Fate of metals contained in waste electrical and electronic equipment in a municipal waste treatment process.

In Japan, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that is not covered by the recycling laws are treated as municipal solid waste. A part of common metals are recovered during the treatment; however, other metals are rarely recovered and their destinations are not clear. This study investigated the distribution ratios and substance flows of 55 metals contained in WEEE during municipal waste treatment using shredding and separation techniques at a Japanese municipal waste treatment plant. The results revealed that more than half of Cu and most of Al contained in WEEE end up in landfills

Autonomous Solar Metallurgy for High-Purity Gold Recovery from Electronic Waste.

Sustainable recovery of precious metals from electronic waste is constrained by the difficulty of integrating rapid capture, complete reduction, and product separation without external reagents or energy-intensive inputs. Here, we report a bioinspired, defect-encoded solar metallurgical platform based on copper sulfide (Cu31S16) that couples light harvesting, photothermal conversion, and intrinsic redox functionality. Copper-vacancy-induced mid-gap states enhance broadband solar absorption, localized thermal amplification, and photoexcited charge generation, while soft sulfide coordination sit

Selective gold extraction from electronic waste using high-temperature-synthesized reagents.

For over two hundred years, cyanide has served as the primary reagent for gold extraction. However, due to its high toxicity, the use of cyanide poses significant risks. Traditional low-toxicity leaching reagents have limitations that restrict their widespread industrial application, leading to the necessity for the development of new, efficient, and low-toxic gold leaching reagents to support sustainable gold production. In this study, a novel, efficient, and low-toxicity gold extraction reagent was synthesized at high temperatures by combining urea, sodium carbonate, and a specific iron salt

Working conditions and environmental exposures among electronic waste workers in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and describe informal e-waste recycling and working conditions at Agbogbloshie, Accra, Ghana. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews which were qualitatively analysed from a grounded theory perspective. RESULTS: Workers obtained e-waste from the various residential areas in Accra, then dismantled and burned them in open air to recover copper, aluminum, steel, and other products for sale to customers on-site or at the nearby Agbogbloshie market. The processers worked under unhealthy conditions often surrounded by refuse and human excreta without any form of protec

Feeding preference of insect larvae to waste electrical and electronic equipment plastics.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plastics not only pollute the environment, but are challenging to treat in an environmentally friendly manner. Biodegradation by insect larvae is potentially an eco-friendly method to treat WEEE plastics, but information about the feeding preference of insect larvae to WEEE plastics is lacking. In this study, a total of nine WEEE and pristine plastics were chosen to feed larvae of the following two insect species, i.e. Galleria mellonella and Tenebrio molitor. G. mellonella larvae significantly favor corresponding pristine plastics compared to t

Hematological, cardiovascular and oxidative DNA damage markers associated with heavy metal exposure in electronic waste (e-waste) workers of Bangladesh.

Electronic waste (e-waste) contains hazardous elements such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and other toxic elements that pose significant health risks to the population directly exposed. We recruited 199 e-waste recycling workers and 104 non-exposed workers in Bangladesh and analyzed heavy metals in blood and hair, as well as hematological and cardiovascular parameters including, blood lipids and blood pressure. We fitted quantile regression models at 0.5 quantile to evaluate the impact of blood Pb, Cd, and total hair Hg (THg) on hematological and cardiovascular parameters and the r

Reducing ophthalmic surgical waste through electronic instructions for use: a multisociety position paper.

Every ophthalmic surgical supply, including intraocular lenses (IOLs), IOL cartridges, and ophthalmic viscosurgical device syringes, is packaged with instructions for use (IFU). These pamphlets are printed in multiple languages and, in the case of an IOL, significantly increase the size and weight of the packaging. To eliminate this significant and unnecessary source of waste, we recommend that manufacturers move to Quick Response codes that link to online electronic IFU (e-IFU) as a sensible alternative. In addition to reducing carbon emissions and manufacturing costs, e-IFU can be updated mo

Enhancing gold recovery from electronic waste via lixiviant metabolic engineering in Chromobacterium violaceum.

Conventional leaching (extraction) methods for gold recovery from electronic waste involve the use of strong acids and pose considerable threat to the environment. The alternative use of bioleaching microbes for gold recovery is non-pollutive and relies on the secretion of a lixiviant or (bio)chemical such as cyanide for extraction of gold from electronic waste. However, widespread industrial use of bioleaching microbes has been constrained by the limited cyanogenic capabilities of lixiviant-producing microorganisms such as Chromobacterium violaceum. Here we show the construction of a metaboli

Effects of lead and cadmium exposure from electronic waste on child physical growth.

Many studies indicate that lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) exposure may alter bone development through both direct and indirect mechanisms, increasing the risk of osteoporosis later in life. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between Pb and Cd exposure, physical growth, and bone and calcium metabolism in children of an electronic waste (e-waste) processing area. We recruited 246 children (3-8 years) in a kindergarten located in Guiyu, China. Blood lead levels (BLLs) and blood cadmium levels (BCLs) of recruited children were measured as biomarkers for exposure. Serum calcium, o

Strategic prioritization for Tehran's electronic waste management via integrated SWOT and QSPM analysis.

This study developed a strategic framework for electronic waste management in Tehran, Iran's capital megacity, by integrating SWOT analysis with the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). Insights were obtained from a balanced panel of 30 local stakeholders: 15 public-sector officials from Tehran's Waste Management Organization and 15 managers of private recycling facilities. The QSPM analysis was then employed to prioritize the strategies, identifying six key approaches. The formulation of comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations for e-waste recycling emerged

Selective Recovery of Gold from Electronic Waste by New Efficient Type of Sorbent.

Modular connectors are applied by computer users, and they can be metallic secondary sources containing metals such as gold and copper. Because gold is a micro-component, the solution obtained after the pin digestion contains a low concentration of gold(III) ions, and efficient and selective sorbent should be used for gold(III) ion recovery. The selective removal of small amounts of gold(III) from 0.001-6 M hydrochloric acid solutions using pure and solvent-impregnated macroporous polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene sorbents (Purolite MN 202 and Cyanex 272) is presented. Electronic Waste Low-Temperature Processing: An Alternative Thermochemical Pretreatment to Improve Component Separation.

The production of electronic waste due to technological development, economic growth and increasing population has been rising fast, pushing for solutions before the environmental pressure achieves unprecedented levels. Recently, it was observed that many extractive metallurgy alternatives had been considered to recover value from this type of waste. Regarding pyrometallurgy, little is known about the low-temperature processing applied before fragmentation and subsequent component separation. Therefore, the present manuscript studies such alternative based on scanning electron microscopy chara

Fermentation-based oxalic acid production aimed at sustainable critical metal recovery from electronic waste.

This study systematically investigates the biogenic production of oxalic acid (OA, H2C2O4) via submerged fermentation to establish a sustainable reagent for critical metal recovery applications. Preliminary shake-flask experiments evaluated Aspergillus niger strains (ATCC 1015 and CECT 2807), optimal carbon sources, and the influence of pH adjustment. Despite inherent biological variance across replicates, A. niger ATCC 1015 demonstrated a superior production trajectory, yielding 71.0 ± 27.7 mM OA in 5 days. Intermittent pH adjustment above 4.0 significantly enhanced secretion to 90.4 ± 5.8 mM

Exposure-Associated Metabolic Changes in Electronic-Waste Recycling Workers: An Exploratory Untargeted Metabolomics Study.

Electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling is an important source of occupational exposure to complex mixtures of heavy metals, yet the broader metabolic consequences remain insufficiently characterized. Untargeted metabolomics provides a hypothesis-generating approach for identifying systemic biochemical alterations associated with such exposure. A cross-sectional serum metabolomics study was performed using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) in negative electrospray ionization mode, including 30 e-waste recycling workers and 46 non-exposed controls.
