Transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of allelopathic responses in Elymus nutans.

To explore the allelopathic response mechanism of Elymus nutans to the extracts of Ligularia sagitta, seed germination tests combined with integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses were performed to systematically investigate the effects of the extracts at different concentrations on its germination characteristics and molecular metabolism. The results showed that the concentration range of 0.01-0.10 mg/mL was the sensitive interval for the allelopathic response of Elymus nutans to the extracts of Ligularia sagitta, and germination energy (GE) exhibited higher sensitivity to allelopathi

Transcriptomic Profiling Reveals the Seed Aging Process in Elymus sibiricus, a Dominant Alpine Grass.

Seed aging is a critical biological process that leads to progressive loss of seed vigor, thereby constraining germplasm conservation and agricultural productivity. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this process in grass species, we performed transcriptomic analyses to characterize regulatory networks underlying seed aging in Elymus sibiricus, a dominant forage species on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Seeds were subjected to artificial accelerated aging (45 °C, 80% relative humidity, 1-6 days), followed by physiological evaluation and RNA sequencing. Seed vigor and germination perc

Chloroplast Genome Evolution, Heteroplasmy, and Inverted Repeat Dynamics in the Elymus Complex (Triticeae, Poaceae): Insights from Single-Molecule Sequencing of Elymus ciliaris and Comparative Analysis of St-Genome Lineages.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Elymus sensu lato (Poaceae) is arguably the largest and most complex genus in the tribe Triticeae. It includes hybrids and polyploids based on x=7 chromosomes, all including the St genome, forming a valuable genepool for forage grass and cereal breeding. Analysis of chloroplast genome diversity and structural dynamics is critical for resolving maternal lineages, reticulate evolution and biodiversity across this agronomically important complex, refining their taxonomy, conservation and exploitation. METHODS: We sequenced the complete chloroplast genome (plastome) of Elym

Mycorrhizal Inoculation Enhances Nutrient Absorption and Induces Insect-Resistant Defense of Elymus nutans.

The majority of terrestrial plants can form symbiotic associations on their roots with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the soil to stimulate the growth and nutrient uptake of the host plant and to improve plant resistance to insects and disease. However, the use of AMF for insect control on gramineous forages requires further study. Here, we evaluated the effects of AMF (Funneliformis mosseae) inoculation on the defense against Locusta migratoria attack in Elymus nutans. Inoculation assays showed that mycorrhizal plants had a higher resistance than non-inoculated plants, as evidenced by

Nano-Fe3O4: Enhancing the tolerance of Elymus nutans to Cd stress through regulating programmed cell death.

Cadmium (Cd) poses a significant threat to plant growth and the environment. Nano-Fe3O4 is effective in alleviating Cd stress in plants. Elymus nutans Griseb. is an important fodder crop on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). However, the potential mechanism by which nano-Fe3O4 alleviates Cd stress in E. nutans is not well understood. E. nutans were subjected to single Cd, single nano-Fe3O4, and co-treatment with nano-Fe3O4 and Cd, and the effects on morphology, Cd uptake, antioxidant enzyme activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and programmed cell death (PCD) were studied to clarify t

Elymus chaobotryus (Poaceae), a new species from the north-eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China.

Elymus chaobotryus Y.C. Zhang, sp. nov. (Poaceae, Triticeae) from the north-eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (Tongren City, southeastern Qinghai, China) is described and illustrated based on detailed morphological comparisons and complete plastome data. The new species is readily distinguished from morphologically similar taxa by its pendulous compound spike 16-19 cm long, bearing 10-15 short lateral branches (2-4 cm) produced from nearly all nodes of the main rachis; the branches become progressively longer toward the base, giving the inflorescence a characteristic grape-like appearance. It fu

Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses reveal genotype specific response to drought stress in Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus).

Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus) is a xero-mesophytic forage grass with high nutritional quality and stress tolerance. Among its numerous germplasm resources, some possess superior drought resistance. In this study, we firstly investigated the physiological differences between the leaves of drought-tolerant (DT) and drought-sensitive (DS) genotypes under different field water contents (FWC) in soil culture. The results showed that, under drought stress, DT maintained a lower leaf water potential for water absorption, sustained higher photosynthetic efficiency, and reduced oxidative damage i

Genomic basis of local adaptation in Elymus sibiricus revealed by genotype-environment associations and common garden experiments.

BACKGROUND: Unraveling the genetic basis underlying local adaptation represents a pivotal area of research within ecological and evolutionary biology. In the present study, we explored the genomic mechanisms that underpin the local adaptation of Elymus sibiricus, an indigenous grass species predominantly distributed in the temperate alpine regions of the Eurasian continent. RESULTS: Population structure analyses categorize 316 accessions of E. sibiricus into three distinct clusters: XJ (Xinjiang), NC (North of China), and the QTP (Qinghai-Xizang Plateau). Furthermore, through selection sweep

Multi-omics integration revealed the molecular responses and key candidate genes underlying cold tolerance in Elymus nutans.

The perennial grass Elymus nutans, native to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, exhibits exceptional cold tolerance. To understand its underlying mechanisms, we integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiling under cold stress. Our results revealed a distinct two-phase response strategy to cold stress. The early phase (0-24 h) featured rapid Ca2+ signaling, redox-related transcriptional reprogramming, and increased membrane permeability. The late phase (36-72 h) shifted toward primary metabolic regulation and the translation of protective proteins. Notably, a prominent time lag (temp

Genome‑Wide Identification of NAC Transcription Factors in Elymus sibiricus and Functional Characterisation of EsNAC29 in Light Inhibition.

Elymus sibiricus L., a perennial grass critical for livestock production and ecological restoration on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is frequently exposed to intense high-altitude light stress. NAC transcription factors are key regulators of plant development and stress responses, yet they remain uncharacterised in E. sibiricus. Here, we reported the first genome-wide analysis of the NAC family in this allotetraploid species and identified 290 EsNAC genes. These genes are classified into 14 subfamilies, 11 of which have undergone significant expansion mainly through segmental duplication events,

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in Elymus nutans silage from different altitudes on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) have attracted more attentions in fermented feed recently. However, little information is available on the occurrence and distribution of ARGs in ensiled forages in the alpine region of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (QTP) with an extremely harsh environment. METHODS: The study investigated the distribution and spread mechanism of ARB and ARGs in Elymus nutans silage along 2600 m (low), 3600 m (medium) and 4600 m (high) altitude in the QTP. RESULTS: The major ARG types in Elymus nutans silage were multidrug

[Analysis of effects of salt stress on absorption and accumulation of mineral elements in Elymus spp. using atomic absorption spectrophotometer].

Salinization contributes significantly to soil degradation and the growth and survival of plants. A high level of salts imposes both ionic and osmotic stresses on plants, resulting in an excessive accumulation of sodium (Na) in plant tissues. Na toxicity disrupts the uptake of soil nutrients. Plant uptake and absorption of macro-elements under salt stress have been studied in plants, but there is little literature addressing the effect of salt stress on plant accumulation and absorption of micro-elements. Species in Elymus genus are among the most important forage plants on high-salinity soils

Contrasting Growth and Physiological Response Profiles of Three Native Alpine Elymus Forage Grasses Under Combined Cadmium and PEG-6000-Induced Osmotic Stress.

The co-occurrence of soil drought and cadmium (Cd) pollution represents an important combined-stress scenario in degraded alpine grasslands, yet comparative responses of native Elymus forage grasses remain poorly resolved. Seedlings of E. sibiricus cv. Chuancao, E. breviaristatus, and E. nutans cv. Gannan were exposed to a full-factorial hydroponic matrix of four nominal Cd concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg·L-1) and four PEG-6000 concentrations of 0, 5, 7.5, and 10% (w/v). Comparative Analysis of Triticeae Satellite Repeats Using Low-Coverage Sequencing, qPCR, and FISH.

Satellite DNA is a dynamic component of plant genomes and a valuable source of cytogenetic markers, but its diversity and chromosomal distribution in polyploid Triticeae remain insufficiently studied. Here, low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, graph-based repeat clustering, quantitative PCR, multivariate statistics and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to identify and characterize satellite repeats in Elymus and related Triticeae species. Sixteen repeat clusters (E1-E16), with monomer lengths of 118-667 bp, showed distinct taxonomic distributions and copy-number profiles acr

Terrestrial Toxicity of Synthetic Gas-to-Liquid versus Crude Oil-Derived Drilling Fluids in Soil.

Unlike most other conventional petroleum products that are derived from crude oil, gas-to-liquids (GTLs) are petroleum products that are synthesized from natural gas (methane). This process results in GTL products having no sulfur and low aromatic content, so they should have less impact on human health and the environment compared with crude oil-derived products. The GTLs have been registered for use as nonaqueous base fluids (NABFs) in drilling muds, which aid in the process of drilling wells for oil and gas extraction; it is through these uses and others that they enter terrestrial environm

Lignocellulosic Biomass of C3 and C4 Perennial Grasses as a Valuable Feedstock for Particleboard Manufacture.

Looking for new alternative raw materials is one of the key issues in line with a bioeconomy approach, particularly for particleboard manufacturing. In this framework, this paper presents a comparison of some physico-mechanical properties and the formaldehyde contents of particleboards made with 30% substitution of grass biomass from six perennial grass species. Our studies indicate relatively high values of mechanical properties for particleboards made with the addition of biomass from grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway: Miscanthus x giganteus and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). A fourth teleost lineage possessing extra-oral teeth: the genus atherion (teleostei; atheriniformes).

In the course of an evolutionary and developmental study on the dermal skeleton, our attention was drawn to the existence of denticles located outside the oral cavity in the atheriniform species Atherion elymus. These denticles, attached to the surface of most dermal bones of the head, are especially numerous on the snout, chin and the undersides of the lower region of the head, where they are aligned forming a crenulated keel. Using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, we clearly demonstrate the dental (vs bony) nature of these denticles. They are small, conical elements most

Land degradation of abandoned croplands in the Xilingol steppe region, Inner Mongolia, China.

Steppe grasslands are distributed over vast areas in arid and semiarid regions of Eurasia. However, steppe grasslands face desertification or degradation caused by human over-activity. In the last decades, steppe regions have seen increased areas of crop cultivation and subsequent abandonment due to inappropriate agricultural management. Land degradation of abandoned croplands has become a common problem in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. A field survey was conducted in the Xilingol steppe, and vegetation was classified into three groups. Based on comparisons of species compositio
