Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a symptom control method for inoperable or exulcerating cutaneous metastases or skin cancer. With the help of electroporation, an enhancement of the efficacy of the administered chemotherapeutic agent, bleomycin or cisplatin, is achieved, which leads to a local reduction of the metastases and thereby has a low impact on the systemic health.ECT can be performed under local, regional or general anaesthesia, whereby the form of anaesthesia depends on the number and extent of the metastases as well as the affected body site. For general anaesthesia, there are some spec

UNLABELLED: Electrochemotherapy is an effective treatment of cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases in patients with malignant melanoma. During the treatment, electric pulses are applied to tumor nodules to deliver non-permeating or poorly permeating chemotherapeutic agents into the cells thereby increasing local cytotoxicity of anticancer drugs.
METHODS: In 7 patients 81 cutaneous and subcutaneous melanoma metastases were treated with electrochemotherapy. All treatments were performed under general anesthesia using intravenous bleomycin injection. Median follow-up was 218 days.
RESULTS: Comp

PURPOSE: The aim of this review article is to provide a concise overview of the pre-clinical development of electrochemotherapy (ECT), its present utility in clinical practice and to examine its potential application to therapeutic modalities in the future.
RESULTS: Results from the ESOPE trial demonstrate an 85% objective response rate (ORR) in solid cutaneous and subcutaneous tumours of varying histologies, that would previously have been recalcitrant to conventional therapies. Experimentally, neoadjuvant immunogene therapy of primary cancers has been found to be effective against minimal r

The ELECHTRA (ELEctroChemoTherapy vulvaR cAncer) project was conceived to collect data on palliative electrochemotherapy (ECT) in vulvar cancer (VC) assessing patients' outcomes (response and survival) and impact on quality of life (QoL). After reporting outcome data in 2019, here, we present the results on QoL. A multicenter prospective observational study was conducted on patients with VC refractory or not amenable to standard therapies undergoing palliative ECT as per clinical practice. The following questionnaires were administered before and after ECT (two and four months later, early and

BACKGROUND: Canine prostatic carcinoma (PC) is an uncommon neoplasia characterized by aggressive biological behavior. Treatment options include surgery (partial or total prostatectomy), radiation therapy (RT), and medical treatment [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), chemotherapy, or tyrosine kinase inhibitors]. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a local treatment modality increasingly used in human and veterinary oncology.
AIM: This retrospective multi-institutional study aimed to assess the safety, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of ECT as a treatment for canine PC.
METHODS: D

Generalized eruptive keratoacanthoma, is considered a serious condition because the eruptions are diffuse, persistent, and recurrent. Constant pruritus, visceral neoplasms, and unsatisfactory response to treatment are ominous prognostic factors. Even if skin cancers are usually well controlled with surgical and/or radiotherapic approaches, there are some cases in which these two techniques are not effective. With respect to surgery, radiotherapy and other standard treatments, ECT acts rapidly on multiple lesions with limited side effects and no functional impairment; moreover, repeated session

Eight patients with 29 lesions of histologically verified 1st stage of Mycosis fungoides were successfully treated by electrochemotherapy with interferon-alpha. For this purpose 8 biphasic pulses were used, each of 50+50 micros duration with 900 micros interpulse intervals, resulting in a burst of 7.1 ms total duration. Compared to the traditional monoimmunotherapy with interferon-alpha applied three times weekly for a total of 4 weeks, the electrochemotherapy was very efficient. Complete response (CR) was observed in 25 (86%) of the 29 treated lesions by single-act electrochemotherapy with in

Electrochemotherapy is a new anticancer therapy in which transient permeabilization of cells by an electric field induces a significant increase in the bleomycin concentration and toxicity in tumour cells. We report a clinical study of electrochemotherapy in malignant melanoma. The main issues addressed were the effect of the size of the nodules, the optimization of the electrical parameters, and posttreatment clinical observations. Four patients were enrolled in the study. They received a 10 mg/m2 dose of bleomycin administered intravenously, followed by short, intense electric pulses applied

Chest wall breast cancer recurrence after mastectomy is a disease difficult to treat. Its incidence varies between 5% and 30% in different subset of patients. When possible, radical surgical therapy represents the main treatment approach, however when the disease progresses and/or treatments are not successful, ulceration, bleeding, lymphedema and psychological distress of progressive disease significantly decrease the quality of the remaining life of a patient. When surgical excision of chest wall recurrence is not possible, other local treatments such as radiotherapy, radiotherapy with hyper

Electrochemotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment based on the principle of reversible electroporation of target cells in pathologic tissues in order to increase the local effect of chemotherapeutic agents. The mechanism of action relies on temporarily increasing cell permeability to increase the uptake of cytotoxic drugs in the intracellular space. Originally developed for the treatment of cutaneous malignancies, electrochemotherapy has significantly evolved over the past few decades, thanks to advancements in electrode design and image guidance, finding fertile ground in musculoskeletal

Fibropapillomatosis continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in sea turtles, particularly in Chelonia mydas. Turtles with this debilitating herpesvirus disease usually present with multiple, large, and ulcerated cutaneous masses that compromise both locomotion and feeding. There are very few available therapeutic strategies, with surgical excision being the most common. However, this surgical excision is associated with a high rate of local disease recurrence and secondary infections. Electrochemotherapy has been used for the treatment of epithelial neoplasm in several ani

Electrochemotherapy associates the local delivery of anticancer drugs with the administration of permeabilizing electric pulses that support the antiblastic action. The basic instrumentation for this therapy is constituted by a pulse generator and various specific electrodes. While many efforts have been profuse by researchers in this field to obtain the standardization of the pulse generating equipment over the past 15 years, the delivery apparatus still needs refinements in order to reach most of the body districts, to control the homogeneity and stability of the electric fields and to furth

Bone is the third most common site for metastases, frequently leading to skeletal-related events (SREs) such as pain, metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC), and pathological fractures all of which significantly impact patients' quality of life. In recent years, minimally invasive image-guided therapies have been developed to achieve local tumor control, alleviate pain, and improve functionality, often in conjunction with long-established treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery) and analgesics. Cementoplasty and thermal ablation have demonstrated proven efficacy and safety; h
