Vertical or Horizontal? Diagnosing and Treating Cats Who Urinate Outside the Box.

Feline elimination problems are commonly presented to general practitioners and behavioral medicine specialists. The correct diagnosis is often missed by veterinarians owing to individual variation and multifactorial cases. Three diagnostic umbrellas need to be considered: medical problems, toileting behavior outside of the litter box, and urine marking. The treatment plan for most cases, regardless of etiology, involves optimum litter box management, fulfilling cats' environmental needs, stress reduction, behavior therapy techniques, and trigger removal. Medical management with psychoactive m

Feline litter box issues associate with cat personality, breed, and age at sterilization.

OBJECTIVE: To identify potential risk factors for feline litter box issues (eg, house soiling). ANIMALS: 3,049 privately owned cats. PROCEDURES: Data were collected using a validated, owner-completed survey with convenience sampling. The feline behavior and personality survey included 138 statements related to cat behavior and questions concerning cat background and health. Statements related to litter box issues were subjected to factor analysis. Associations between the identified factors and personality and background variables were studied using generalized linear models. Strength of the

Current research in canine and feline pheromones.

Pheromonotherapy seems to be a new therapeutic approach allowing practitioners to tackle the treatment of behavioral disorders in a natural, specific, and safe way. Although the efficacy of pheromones has been assessed in some specific behavioral problems, it seems that their range of action could cover the wide field of reduction of stress. Therefore, the use of pheromones should not be reduced to treatment of behavioral disorders (potentially associated with psychotropes or a behavioral modification program) but should be included in a strategy of improving the welfare of pets in veterinary

Medical differentials with potential behavioral manifestations.

Boundaries between behavioral conditions and medical differentials are likely to blur more rather than less as we learn more about genomic, cellular, and subcellular effects on common conditions. These changes should lead to better treatment but may also require a paradigm shift in how we view behavioral conditions and the mechanisms that contribute to them.

[Behavior problems in dogs. An inventory of the problems based on a survey conducted among Dutch veterinarians].

On the basis if an inquiry among Dutch veterinary practitioners, an attempt has been made to obtain an impression of the occurrence, the symptoms and the therapeutic measures used in problem behaviour in dogs. In addition, answers have been obtained to some supplementary questions. The response to the inquiry was limited. Aggression appeared to be the most serious and most frequent behaviour problem. Following this nervousness, unruliness, house-soiling, mounting and destructiveness were found to be serious behaviour problems with a high frequency. Therapeutic measures in unruliness and house-

Chronic Lower Urinary Tract Signs in Cats: Current Understanding of Pathophysiology and Management.

Cats that present with chronic lower urinary tract signs are often diagnosed with feline idiopathic/interstitial cystitis, a disease syndrome that is more than just a bladder disease and can be associated wtih a myriad of other co-morbidities. Further, gaining a better understanding of FIC (including the most accurate descriptive terminology) may help researchers, veterinarians, pet food companies, and clients develop and tailor the best possible approaches to management of these cat's unique health and welfare needs.

Vomeronasal organ: critical role in mediating sexual behavior of the male hamster.

Sexual behavior in male hamsters is totally abolished by bilateral removal of the olfactory bulbs. This operation eliminates sensory input from both the olfactory and the vomeronasal systems. We previously demonstrated that peripheral destruction of the olfactory receptors caused anosmia but did not impair male hamster mating behavior. Here we demonstrate that peripheral deafferentation of the vomeronasal system produces severe sexual behavior deficits in approximately one-third of the treated animals. Combined deafferentation of both the vomeronasal and the olfactory systems eliminates copula

Regulatory changes following kainic acid-induced striatal lesions.

Kainic acid-induced lesions (KAL) of the striatum produce body weight and regulatory deficits in the rat. Unlike lateral hypothalamic rats. KAL rats drink more during food deprivation and eat more afterwards as compared to both baseline conditions and control rats. The present study investigated these effects further. As in previous studies, food deprivation was found to cause polydipsia and increased postdeprivational food intake in the KAL animal. Urination and defecation, often used as an index of emotionality, were also found to increase under these conditions. When the antidiuretic hormon

Behavioural studies of faecal continence in the rat.

BACKGROUND: A behavioural animal model of faecal continence and/or incontinence would be of value in experimental studies of the mechanisms by which sacral neuromodulation can effect continence mechanisms in humans. AIM: The aim of this behavioural study was to establish whether the rat, an obligate coprophagic species, exhibits patterns of faecal continence. METHODS: Standard rat cages were modified to consist of a food and drink area, a nesting area and an empty latrine area. Three floor pressure pads were connected to hour meters to record the time spent in each area over the course of 4

Behavioural and cardiac responses towards conspecific distress calls in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa).

In domestic pigs, vocalisation can be an indicator of distress and negative emotional states. It might play a role in the transfer of emotion between individuals ('emotional contagion' or 'empathy'), which could result in impaired animal welfare on a group level based on the distress in an individual member of the group. The aim of this study was to characterise the responses of pigs to conspecific distress calls. We performed a playback experiment in an open arena with 24 juvenile German Landrace pigs, during which individual subjects were exposed to both conspecific distress calls and an art

Excretion and binding of tritium-labelled oestradiol in mice (Mus musculus): implications for the Bruce effect.

Male mouse urine contains 17beta-oestradiol (E(2)) and other steroids. Given that males actively direct urine at proximate females and intrauterine implantation of blastocysts is vulnerable to minute amounts of exogenous oestrogens, males' capacity to disrupt early pregnancy could be mediated by steroids in their urine. When male mice were implanted with osmotic pumps containing tritium-labelled E(2) ((3)H-E(2)) or injected i.p. with (3)H-E(2), radioactivity was reliably detected in their urine. Following intranasal administration of (3)H-E(2) to inseminated females, radioactivity was detected

Deletion of the Bax gene disrupts sexual behavior and modestly impairs motor function in mice.

Cell death is a nearly ubiquitous feature of the developing nervous system, and differential death in males and females contributes to several well studied sex differences in neuron number. Nonetheless, the functional importance of neuronal cell death has been subjected to few direct tests. Bax, a pro-apoptotic protein, is required for cell death in many neural regions. Deletion of the Bax gene in mice increases neuron number in several areas and eliminates sex differences in cell number in the brain and spinal cord. Here, sexual and motor behaviors were examined in Bax-/- mice and their wild-

Quantification of Urine Elimination Behaviors in Cats with a Video Recording System.

BACKGROUND: Urinary disorders in cats often require subjective caregiver quantification of clinical signs to establish a diagnosis and monitor therapeutic outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate use of a video recording system (VRS) to better assess and quantify urination behaviors in cats. ANIMALS: Eleven healthy cats and 8 cats with disorders potentially associated with abnormal urination patterns. METHODS: Prospective study design. Litter box urination behaviors were quantified with a VRS for 14 days and compared to daily caregiver observations. Video recordings were analyzed by a behavior a

Modifications in gonadotropin control and reproductive behavior in the female rat by hypothalamic and preoptic lesions.

Effects of small hypothalamic and preoptic area lesions on vaginal cyclicity, ovulation and ovarian weights of female rats were examined. Animals were then gonadectomized and tested for lordosis behavior following injections of estrogen alone and estrogen plus progesterone. Male sex behavior was also measured during daily treatment with testosterone. Relative to sham operated rats, lesions in the dorsal preoptic area produced a significant increase in lordosis behavior, virtual elimination of male sex behavior, and only marginal effects on ovarian function. Animals with lesions in the ventral

Effects of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads on agonistic behavior in female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Four studies were conducted to determine the role of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads in the regulation of intrasex agonistic behavior in female hamsters. In the first experiment animals maintained under Long or Short photoperiods were tested in same or opposite photoperiod pairs. Under both testing conditions, Short-day animals tended to exhibit a higher ratio of offensive to defensive behaviors, which was due primarily to a reduced level of defensive behavior in Short-day groups. In the second experiment animals under Long and Short photoperiods were tested following sham surgery

Zinc-induced peripheral anosmia and behavioral responses to novelty in mice: a quantitative-genetic analysis.

Adult male mice were made anosmic by intranasal flushing with a 5% zinc sulfate solution. Twelve behavioral variables were measured in treated as well as saline-irrigated control animals placed in a novel environment. The genetic underpinnings and the genotype-treatment interactions with regard to these behaviors were analyzed in a classical Mendelian cross between the inbred strains C57BL/6 and DBA/2 and in a full 4 X 4 diallel cross, replicated five times, between these strains and strains C3H/St an CPB-K. Based on the hypothesis of an evolutionary history of directional selection for a well

Excessive production of sex hormones in a cat with an adrenocortical tumor.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was evaluated because it was spraying urine that had a strong odor and had developed aggressive behavior. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination did not detect any palpable testes within the scrotum; however, spines were detected on the penis. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a mass in the region of the right adrenal gland. Results of adrenal hormonal analyses revealed considerable increases in serum concentrations of androstenedione and testosterone. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: A mass associated with the right adrenal gland

Dissociated effects of inhibition of catecholamine synthesis on motor activity, "emotionality," and aggression in mice.

The inhibitor of catecholamine synthesis at the tyrosine hydroxylase level, alpha-methyltyrosine, administered in daily doses of 250 mg/kg IP, altered motor activity and aggressive behavior of isolated male mice in ten-minute paired encounter tests conducted on nine successive days. Motor activity was determined by an electromagnetic activity meter which measures fine and coarse movements separately. Coarse motor activity correlated significantly with aggressive behavior. Nonaggressive fine motor activity was significantly increased, while all the parameters of aggressive behavior showed a sig

Eradication of Syphacia muris from food-restricted rats without environmental decontamination.

Rodent pinworms rarely cause clinical disease, but infestation can affect experimental results. Our facility maintained a colony of Wistar rats for behavioral pharmacology studies that had been infested with Syphacia muris for > 15 years. The laboratory in which the animals were housed encompassed several rooms and contained a variety of complex behavioral equipment, including > 60 operant chambers. Several prior attempts to eliminate the pinworms were unsuccessful because of inadequate duration of treatment and incomplete environmental decontamination. Many of the rats in this colony were foo
