Supernumerary ovary: embryology.

This paper documents the fourteenth-ever recorded case of supernumerary ovary, and the second-largest reported thus far, a spherical 6 x 5 x 4 cm convoluted mass. Histologic examination revealed a hemorrhagic corpus luteum cyst within normal limits. Proposed mechanisms of formation are discussed, but definitive evidence of origin remains elusive. Although the presence of a supernumerary ovary may be clinically significant, many are overlooked, emphasising the importance of vigilance at laparotomy.

Upper Extremity Embryology.

The development of the upper extremity begins early in embryogenesis, with the upper extremity fully formed by week 8 of gestation. This process relies on a complex cascade of molecular interactions-a single abnormality of which can result in congenital anomalies. Hand surgeons have the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of life of patients with congenital anomalies and require a thorough understanding of the underlying embryological processes resulting in these anomalies. This chapter provides an overview of the stages of upper extremity development, the molecular mechanisms of

Rethinking embryology dogma.

Nearly five decades after the birth of the first in vitro fertilization child, the embryology laboratory still depends largely on manual, experience-driven techniques shaped by earlier technological constraints. Despite remarkable advances in imaging, bioengineering, and computational analysis, many core procedures remain resistant to redesign. This View and Review calls for a fundamental re-evaluation of laboratory dogma, proposing that future progress in assisted reproduction must rest on exploration, measurable process control, reproducibility, and clinical validation. Emerging automation e

Embryology of the hindgut.

Normal and abnormal development of the hindgut is still in debate. Normal development of the hindgut critically depends on the cloacal membrane. In this study, scanning electron microscopy of staged rat embryos between the gestational days 10-15 was performed to show the normal development of the hindgut and the abnormal development in Danforth's short tail (SD) mice. Our studies in normal and abnormal development indicate that the embryonic cloaca never passes through a stage that is similar to any form of anorectal malformation in neonates, including the so-called "cloacas" in females. To ex

Penile embryology and anatomy.

Knowledge of penile embryology and anatomy is essential to any pediatric urologist in order to fully understand and treat congenital anomalies. Sex differentiation of the external genitalia occurs between the 7th and 17th weeks of gestation. The Y chromosome initiates male differentiation through the SRY gene, which triggers testicular development. Under the influence of androgens produced by the testes, external genitalia then develop into the penis and scrotum. Dorsal nerves supply penile skin sensation and lie within Buck's fascia. These nerves are notably absent at the 12 o'clock position.

Embryology of oesophageal atresia.

Esophageal atresia (OA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TOF) are important human birth defects of unknown etiology. The embryogenesis of OA/TOF remains poorly understood, mirroring the lack of clarity of the mechanisms of normal tracheoesophageal development. The development of rat and mouse models of OA/TOF has allowed the parallel study of both normal and abnormal embryogenesis. Although controversies persist, the fundamental morphogenetic process appears to be a rearrangement of the proximal foregut into separate respiratory (ventral) and gastrointestinal (dorsal) tubes. This process depends

Anorectal anatomy and embryology.

The anal canal is complex in its anatomy and its embryologic origin. The intricate and changing histology of the anal canal explains the different types of anal cancer. In addition, an understanding of the venous and the lymphatic drainage of the anal canal helps to explain its methods of dissemination. Finally, the basis for the treatment of anal cancer is derived from the cancer's anatomic origins.

Embryology of the sternum.

Development of the sternum during the growth of the embryo is described. Anterior body wall defects in the thoracic region may be severe, leading to ectopia cordis, or mild, as in skin-covered sternal clefts. The embryologic basis for other sternal abnormalities, such as pectus excavatum and pectus carniatum, is not clear; however, abnormalities of rib morphogenesis and growth are the most likely causes.

Embryology of the Orbit.

The orbit houses and protects the ocular globe and the supporting structures, and occupies a strategic position below the anterior skull base and adjacent to the paranasal sinuses. Its embryologic origins are inextricably intertwined with those of the central nervous system, skull base, and face. Although the orbit contains important contributions from four germ cell layers (surface ectoderm, neuroectoderm, neural crest, and mesoderm), a significant majority originate from the neural crest cells. The bones of the orbit, face, and anterior cranial vault are mostly neural crest in origin. The ma

Embryology of anorectal malformations.

Today, the normal and abnormal development of the hindgut is still a matter of speculation. However, as the result of recent studies in appropriate animal models, most embryologic events that finally lead to abnormal hindgut development are better known than in the past: (1) the process of maldevelopment starts in early embryonic stages; (2) the cloacal membrane is always too short in its dorsal part, thus, the dorsal cloaca is missing; and (3) as a result, the hindgut remains attached to the sinus urogenitalis, forming the recto-urethral fistula. In the past, an impaired process of septation

Embryology of the eye.

A brief description of the basic patterns of mammalian development of the eye is presented based on events as they occur in human beings. The emphasis is not on the details of this development, but rather on its organization and timing, with a figure of comparative development providing a comparison of similar events in man, rat, mouse, and chick.

Embryology of urinary incontinence.

Congenital incontinence may be divided into primary and secondary types. Primary incontinence refers to the development of a conduit which bypasses the normal sphincter mechanism, while secondary incontinence develops after a congenital outlet obstruction leads to bladder decompensation and overflow. The embryogenesis of the various forms of primary incontinence is described in detail and management is discussed.

The embryology of the diaphragm.

Despite the progress in prenatal diagnosis and intervention as well as postnatal therapeutic strategies, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is still associated with a meaningful mortality because of the induced pulmonary hypoplasia. An essential key in understanding the pathogenesis of CDH is the underlying embryology, which has been neglected during the last decades. Likewise, the development of the normal diaphragm is still poorly understood. Obsolescent perceptions, mainly formed from histologic sections, are still propagated. In this review we present an atlas of scanning electron micro

Embryology of the biliary tract.

A hepatic diverticulum appears in the ventral wall of the primitive midgut early in the 4th week of intrauterine life in the development of the human embryo. This small diverticulum is the anlage for the development of the liver, extrahepatic biliary ducts, gallbladder, and ventral pancreas. By the 5th week, all elements of the biliary tree are recognizable. Marked elongation of the common duct occurs with plugging of the lumen by epithelial cells. Recanalization of the lumen of the common duct starts at the end of the 5th week and moves slowly distally. By the 6th week, the common duct and ve

Embryology and epidemiology of microtia.

The auricle derives from six hillocks arising from the first and second branchial arches. Different hillocks give rise to different parts of the pinna. In the course of embryonic development, the auricle migrates postero-cranially as the mandible enlarges. Auricular malformations, such as microtia, are thought to be related to cell death of the first and second arch derivatives. The prevalence and characteristics of microtia vary in different populations. The prevalence ranges from 0.83 to 17.4 per 10,000. Microtia is more common in males, and right-sided dominance varies from 57 to 67%. The p

Embryology of myelomeningocele and anencephaly.

The authors review current views on of the embryogenesis of the neural tube defects (NTDs) myelomeningocele and anencephaly. In this context, the following four approaches to the study of NTDs are discussed: normal morphogenesis and timing of early human neural development from conception to the ascent of the conus medullaris; mechanical and molecular biology of neural tube closure derived from experimental and animal models; morphological and biomechanical features of the NTDs myelomeningocele and anencephaly; and the experimental evidence for the importance of both genetic and environmental

Embryology of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

It is still generally believed that the defect in congenital diaphragmatic hernia results from failure of the so-called pleuroperitoneal canals (PPCs) to close at the end of the embryonic period (8th gestational week). Furthermore, it is assumed that gut could enter the thoracic cavity through this defect, causing compression and finally hypoplasia of the lung. However, this sequence of embryological events has never been studied, and many details even of normal diaphragmatic development are still unknown. Using scanning electron microscopy and a new animal model of congenital diaphragmatic he

The embryology of testicular descent.

A description is given of the role of the gubernaculum testis in the migration of the testis from the intra-abdominal to the scrotal position. The morphological differences in the process between carnivores, ungulates and man on the one hand and rodents on the other are stressed. The importance of gubernacular outgrowth, gubernacular regression as well as the importance of intra-abdominal pressure is emphasized. The effects of some forms of abnormal gubernacular development on testicular descent are described. The hormonal factors possibly involved in the regulation of the gubernacular reactio
