Human cadavers used for surgical training are embalmed using various methods to facilitate tissue storage and longevity while preserving the natural characteristics required to achieve high fidelity functional task alignment. However, there are no standardized means to evaluate the suitability of embalming solutions for this purpose. The McMaster Embalming Scale (MES) was developed to assess the extent to which embalming solutions allow tissues to achieve physical and functional correspondence to clinical contexts. The MES follows a five-point Likert scale format and evaluates the effect of em

BACKGROUND: Soft cadavers are becoming increasingly popular for surgical skills development in competency-based medical education curricula. However, few studies evaluate this strategy's viability, dependability, and validity, particularly in India. This study intends to investigate embalming procedures and procedural skills practices at medical institutions.
METHODS: A validated questionnaire gathered information on demographic details, embalming practices, surgical skill training, willingness to adopt modern embalming techniques and awareness and practice of soft embalming methods. A total

Embalming fixatives such as formaldehyde and phenol have been associated with occupational health hazards. While anatomists aim at replacing these chemicals, this seems presently unfeasible in particular for formaldehyde. Furthermore, fixation protocols usually require well-equipped facilities with highly experienced staff to achieve good fixation results in spite of only a minimal use of formaldehyde. Combining these aspects, a technique robust enough to be carried out by morticians is presented, resulting in durable tissues with minimal formaldehyde use. An embalming protocol involving pheno

Simulation-based training is critical for surgical skill acquisition and typically uses soft-preserved body donors, as they represent high-fidelity models (vs. hard-fixed donors) with prolonged periods of preservation (vs. unembalmed donors). While many soft-embalming solutions exist, there remains no standardization between centers nor evaluation of the solution-associated tissue suitability for surgical skills training. The current study aims to remedy that by systematically comparing qualitative ratings (McMaster Embalming Scale [MES]) and quantitative tissue properties (biomechanical testi

Teaching and learning anatomy by using human cadaveric specimens has been a foundation of medical and biomedical teaching for hundreds of years. Therefore, the majority of institutions that teach topographical anatomy rely on body donation programmes to provide specimens for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of gross anatomy. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented challenge to anatomy teaching because of the suspension of donor acceptance at most institutions. This was largely due to concerns about the potential transmissibility of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the absence of d

The causes of mortality of 3,649 white and 397 non-white male U.S. embalmers and funeral directors, who had died between 1975 and 1985, were examined in a proportional mortality study. Non-significant excesses were found for malignancies of the buccal cavity and pharynx (PMR = 120) and for nasopharyngeal cancer (PMR = 216). No sinonasal cancers were observed, while 1.7 were expected. A statistically significant excess of colon cancer (PMR = 127) was found and a non-significant excess of brain and other CNS cancer was noted among whites only (PMR = 123). Statistically significant excesses of ma

The ability of the ancient Egyptians to preserve the human body through embalming has not only fascinated people since antiquity, but also has always raised the question of how this outstanding chemical and ritual process was practically achieved. Here we integrate archaeological, philological and organic residue analyses, shedding new light on the practice and economy of embalming in ancient Egypt. We analysed the organic contents of 31 ceramic vessels recovered from a 26th Dynasty embalming workshop at Saqqara1,2. These vessels were labelled according to their content and/or use, enabling us

A 58-year-old man died suddenly in Madagascar and poisoning was suspected. The body was embalmed after death and the general state of preservation was good. We found a major aortic dissection with a large false lumen from the aortic root to the common iliac arteries and a hemopericardium with formalinized blood clot. The intimal tear was on the ascending aorta, and an intramural hemorrhage was noted at the right coronary artery, attesting to a retrograde dissection. Microscopic studies confirmed aortic dissection with extensive intramural hemorrhage and also confirmed the retrograde dissection

BACKGROUND: Conventional embalming relies on arterial cannulation, which may be difficult when vessels are diseased, inaccessible, or damaged. Intraosseous (IO) vascular access, widely used in emergency medicine, provides a rapid and reliable route into the medullary venous system. This technical note describes a simple IO embalming protocol and assesses its feasibility and performance in human cadavers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: IO access was established in cadavers using bone-marrow needles inserted into the proximal tibia, distal femur, sternum and iliac crest. Standard formaldehyde-based emb

The present review focuses on the importance of modern embalming techniques for human cadaveric preservation, comparing recent innovations with other methods and their historical evolution. Early approaches to human embalming for medical purposes presented significant limitations. During the past century, formaldehyde became widely adopted due to its low cost and high preservation efficiency. However, its use has been progressively restricted in modern laboratories because of the considerable health risks to professionals and its limitations in maintaining the organic properties of tissues. Formalin-embalmed cadavers have been extensively used to teach anatomy. Although they ensure the preservation of anatomical structures without microbial contamination, they are considerably rigid and cannot be used to study the joint and muscle movements. Moreover, formalin irritates the eyes and airways and is carcinogenic on chronic exposure. To overcome the disadvantages of formalin-fixed cadavers, we investigated the usefulness of alternative embalming methods using saturated salt solution (SS) and Thiel's solution (TS). We compared the three solutions based on the following parameters: co

BACKGROUND: Human cadaver surgical skills training offers the highest-fidelity simulation of the operative environment, with the potential to enhance surgeon training and to reduce operative risks to patients. Embalming extends the duration that a cadaveric specimen may be used for surgical skills training and reduces the risk of disease transmission, but it can alter the properties of the cadaver tissue, reducing the simulation fidelity and training quality. The purpose of this controlled laboratory study was to evaluate 3 embalming methods, formaldehyde solution, alcohol-glycol solution, and

When conducting biomechanical testing or clinical training using embalmed human soft tissues, it is essential to understand their impact on biomechanical properties and their time dependence. Previous studies have investigated this influence, but specific variations over different embalming durations have not been thoroughly addressed to date. Ninety-seven human iliotibial band specimens were obtained from nine donors. All specimens were embalmed in ethanol-glycerin for varying durations: one day, eight days, and fourteen days. Prior to the mechanical trials, the specimens underwent osmotic wa

Individuals naturally carry bacteria and other microbes as part of their natural flora, with some being opportunistic pathogens. Approximately 30% of the population is known to carry Staphylococcus aureus in their nasal cavity, an organism that causes infections ranging from soft tissue abscesses to toxic shock syndrome. This problem is compounded by the presence of antibiotic-resistant strains such as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Commensal bacteria present on cadavers pose a risk to those who handle the body. As a Medical School Anatomy laboratory that performs hands-on

There is recent interest in recovery of periodontopathogenic bacteria from arterial and bronchial tissues to identify a link between periodontal and cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases. This interest could provide a useful clinical correlation exercise for gross anatomy. Our objective was to perform a feasibility study to determine whether these bacteria could be recovered from two sites within eight (4 dentate, 4 edentulous) human embalmed cadavers from an anatomical dissection laboratory. Bacterial samples were collected from the right coronary artery and the right superior secondary bronch

PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify the biomechanical strain of the human cervical spinal dura mater in fresh-frozen versus embalmed (formalin-fixed) states, elucidate the impact of formaldehyde fixation on its mechanical response, and provide evidence-based guidance for specimen selection in spinal biomechanical research.
METHODS: A paired repeated-measures design was employed using 20 fresh cadaveric specimens (10 male, 10 female; 35-40 years). After initial testing in the fresh-frozen state (- 20 °C storage, slow thawing), specimens were fixed in 20% neutral buffered formalin. Standardiz
