INTRODUCTION: This study involves the results of open elbow arthrolysis performed on a series of patients having fixed joint contracture.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients were treated with open arthrolysis. Eleven patients had very severely stiff elbows (flexion arc less than 30 degrees ), five patients had severely stiff elbows (31 degrees -60 degrees ) and two patients had moderately stiff elbows (60 degrees -90 degrees ). Fixed flexion deformity was observed in nine patients preoperatively. The mean interval between the trauma and arthrolysis was 14.8 months. The mean age was 27 year

The athlete's elbow has been described as one of the last frontiers in orthopaedic sports medicine. It has been considered separately from other athletic injuries because of the unique constellation of pathology that results from repetitive overhead throwing. Tremendous gains in understanding the complex interplay between the dynamic and static stabilizers of the athlete's elbow have occurred over the past decade. The desire to treat these injuries in a minimally invasive manner has driven the development of techniques and instrumentation for elbow arthroscopy, a successful and essential techn

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate early clinical outcome after arthroscopic treatment of elbow dysfunction.
METHODS: From September 2007 to December 2009, 21 patients with elbow dysfunction were treated with an arthroscopic procedure. All patients had chronic history of elbow dysfunction. Extension lag was 18.2° (10° - 25°) combined with pain. All patients underwent five-portals arthroscopic release and debridement. Postoperative care including anti-infection, rehabilitation and prophylaxis of myositis ossificans were prescribed. All elbows were assessed for increase in ROM and Mayo assessment before an

Elbow disorders in the athletic population comprise a wide range of injuries from acute trauma to those caused by chronic overuse of the joint. Certain injuries are orthopedic emergencies that must be recognized immediately by the team physician to avoid potential complications. Other overuse injuries need to be accurately diagnosed and treated so further injury can be prevented and the athlete can return to competition as expediently as possible. Finally, the decision to refer an athlete for surgical treatment often rests with the team physician; only with an adequate understanding of the elb

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic contracture is a common complication after elbow trauma. If conservative therapy fails to restore adequate elbow motion, arthrolysis is indicated. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the clinical outcome of open arthrolysis for post-traumatic elbow contracture and to determine factors influencing the outcome.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with post-traumatic elbow contracture were followed-up after open arthrolysis for at least 12 months. Before surgery, the mean limitation in extension was 30 and the mean maximum flexion was 83 degrees. A posterior surgica

BACKGROUND: A mechanical block in the elbow due to osteophytes in the olecranon fossa is a common clinical symptom for elbow stiffness.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to understand the biomechanical characteristics or changes in the stiff elbow in the resting (or neutral) and swing position of the arm using a cadaveric model. The hypotheses included the following: (1) a difference exists in the articular contact pressure of the elbow by comparing the non-stiff and stiff models in in vivo studies; (2) the degree of stiffness would affect the increase of the joint loading of the elbow.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The elbow is a highly constrained synovial hinge joint that frequently becomes stiff after injury. Grade 4 elbow stiffness (ankylosis) is a strongly limiting factor in the patient s daily activities and is difficult to treat. Hinged external fixation of the elbow provides the advantages of static fixation with the benefits of continued motion of the joint. The goal of our study was to assess the improvement in the range of motion of the elbow after surgical arthrolysis using a posterior extensile approach to the joint with or without using external fixation. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
INTRODUCTION: A new method of accurately assessing the compromised elbow's proprioception was developed for this postsurgical population using information from previous neurophysiologic proprioception studies of healthy elbows.
HYPOTHESIS: This retrospective cohort study investigated the patterns and the degree of proprioceptive impairment and recovery following arthroscopic surgery for chronic lateral epicondylitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Participants had undergone arthroscopic elbow surgery two years prior to this study (n=15). Healthy, non-injured

A 44-year-old patient was treated with elbow arthrodesis at a position of 90° due to primary osteoarthritis. Seven years later he was introduced to us due to progressive pain of both elbows. Although the arthrodesis had consolidated uneventfully, the patient felt massive restrictions due to eliminated extension/flexion and persistent pain. The right elbow developed primary osteoarthritis likewise. We performed arthroscopic debridement and arthrolysis of the right elbow. After a recovery phase of 2 months we converted the arthrodesis of the left elbow to total elbow arthroplasty. Three months l

Palvanen et al in 2003 collected data on osteoporotic fractures of the distal humerus fractures from the Finnish National Hospital Discharge Register. They defined an osteoporotic fracture of the distal humerus as a fracture occurring in persons 60 years of age or older following moderate or minimal trauma. The annual rate of incidence of these types of fractures has increased significantly, with 42 fractures reported in 1970 and 208 fractures in 2000(395% increase). The age-specific incidence rates showed a ninefold increase for women 80 years of age or older (8 in 1970 versus 75 in 2000). In

Primary osteoarthritis of the elbow is an infrequent condition typically managed by some form of debridement. There is no comment in the literature regarding prosthetic replacement for this condition. We report 5 patients (mean age, 68), with a minimum assessment of 3 years (range, 37-125 years) after total elbow arthroplasty. Complications in 4 patients included subluxation, fracture of a humeral component with particulate synovitis, heterotopic ossification, recurrent osteophyte formation, and transient ulnar neuropathy. Although revision was required in 2 of the 5, currently all experience

Elbow arthroplasty is a rare treatment option and is primarily used to treat distal humeral fractures that are not amenable to open reduction and internal fixation, as well as degenerative and inflammatory arthritis. In Denmark, treatment has been centralised since 2008 to three specialised university hospitals to ensure a high quality of treatment. Elbow arthroplasty generally yields good functional and patient-reported outcomes, but with high rates of revision and complications. The current literature remains limited, particularly in terms of long-term outcomes.

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is characterized by pain at the origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ERCB) muscle from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. A connection was found between tennis elbow and repetitive load in this area. In patients who suffer from elbow pain, tennis elbow is the most common cause, affecting 1-3% of the adult population each year. The diagnosis of tennis elbow is mainly clinical, based on medical history and physical examination. There are several possible treatments ranging from anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy to various local injections

The elbow joint consists of the humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar joints. Elbow stability is maintained by a combination of static and dynamic constraints. Elbow fractures are challenging to treat because the articular surfaces must be restored perfectly and associated soft tissue injuries must be recognized and appropriately managed. Most elbow fractures are best treated operatively with restoration of normal bony anatomy and rigid internal fixation and repair and/or reconstruction of the collateral ligaments. Advanced imaging, improved understanding of the complex anatomy of

Overuse injuries of the lateral and medial elbow are common in sport, recreational activities, and occupational endeavors. They are commonly diagnosed as lateral and medial epicondylitis; however, the pathophysiology of these disorders demonstrates a lack of inflammation. Instead, angiofibroblastic degeneration is present, referred to as tendinosis. As such, a more appropriate terminology for these conditions is epicondylosis. This is a clinical diagnosis, and further investigations are only performed to rule out other clinical entities after conventional therapy has failed. Yet, most patients
