An Electrical Capacitance Tomography Dataset for Image Reconstruction Benchmarking.

We introduce ECT-Bench, the first large-scale, experimentally acquired dataset for planar Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) designed to evaluate both imaging and dynamic tracking algorithms. The dataset contains 54,739 high-resolution mutual capacitance matrices acquired via a custom 3 × 3 electrode array. Taking advantage of a unified robotic pipeline, data was collected under comprehensive spatial variables, covering contact and multi-distance non-contact conditions (Z-axis permutations), alongside continuous spatio-temporal trajectories. Three representative materials (glass, resin, w

Infrared light excites cells by changing their electrical capacitance.

Optical stimulation has enabled important advances in the study of brain function and other biological processes, and holds promise for medical applications ranging from hearing restoration to cardiac pace making. In particular, pulsed laser stimulation using infrared wavelengths >1.5 μm has therapeutic potential based on its ability to directly stimulate nerves and muscles without any genetic or chemical pre-treatment. However, the mechanism of infrared stimulation has been a mystery, hindering its path to the clinic. Here we show that infrared light excites cells through a novel, highly gene

Electrical measurement of a high-frequency, high-capacitance piezoceramic resonator with resistive electrodes.

In a thin and large area PZT-ceramics piezoresonator (PR) with relatively low resonance impedance, caused by high-frequency resonance and high PR capacitance, the effect of electrode resistivity and parasitic resistive and inductive elements in the measurement fixture results in significant distortion of the measured thickness-mode (longitudinal TL, shear TS) resonance response-resonance frequency shifts and characteristics deformation. This distortion may not allow the precise measurement of the PR characteristic frequencies, quality factor, and electromechanical coupling coefficient so essen

Effect of capacitively coupled electric fields on an experimental model of delayed union of fracture.

To evaluate the effect of capacitively coupled electric fields (CCEF) on delayed union of fractures, an experimental model of delayed union was produced in the radius of rabbits, and the process of healing was investigated by radiography, bone mineral density (BMD) measured with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, and histological survey. It was confirmed radiographically and histologically that callus formation was enhanced in the group treated with CCEF. After stimulation, the average BMD increased more than 18% compared with the controls. Our experiment on a delayed union model suggests that

Treatment of recalcitrant non-union with a capacitively coupled electrical field. A preliminary report.

Twenty-two well established non-unions in twenty patients were treated with a capacitively coupled electrical signal (sine wave, sixty kilohertz, five volts peak to peak) that was applied non-invasively through stainless-steel capacitor plates placed on the skin surface overlying the approximate site of the non-union. The average age of the eleven female and nine male patients in this series was 38.4 years, and the average duration of the twenty-two non-unions was 3.3 years. Seventeen of the non-unions were labeled recalcitrant, meaning that they had failed to heal after either previous bone-g

Effect of simple cubic, face-centered cubic, and body-centered cubic-electrodes on the electric double layer capacitance of supercapacitors.

The continuum theory has been used to analyze the polarization, ion crowding, and electrostatic forces of the electric double layer in the electrode materials having simple cubic (SC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and face-centered cubic (FCC) morphologies. The study manifests the effect of thickness of electrodes, electrode's particle size, and porosity on electric double-layer specific capacitance (EDLC). Electrochemical interference and the specific capacitance depend on the packing factor. The larger particle size decreases the specific capacitance, but porosity increases due to more surface

Bioelectronic osteosynthesis plate to monitor the fracture bone healing using electric capacitive variations.

BACKGROUND: Bone fractures represent a global public health issue. Over the past few decades, a sustained increase in the number of incidents and prevalent cases have been reported, as well as in the years lived with disability. Current monitoring techniques predominantly rely on imaging methods, which can result in subjective assessments, and expose patients to unnecessary cumulative doses of radiation. Besides, they are costly and incapable of providing continuous daily detection of fracture healing stages. Technological advances are still required to design fixation systems with the ability

Capacitively coupled electric field for pain relief in patients with vertebral fractures and chronic pain.

UNLABELLED: Fragility vertebral fractures often are associated with chronic back pain controlled by analgesic compounds. Capacitive coupling electrical stimulation is a type of electrical stimulation technology approved by the US FDA to noninvasively enhance fracture repair and spinal fusion. These uses suggest it would be a possible treatment for patients with back pain attributable to vertebral fractures. We therefore randomized 51 postmenopausal women with multiple fractures and chronic pain to the use of one of two indistinguishable devices delivering either the standard capacitive couplin

Capacitively Coupled Alternating Electric Field for Accelerated and General Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks.

The conventional synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is often time-consuming and energy-intensive, which has become a bottleneck restricting their practical applications. Herein, we report a novel strategy utilizing a capacitively coupled alternating electric field (CCAEF) to accelerate MOF synthesis. The CCAEF could activate the precursor solution and lower the nucleation energy barrier, thereby facilitating the rapid formation of MOF materials. Using UiO-66 as a model, rapid synthesis was achieved within 25 min under relatively mild conditions, and the obtained material exhibited cr

Capacitively coupled electrical field in the treatment of a leg fracture after total knee replacement.

Electrical stimulation has been used as treatment for nonunions of fractures since the early 1950s, with a reported success rate of 80-85%. We report a case of nonunion of a tibial fracture below a revised total knee prosthesis treated with a capacitively coupled electrical field. After 3 months of treatment, consolidation of this difficult fracture was evident with abundant callus formation.

Reduction in excitability of the auditory nerve following acute electrical stimulation at high stimulus rates: III. Capacitive versus non-capacitive coupling of the stimulating electrodes.

Safe electrical stimulation of neural tissue is typically achieved using charge-balanced biphasic current pulses, which are designed to minimize the generation of direct current (DC) and the production of harmful electrochemical products. However, due to the kinetics of the charge injection process, neural stimulators must also use capacitive coupling or electrode shorting techniques, to ensure DC levels are minimal. Previous studies have reported a reduction in excitability of the auditory nerve following acute simulation at high rates and intensities. Elevated levels of DC were reported in t

Direct and capacitive electrical stimulation shapes neural progenitor cell survival and orientation on conductive scaffolds.

Electrical stimulation (ES) of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) on conductive biomaterials offers a promising strategy to enhance regenerative therapies for neurological disorders. In this study, we designed and evaluated two ES platforms, direct and capacitively coupled, using silver nanowire-integrated collagen scaffolds to investigate their effects on NPC orientation and viability. Direct stimulation promoted NPC alignment along the electric field, suggesting enhanced guidance potential for neural repair. In contrast, the capacitively coupled system did not alter cell morphology but improved
