[Evaluating elective surgical procedures in ulcer surgery].

Elective surgical treatment of peptic ulcers is less important after the introduction of effective conservative treatment. However, in a chronic recurrent disease all options of treatment have a place. In duodenal ulcer highly selective vagotomy is the procedure of choice despite the high recurrence rate, since it has a low operative risk and a low rate of early postoperative morbidity or late sequelae. In gastric ulcer distal partial gastrectomy (Billroth I) must be recommended using the same criteria. Laparoscopic techniques will not alter the indication for surgery; these procedures are sti

Outcomes of simultaneous liver transplantation and elective cardiac surgical procedures.

BACKGROUND: Many centers are reticent to list patients for liver transplantation until coexistent cardiac disease is surgically corrected. Previous studies have documented considerable morbidity and mortality in liver failure patients undergoing cardiac operations. This study examined whether elective cardiac operations at the time of hepatic transplantation would yield enhanced outcomes. METHODS: Between July 1999 and June 2010, 10 patients underwent simultaneous liver transplantation and elective cardiac operations at a single institution. Postoperative outcomes were analyzed using a prospe

Resuming elective paediatric surgical procedures in the era of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus and the disease it causes COVID-19, like other viral outbreaks, have an unpredictable timeline. Therefore, a triumph in the battle against COVID-19 could only be achieved if a health care system's capacity to support a potentially overwhelming increase in critical patient care needs is maintained, and the viral curve is flattened. Accordingly, health care bodies around the globe called upon prioritising appropriate resource allocation as it relates to elective invasive procedures and minimising the use of essential items required to care for patients. The unpr

Maximum surgical blood ordering schedule for elective surgical procedures in Omdurman teaching hospital, Sudan.

BACKGROUND: The need for blood during a surgical procedure is greater than what blood banks are able to provide. There is an excessive amount of blood being ordered for elective surgeries, surpassing the actual requirements. Only 30% of the cross matched blood is actually used in these surgeries. The accuracy of estimating the transfusion needs before a surgical procedure can be determined by looking at the cross match to transfusion ratio and the transfusion index. "These indicators play a crucial role in developing the maximum surgical blood ordering schedule; in this study, these indicators

Preoperative Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Elective Minor Surgical Procedures among Adults in Southern Italy.

Little is known regarding the factors associated with surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) compliance in elective minor surgery. The purposes of this cross-sectional study were to identify the frequency of inappropriate SAP administration and to understand the characteristics associated with such inappropriateness in a sample of elective minor surgical procedures. The study was performed between May and July 2019 among a random sample of patients aged 18 years and older in seven public hospitals randomly selected in the Campania and Calabria Regions of Italy. Globally, only 45% of SAP approac

Elective dental extractions and osseointegrated implant replacement to facilitate transoral endoscopic ENT surgical procedures.

BACKGROUND: Transoral endoscopic ENT surgical procedures are a mainstay of treatment for a variety of conditions and are often preferable to open surgery where possible. Cases of micrognathia, prominent incisor teeth or trismus may create difficulties in gaining sufficient access to undertake such procedures. Extraction of the anterior maxillary teeth can help overcome these problems in appropriate cases, with subsequent prosthetic tooth replacement supported by dental implants. To date, this approach has not been reported in the literature. CASE REPORTS: This paper reports on two cases which

Pulmonary Complications After Cardiac Surgical Procedures: A Tertiary Centre Audit of Elective and Urgent Cases.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate time for preoperative optimization can lead to adverse outcomes after urgent cardiac surgical procedures. In this audit, we compared the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) and other adverse outcomes after elective and urgent cardiac surgical procedures. METHODS: Adult patients who underwent nonemergency open heart surgical procedures were included. PPCs were defined as a composite of atelectasis, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, respiratory failure, and pulmonary aspiration. Logistic regression analysis identified factors associated

Evaluating factors associated with the cancellation and delay of elective surgical procedures: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Elective surgery cancellation is considered a fundamental problem in health care services-it causes considerable disruption to patient flow, further eroding often already stretched operating capacity, and consequentially reduces both hospital performance and patient satisfaction. This research presents a systematic review (SR) of the reasons for surgery cancellation among different hospitals and countries. By highlighting these causes, we identify how to reduce cancellations, thereby improving the use of surgical capacity and resources and creating a more predicable patient flow.

Carriers of COL3A1 pathogenic variants in Denmark: Interfamilial variability in severity and outcome of elective surgical procedures.

The study describes all patients in Denmark with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS). Carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic COL3A1 variants were retrospectively identified through registries and specialized clinics. Medical records were reviewed for vascular- or organ ruptures and invasive procedures performed. Identified families were divided by variant type (null, splice, and missense) and familial phenotypes (severe or attenuated). Families in which at least one carrier has suffered a major event before the age of 30 were classified as severe, whereas families in which at least thr
