Electrooculography.

The electrooculogram (EOG) assesses the function and health of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and also the interaction between the RPE and photoreceptors. This is done by noting the changes in the corneo-retinal standing potential (the difference between the retina and electropositive cornea) during the dark-adapted and light-adapted states.

[Electroretinography and electrooculography in ischemic retinopathy].

Ischemic retinopathy caused by central retinal artery occlusion destroys the inner retina including the inner nuclear layer. The b-wave and the oscillatory potentials in the ERG on-response and the d-wave and the oscillatory potentials in the ERG off-response are impaired. In EOG the amplitude of the slow oscillations and the standing potential are reduced. These findings can help to localize the generators of the different ERG- and EOG-components.

[Infrared and video oculography--alternatives to electrooculography?].

With the introduction of each new technique for registering eye movements, the question arises concerning whether these provide a reliable and accurate alternative for the diagnosis of labyrinthine dysfunction when compared to the most commonly used electro-oculographic technique. To answer this question we compared mean slow-phase velocity (SPV) using three different recording techniques:electro-oculography (EOG), video-oculography (VOG) and infrared oculography (IROG) during four different types of examinations. The examinations were the eye target tracking test (ETT), horizontal and vertica

Detection of myasthenia gravis using electrooculography signals.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder resulting from skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue. An early common symptom is fatigable weakness of the extrinsic ocular muscles; if symptoms remain confined to the ocular muscles after a few years, this is classified as ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG). Diagnosis of MG when there are mild, isolated ocular symptoms can be difficult, and currently available diagnostic techniques are insensitive, non-specific or technically cumbersome. In addition, there are no accurate biomarkers to follow severity of ocular dysfunction in MG over t

Analysis of electrooculography signals for the detection of Myasthenia Gravis.

OBJECTIVE: A precursor to more severe forms of Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is ocular MG (OMG) in which the MG symptoms are localized to the eyes. Current MG diagnostic methods are often invasive, painful, and not always specific. The objective of the proposed work was to extract quantifiable features from electrooculography (EOG) signals recorded around the eyes and develop an alternative non-invasive screening method for detecting MG. METHODS: EOG signals acquired from MG and Control subjects were analyzed for eye movement characteristics and quantified using time and wavelet domain signal proces

Eye movement analysis for activity recognition using electrooculography.

In this work, we investigate eye movement analysis as a new sensing modality for activity recognition. Eye movement data were recorded using an electrooculography (EOG) system. We first describe and evaluate algorithms for detecting three eye movement characteristics from EOG signals-saccades, fixations, and blinks-and propose a method for assessing repetitive patterns of eye movements. We then devise 90 different features based on these characteristics and select a subset of them using minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) feature selection. We validate the method using an eight partici

Dark adaptation compared with electrooculography in primary biliary cirrhosis.

In a series of asymptomatic patients with primary biliary cirrhosis there was a significant impairment of dark adaptation thresholds as compared with a control group. Vitamin A levels were abnormally low in only two of the patients and these two both showed high dark adaptation thresholds. The electrooculogram was reduced in only the most severely affected case. It is suggested that visual function tests should be performed alongside vitamin A level measurements before deciding on treatment.

[Electrooculography. Its value in the diagnosis of the patient with a balance disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Controversy persists on the value of electrooculography (EOG) in the diagnosis of the unbalanced patient. The aim of this study has been to know the utility of EOG in the diagnosis of patients with equilibrium disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have examined 1000 patients in whom EOG test has been performed for unbalance symptoms. Results have been classified in peripheric or central pattern. Those patients included in the central pattern group have been compared with the results of imaging techniques. RESULTS: 45.7% of EOG performed showed pathological signs, 29.2% were of pe

A comprehensive electrooculography measurement system and protocols for screening myasthenia gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disorder that can precipitate serious and fatal complications, especially when respiratory muscles are affected. Current electrodiagnostic methods, such as Single Fiber Electromyography (SFEMG) and Repetitive Nerve Stimulation (RNS), have notable limitations. While SFEMG is sensitive to neuromuscular abnormalities rather than being specific for MG, it is also a semi-invasive procedure that requires supervision by specialist clinicians and an expensive clinical setup. Conversely, RNS is highly specific for MG, but its sensitivity decreases in cases of l

Electrooculography and optical coherence tomography reveal late-onset Best disease.

PURPOSE: Best vitelliform macular dystrophy, also known as Best disease, is a macular dystrophy characterized by bilateral yellowish egg yolk-like lesion(s) present within the maculae. It is a slowly progressive disease that usually presents at childhood. Best vitelliform macular dystrophy frequently proceeds through stages, beginning with a classic presentation described as vitelliform. A similar condition, known as adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy, has been described among adult patients. Although the two maculopathies may look similar, they are considered two separate entities

Electrooculography and Tactile Perception Collaborative Interface for 3D Human-Machine Interaction.

The human-machine interface (HMI) previously relied on a single perception interface that cannot realize three-dimensional (3D) interaction and convenient and accurate interaction in multiple scenes. Here, we propose a collaborative interface including electrooculography (EOG) and tactile perception for fast and accurate 3D human-machine interaction. The EOG signals are mainly used for fast, convenient, and contactless 2D (XY-axis) interaction, and the tactile sensing interface is mainly utilized for complex 2D movement control and Z-axis control in the 3D interaction. Electrooculography and discriminant analysis in Duane's syndrome and sixth-cranial-nerve palsy.

Eye-movement recordings may be helpful in the differentiation of Duane's syndrome from sixth-cranial-nerve palsy. Voluntary horizontal saccades were recorded and quantitated by electrooculography in 18 patients with unilateral type I Duane's syndrome and in 25 patients with sixth-nerve palsy. When ranges of abduction were matched, the peak velocities of abducting saccades in affected eyes were decreased equally in both groups. However, the peak velocities of adducting saccades in sound eyes were slowed in patients with Duane's syndrome. Because the standard deviations in saccadic velocities ar

Electrooculography-based continuous eye-writing recognition system for efficient assistive communication systems.

Human-computer interface systems whose input is based on eye movements can serve as a means of communication for patients with locked-in syndrome. Eye-writing is one such system; users can input characters by moving their eyes to follow the lines of the strokes corresponding to characters. Although this input method makes it easy for patients to get started because of their familiarity with handwriting, existing eye-writing systems suffer from slow input rates because they require a pause between input characters to simplify the automatic recognition process. In this paper, we propose a contin

Triggered Electrooculography for Identification of Oculomotor and Abducens Nerves during Skull Base Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Electrooculography (EOG) records eyeball movements as changes in the potential difference between the negatively charged retina and the positively charged cornea. We aimed to investigate whether reliable EOG waveforms can be evoked by electrical stimulation of the oculomotor and abducens nerves during skull base surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 18 patients who had undergone a skull base tumor surgery using EOG (11 craniotomies and seven endonasal endoscopic surgeries). Stimulation was performed at 5 Hz with a stimulus duration of 200 μs and an intensity

[Research on electrooculography artifact removal from electroencephalography signals based on frequency slice wavelet transform].

To address the strong contamination of single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) signals by electrooculography (EOG) artifacts during acquisition, this paper proposes an EOG artifact suppression method based on an improved frequency slice wavelet transform (FSWT). First, the EEG signal is adaptively decomposed into frequency-slice components using FSWT. Based on the low-frequency energy bursts induced by eye blinks, a robust median absolute deviation (MAD)-based threshold is used to localize artifact-contaminated intervals. Subsequently, only within the detected artifact-contaminated interva

A Fusion Algorithm Based on a Constant Velocity Model for Improving the Measurement of Saccade Parameters with Electrooculography.

Electrooculography (EOG) serves as a widely employed technique for tracking saccadic eye movements in a diverse array of applications. These encompass the identification of various medical conditions and the development of interfaces facilitating human-computer interaction. Nonetheless, EOG signals are often met with skepticism due to the presence of multiple sources of noise interference. These sources include electroencephalography, electromyography linked to facial and extraocular muscle activity, electrical noise, signal artifacts, skin-electrode drifts, impedance fluctuations over time, a
