Electric fish measure distance in the dark.

Distance determination in animals can be achieved by visual or non-visual cues. Weakly electric fish use active electrolocation for orientation in the dark. By perceiving self-produced electric signals with epidermal electroreceptors, fish can detect, locate and analyse nearby objects. Distance discrimination, however, was thought to be hardly possible because it was assumed that confusing ambiguity could arise with objects of unknown sizes and materials. Here we show that during electrolocation electric fish can measure the distance of most objects accurately, independently of size, shape and

Hormonal modulation of communication signals in electric fish.

Steroid hormones have profound effects on vertebrate behaviors. Yet, in most cases we can neither identify the neurons responsible for particular behaviors nor how steroids alter their excitability. Electric fish emit sexually dimorphic electric organ discharges (EODs) the waveform of which may be altered by steroid treatment. These communication signals are generated by a medullary pacemaker nucleus (PMN) composed of two cell types. The output neurons of the PMN synapse on spinal cord electromotoneurons which then innervate the electric organ. The PMN receives input from only two sources, and

Electric signaling behavior and the mechanisms of electric organ discharge production in mormyrid fish.

Mormyrid fish communicate and navigate using electric organ discharges (EODs). The EOD is highly stereotyped and provides information on sender identity, including species, sex, reproductive condition, and possibly relative status and individual identity. By contrast, the sequence of pulse intervals (SPI) is variable and plays more of a role in signaling behavioral states. Various types of SPI displays may be produced, including tonic patterns such as 'random' and 'regularized', and phasic patterns such as 'bursts' and cessations'. Certain displays have been linked to specific behaviors such a

An atlas of the brain of the electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

This atlas consists of a set of six macrophotographs illustrating the important external landmarks of the apteronotid brain, as well as 54 transverse levels through the brain stained with cresyl violet. There are 150 microns between levels and the scales have 1 mm divisions (100 microns small divisions). In general the neuroanatomy of this brain is similar to that of other teleosts except that all parts known to be concerned with electroreception are greatly hypertrophied (electrosensory lateral line lobe, nucleus praeminentialis, caudal lobe of the cerebellum, torus semicircularis dorsalis, o

Electrical burns in sports fishing: a case report.

Electrical burns are among the most devastating types of burns, with wide-ranging injuries. They can sometimes occur in the context of fishing, usually involving high voltages. The authors present the case of a 59-year-old-man who suffered a sports accident during a fishing competition, with the formation of an electrical arc due to proximity of the fishing rod and high voltage cables. He presented burns affecting 3% of TBSA, third degree deep burns on trunk and left hand; no signs of cardiac injury. He was admitted to our Burn Unit for monitoring, care dressing and surgical treatment; complet

Sonic and electric fish: at the crossroads of neuroethology and behavioral neuroendocrinology.

Field and laboratory studies of weakly electric and sound-producing teleost fishes demonstrate how steroidal and non-steroidal hormones mediate the translation of neural events into behavior. The development of this research program has depended upon an interdisciplinary neuroethological approach that has characterized the neurophysiological properties of the motor and sensory pathways that lead to the production and detection of easily quantified highly stereotyped behaviors, namely, electric organ discharges (EODs) and vocalizations. Neuroethological studies of these teleosts have now integr

Signal Diversification Is Associated with Corollary Discharge Evolution in Weakly Electric Fish.

Communication signal diversification is a driving force in the evolution of sensory and motor systems. However, little is known about the evolution of sensorimotor integration. Mormyrid fishes generate stereotyped electric pulses (electric organ discharge [EOD]) for communication and active sensing. The EOD has diversified extensively, especially in duration, which varies across species from 0.1 to >10 ms. In the electrosensory hindbrain, a corollary discharge that signals the timing of EOD production provides brief, precisely timed inhibition that effectively blocks responses to self-generate

Effects of restraint and immobilization on electrosensory behaviors of weakly electric fish.

Weakly electric fishes have been an important model system in behavioral neuroscience for more than 40 years. These fishes use a specialized electric organ to produce an electric field that is typically below 1 volt/cm and serves in many behaviors including social communication and prey detection. Electrical behaviors are easy to study because inexpensive and widely available tools enable continuous monitoring of the electric field of individual or groups of interacting fish. Weakly electric fish have been routinely used in tightly controlled neurophysiological experiments in which the animal

Figure-ground separation during active electrolocation in the weakly electric fish, Gnathonemus petersii.

The weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii uses active electrolocation to detect and discriminate between objects in its environment. Objects are recognised by analysing the electric images, which they project onto the fish's skin. In this study, we determined whether different types of large backgrounds interfere with the fishes' ability to discriminate between objects. Fish were trained in a food-rewarded two-alternative forced-choice procedure to discriminate between two objects. In subsequent tests, structured and non-structured as well as stationary and moving backgrounds were position

Locomotor and electric displays associated with electrolocation during exploratory behavior in mormyrid fish.

In the presence of a novel stimulus such as an aluminum or a plastic rod mormyrid fish (Marcusenius cyprinoides and Gnathonemus petersii) exhibit characteristic motor probing acts (PMAs): 'chin probing', 'radial' and 'lateral va-et-vient', 'lateral probing', 'tangential probing', and 'stationary probing'. During the display of these PMAs the fish maintain characteristic probing distances from the object which were 4.5 cm for the metal and 2.5-3.7 cm for the plastic stimulus. G. petersii with their electric organ rendered inoperative ('silent fish') no longer exhibited 'radial' and 'lateral va-

Multiple cases of striking genetic similarity between alternate electric fish signal morphs in sympatry.

Striking trait polymorphisms are worthy of study in natural populations because they can often shed light on processes of phenotypic divergence and specialization, adaptive evolution, and (in some cases) the early stages of speciation. We examined patterns of genetic variation within and between populations of mormyrid fishes that are morphologically cryptic in sympatry but produce alternate types of electric organ discharge (EOD). Other species in a large group containing a clade of these morphologically cryptic EOD types produce stereotyped, species-typical EOD waveforms thought to function

Central coordination of electromotor and locomotor pathways in the weakly electric fish Brevimyrus niger.

Coordinating multiple motor outputs is essential for active sensing. Mormyrid weakly electric fish generate electric organ discharges (EODs) while swimming, providing a tractable system for studying central mechanisms of motor coordination. The optic tectum (OT), homolog of the mammalian superior colliculus (SC), is a conserved sensorimotor center that regulates orienting behaviors and is reciprocally connected with the central electromotor network in mormyrid fish. Further, stimulation of the OT can elicit fictive swimming. However, whether the OT coordinates locomotor and electromotor output

Improvement of Electric Fish Optimization Algorithm for Standstill Label Combined with Levy Flight Strategy.

The Electric Fish Optimization (EFO) algorithm is inspired by the predation behavior and communication of weak electric fish. It is a novel meta-heuristic algorithm that attracts researchers because it has few tunable parameters, high robustness, and strong global search capabilities. Nevertheless, when operating in complex environments, the EFO algorithm encounters several challenges including premature convergence, susceptibility to local optima, and issues related to passive electric field localization stagnation. To address these challenges, this study introduces Adaptive Electric Fish Opt

An internal model for canceling self-generated sensory input in freely behaving electric fish.

Internal models that predict the sensory consequences of motor actions are vital for sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. However, the relationship between motor action and sensory input is complex, often varying from one moment to another depending on the state of the animal and the environment. The neural mechanisms for generating predictions under such challenging, real-world conditions remain largely unknown. Using novel methods for underwater neural recording, a quantitative analysis of unconstrained behavior, and computational modeling, we provide evidence for an unexpectedly sophist

Parasitism by Clinostomum marginatum (Clinostomidae) in neotropical electric fish (Gymnotiformes) in the Brazilian Amazon.

Gymnotiformes are currently recognized as electric fish, the vast majority of which emit low power electrical discharges. Clinostomum trematodes have been the subject of numerous investigations in several host species due to the ability of metacercariae of this genus to infect the muscles, fins and internal organs of fish. The present study aimed to record, for the first time, the occurrence of parasitism by Clinostomum marginatum in Gymnotiformes from the natural environments of two tributaries of the Amazon River in the Brazilian Amazon. Two specimens of Gymnotus coropinae, ten specimens of

Pathways of the electric organ discharge command and its corollary discharges in mormyrid fish.

The motoneurons which innervate the mormyrid electric organ are driven by a descending volley from the medullary relay nucleus. This nucleus does not initiate the electric organ discharge (EOD) but is driven in an obligatory manner by another center, a command nucleus. One goal of the present study was to identify this command nucleus anatomically. A second goal was to determine the pathways by which corollary discharges of the EOD motor command exert their effects on sensory input to the electroreceptive lateral line lobe. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the medullary relay nuc

Multiplexed temporal coding of electric communication signals in mormyrid fishes.

The coding of stimulus information into patterns of spike times occurs widely in sensory systems. Determining how temporally coded information is decoded by central neurons is essential to understanding how brains process sensory stimuli. Mormyrid weakly electric fishes are experts at time coding, making them an exemplary organism for addressing this question. Mormyrids generate brief, stereotyped electric pulses. Pulse waveform carries information about sender identity, and it is encoded into submillisecond-to-millisecond differences in spike timing between receptors. Mormyrids vary the time

Sensory Specializations of Mormyrid Fish Are Associated with Species Differences in Electric Signal Localization Behavior.

The ability to localize communication signals plays a fundamental role in social interactions. For signal localization to take place, the sensory system of the receiver must extract information about distance and direction to the sender from physical characteristics of the signal. In many sensory systems, information from multiple peripheral receptors must be integrated by central sensory pathways to determine the sender location. Here, we asked whether evolutionary divergence in the electrosensory and visual systems of mormyrid fish is associated with signal localization behavior. In mormyrid
