image that reduce reliability and confound comparison both within and between samples. In this work, we overcome these limitations by explicitly accounting for sample deformation and present t

Mathematical modelling of the elastic properties of retina: a determination of Young's modulus.

The retina can be regarded as an elastic membrane or sheet which stretches and deforms when a force is applied to it. Isolated bovine retina was taken and a graded traction force applied to determine retinal profile as a function of force. The resulting profile can be modelled mathematically and the model then used to determine a value for the elastic constant. The value of the elastic constant obtained by this method is approximately 2 N/m. This value of the elastic constant, combined with the observed retinal thickness, yields a value of Young's modulus for retina of approximately 2 x 10(4)

Size-Dependent Elastic Modulus and Core-Shell Structural Characteristics of Electrospun Nanofibers.

This study investigates the size-dependent mechanical properties of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers by analyzing the relationship between fiber diameter and Young's modulus. Experimental data reveal a clear inverse trend: as fiber diameter decreases, stiffness increases significantly, indicating strong surface and confinement effects at the nanoscale. Two theoretical models were employed to interpret the observed behavior: a simplified core-shell model (Model 1) and an extended model (Model 2) incorporating surface tension and curvature elasticity. Both models accurately fit the

Research progress on measurement methods and clinical applications of corneal elastic modulus.

Various corneal diseases are strongly associated with corneal biomechanical characteristics, and early measurement of patients' corneal biomechanics can be utilized in their diagnosis and treatment. Measurement methods for corneal biomechanical characteristics are classified into ex vivo and in vivo. Some of these methods can directly measure certain corneal biomechanical parameters, while others require indirect calculation through alternative methods. However, due to diversities in measurement techniques and environmental conditions, significant differences may exist in the corneal mechanica

Intraoperative identification of patient-specific elastic modulus of the meniscus during arthroscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Degenerative meniscus tissue has been associated with a lower elastic modulus and can lead to the development of arthrosis. Safe intraoperative measurement of in vivo elastic modulus of the human meniscus could contribute to a better understanding of meniscus health, and for developing surgical simulators where novice surgeons can learn to distinguish healthy from degenerative meniscus tissue. Such measurement can also support intraoperative decision-making by providing a quantitative measure of the meniscus health condition. The objective of this study is to demonstr

Elastic Modulus of Osteoporotic Mouse Femur Based on Femoral Head Compression Test.

A biomechanical test is a good evaluation method that describes the structural, functional, and pathological differences in the bones, such as osteoporosis and fracture. The tensile test, compression test, and bending test are generally performed to evaluate the elastic modulus of the bone using mice. In particular, the femoral head compression test is mainly used for verifying the osteoporosis change of the femoral neck. This study conducted bone mineral density analysis using in vivo microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to observe changes in osteoporosis over time. It proposed a method of ide

"Apparent" Young's elastic modulus and radial recovery for some tableted pharmaceutical excipients.

The effects of compact size and of powder particle size on the determination of "apparent" compressive Young's modulus of elasticity, E, were evaluated, for three pharmaceutical excipients (Microcrystalline cellulose, MCC, Calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, CHPD, and pregelatinized starch, PGS) differing in deformational behaviour during compression. One- and two-compact (composite) specimens were employed and the equations of Spriggs [J. Am. Ceram. Soc. 44 (1961) 628] and Phani & Niyogi [J. Mater. Sci. 22 (1987) 257] were employed for prediction of E, at zero and 0.15 porosity (E(0) and E(

Determination of the elastic shear modulus of cultured human red blood cells.

In this study we investigated the mechanical properties of in vitro cultured red blood cells (RBCs) in a liquid system. We used human umbilical cord blood as a highly efficient source of hematopoietic stem cells (HS). Our first goal was to establish an optimal medium composition in order to yield finally differentiated RBCs, i.e. enucleated and hemoglobin-filled cells. Different stages of cell differentiation were distinguished based on morphological observations and flow cytometry measurements. By means of the micropipette aspiration technique we estimated the deformability characteristics of

Acute Effect of Active and Passive Static Stretching on Elastic Modulus of the Hamstrings.

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the acute effects of passive knee extension (PKE) and active knee extension (AKE) stretching on the shear elastic modulus of the hamstrings. In 20 healthy men, maximum knee extension (maximum range of motion [ROM]) and shear elastic modulus of the hamstrings (biceps femoris long head, semitendinosus, semimembranosus) were measured before (Pre) and after (Post) AKE and PKE stretching. The maximum ROM during stretching was measured. In both stretching methods, maximum ROM increased and the shear elastic modulus decreased (p<0.01), but n

Cell poking. Determination of the elastic area compressibility modulus of the erythrocyte membrane.

Cell poking, a new method for measuring mechanical properties of single cells was used to determine the elastic area compressibility modulus of osmotically swollen human erythrocytes. With this method we determined the force required to indent cells attached to a glass coverslip (Petersen, N.O., W. B. McConnaughey , and E. L. Elson , 1982, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 79:5327. Forces on the order of one millidyne and indentations on the order of one micron were detected. An analysis of these data in terms of a simplified mechanical model yielded the elastic area compressibility modulus. This an

On the Relation of Bone Mineral Density and the Elastic Modulus in Healthy and Pathologic Bone.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Osteoporosis could lead to the bone mechanical failure. To examine the bone health, mechanical properties are often estimated from the images of the bone density. Here, we review the relationships that have been experimentally determined between mineral density and the elastic modulus and factors that affect these relationships. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies, which have investigated the relation between the elastic modulus and bone mineral at the bulk scale, have shown that approximately 70% of variations in the elastic modulus can be explained based on the amount of mineral in
