Elbow tendinopathy.

Overuse injuries of the lateral and medial elbow are common in sport, recreational activities, and occupational endeavors. They are commonly diagnosed as lateral and medial epicondylitis; however, the pathophysiology of these disorders demonstrates a lack of inflammation. Instead, angiofibroblastic degeneration is present, referred to as tendinosis. As such, a more appropriate terminology for these conditions is epicondylosis. This is a clinical diagnosis, and further investigations are only performed to rule out other clinical entities after conventional therapy has failed. Yet, most patients

[Elbow tendinopathy].

The lateral and medial epicondylitis is often manifested in a professional or in a sport context leading to repetitive wrist movements. The diagnosis is primarily clinical. Additional tests are indicated in chronic evolution and in searching for differential diagnoses. Elbow X-ray can be completed with ultrasound or MRI, the most efficient but expensive diagnostic procedure. There is no consensus on treatment. After a period of rest, stretching then strengthening exercises are recommended. Corticosteroid injections may provide a short-term beneficial effect. Platelet-Rich Plasma injections hav

[Tendinopathies of the shoulder and elbow].

BACKGROUND: Tendinopathies of the shoulder and elbow joint are a common problem. According to the current state of knowledge tendinopathies can be separated into acute and chronic tendinitis as well as degenerative tendinosis. ORIGIN: The causes of tendinopathy can be intrinsic, extrinsic or a combination of both. A false straining or overuse with repetitive microtrauma is often the cause. Particularly affected are tendons of the rotator cuff, the long biceps tendons and lower arm extensors. TREATMENT: Priority is given to conservative appproaches for these disease processes. Following appro

Evaluation and management of elbow tendinopathy.

CONTEXT: Elbow tendinopathy is a common cause of pain and disability among patients presenting to orthopaedic surgeons, primary care physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of these conditions facilitates a directed treatment regimen. A thorough understanding of the natural history of these injuries and treatment outcomes will enable the appropriate management of patients and their expectations. EVIDENCE ACQUISITIONS: The PubMed database was searched in December 2011 for English-language articles pertaining to elbow tendinopathy. RESULTS: Epidemi

Acute and chronic tendinopathies at the elbow.

Chronic elbow tendinitis (medial or lateral epicondylitis and triceps tendinitis) are common disorders that, overall, have a good prognosis but, even with optimum management, require a minimum of 3 to 6 months to resolve. Patient education, activity modification, splinting, and corticosteroid injections each serve a role in symptom resolution; surgery is required in less than 10% of cases and has a similarly long period (3 to 6 months) of recovery. Acute tendon injuries (biceps and triceps ruptures) require early (< 4 weeks) surgical repair but may be misdiagnosed, thus delaying management and

Tendinitis and Tendinopathies About the Elbow and Forearm.

Lateral epicondylitis, de Quervain tenosynovitis, and trigger finger are among the most common tendinopathies of the upper extremity. Lateral epicondylitis is a common condition that can be very frustrating to patients. Many patients will improve without any acute interventions. Physical therapy has been shown to be helpful as initial treatment, and surgery can be helpful for persistent symptoms. de Quervain tenosynovitis similarly responds well to nonsurgical modalities, including brace treatment and injections, and surgery can be effective for recalcitrant cases. Finally, trigger finger is a

Lateral elbow tendinopathy: Evidence of physiotherapy management.

Lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET) is a common musculoskeletal/sports injury. A plethora of physiotherapy techniques has been proposed in the management of LET. The exercise programme is the most common treatment in the management of LET. The optimal protocol of exercise programme is still unknown. The effectiveness of the exercise programme is low when it is applied as monotherapy. Therefore, exercise programme is combined with other physiotherapy modalities such as soft tissue techniques, external support, acupuncture, manual therapy and electrotherapy, in the treatment of LET. Future research

Compressive neuropathies and tendinopathies in the athletic elbow and wrist.

Overuse syndromes of the upper extremity in the athletic population are a common and often difficult problem for physician and patient alike. Optimal function of the upper extremity is tied intimately to success in many sporting activities. Correct diagnosis and proper care require a thorough knowledge of the pertinent anatomy, pathophysiology, and pathomechanics involved in each disorder. Conservative care with rest, activity modification, and medication is adequate for most athletic injuries. Surgical intervention may be indicated for continuing pain, decreased performance, or to prevent chr

Reliability of sonographic assessment of tendinopathy in tennis elbow.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the reliability and compute the minimum detectable change using sonographic scales to quantify the extent of pathology and hyperaemia in the common extensor tendon in people with tennis elbow. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The lateral elbows of 19 people with tennis elbow were assessed sonographically twice, 1-2 weeks apart. Greyscale and power Doppler images were recorded for subsequent rating of abnormalities. Tendon thickening, hypoechogenicity, fibrillar disruption and calcification were each rated on four-point scales, and scores were summed to provide an overall rating of

Lateral elbow tendinopathy: surgery versus extracorporeal shock wave therapy.

Lateral elbow pain caused by tendinopathy - tendinosis - or tennis elbow is a highly prevalent problem. Unfortunately, no treatment method can guarantee clinical success. Inspired by the lithotripsy technique used for kidney stones, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been introduced as an alternative to surgical treatment 25 years ago. In a randomized prospective study, we compared 15 patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy who were operated and 14 who underwent ESWT. Almost all patients had good or excellent outcomes according to the criteria by Verhaar. Subjective improvement was

A COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION PROGRAM FOR TREATING LATERAL ELBOW TENDINOPATHY.

UNLABELLED: Scapular muscle weakness in patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy is an identified impairment and is part of a multimodal rehabilitation approach. The published literature provides little information regarding specific rehabilitation guidelines that address both the proximal scapular muscle weakness and local elbow/wrist dysfunctions common in patients with lateral elbow tendinopathy. The purpose of this clinical commentary is to describe a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy for individuals with lateral elbow tendinopathy. This program emphasizes a phased therapeutic strategy

Exploring the knowledge base of ChatGPT in lateral elbow tendinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Large language models are a type of artificial intelligence that can understand language and generate responses to text inputs. This presents potential within healthcare to improve triage of common conditions with established care pathways, such as lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET). However, its application to clinical scenarios requires evaluation. METHODS: Four questions regarding LET investigation and management were posed to ChatGPT-3.5, which was asked to provide five evidence sources. Five clinical scenarios were posed to the model, simulating consultations with typical and r

Repetitive shock wave therapy for lateral elbow tendinopathy (tennis elbow): a systematic and qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Pooled meta-analyses of statistically and clinically heterogeneous data of randomised-controlled studies are difficult to interpret. Therefore, a qualitative study-by-study assessment was thought to be of greater relevance, to physicians confronted with a therapy-resistant tennis elbow patient, to determine the effectiveness of shock wave therapy (SWT) for lateral elbow tendinopathy. SETTING: Orthopaedic clinic. METHODS: Randomized trials were identified from a current search of The Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group specialized register of trials, the Cochrane Central R

Elbow tendinopathy and tendon ruptures: epicondylitis, biceps and triceps ruptures.

Lateral and medial epicondylitis are common causes of elbow pain in the general population, with the lateral variety being more common than the medial by a ratio reportedly ranging from 4:1 to 7:1. Initially thought to be an inflammatory condition, epicondylitis has ultimately been shown to result from tendinous microtearing followed by an incomplete reparative response. Numerous nonoperative and operative treatment options have been employed in the treatment of epicondylitis, without the emergence of a single, consistent, universally accepted treatment protocol. Tendon ruptures about the elbo

INTRODUCTION: Acute capsular injuries of the elbow joint and its ligaments predominantly occur after joint dislocation or subluxation. Together with lateral and medial epicondylitis they represent a common injury pattern in radiology, orthopedic and trauma surgery. CLINICAL ISSUE: Because of the complexity of the elbow joint, knowledge of the elbow dislocation and injury pattern as well as the anatomy is essential in order to adequately estimate the injury severity and joint stability. This is crucial for the correct diagnosis and choice of treatment. Systematic physical examination and caref
