Forty years of phylogenetic analysis have failed to resolve the relationships among the major groups of seed plants. From the fossil record, it is clear that more seed plant groups have gone extinct than are extant, though some direct ancestors of today's clades could have survived. Here, we reanalyze morphological matrices relevant to seed plants, applying two underutilized visualization tools: Networks for displaying incompatible phylogenetic signal and Romerograms (spindle diagrams) for depicting alternative relationships, suspected budding speciation, and surviving ancestors. Surviving anc

Phenolic compounds of land plants are varied: they are chemodiverse, are sourced from different biosynthetic routes and fulfil a broad spectrum of functions that range from signalling phytohormones, to protective shields against stressors, to structural compounds. Their action defines the biology of land plants as we know it. Often, their roles are tied to environmental responses that, however, impacted already the algal progenitors of land plants, streptophyte algae. Indeed, many streptophyte algae successfully dwell in terrestrial habitats and have homologues for enzymatic routes for the pro

The emergence of land plants from aquatic habitat over half a billion years ago marked a pivotal moment in Earth's history, profoundly altering both soil composition and atmospheric chemistry. This remarkable evolutionary transition was accompanied by the establishment of multiple signaling pathways that facilitated plant adaptation to terrestrial environments. Among these, signaling pathways based on myo-inositol-derived cellular messengers have recently gained significant attention. Combinatorial attachment of phosphate to the myo-inositol (hereafter inositol) ring produces a large array of

Pyrenoid-based CO2-concentrating mechanisms (pCCMs) turbocharge photosynthesis by saturating CO2 around Rubisco. Hornworts are the only land plants with a pCCM. Owing to their closer relationship to crops, hornworts could offer greater translational potential than the green alga Chlamydomonas, the traditional model for studying pCCMs. Here we report a thorough investigation of a hornwort pCCM using the emerging model Anthoceros agrestis. The pyrenoids in A. agrestis exhibit liquid-like properties similar to those in Chlamydomonas, but they differ by lacking starch sheaths and being enclosed by

One of life's decisive innovations was to harness the catalytic power of metals for cellular chemistry. With life's expansion, global atmospheric and biogeochemical cycles underwent dramatic changes. Although initially harmful, they permitted the evolution of multicellularity and the colonization of land. In land plants as primary producers, metal homeostasis faces heightened demands, in part because soil is a challenging environment for nutrient balancing. To avoid both nutrient metal limitation and metal toxicity, plants must maintain the homeostasis of metals within tighter limits than the

Nearly all modern animal phyla emerged 'suddenly' during the early Cambrian Period about 518 million years ago (Ma) in an event known as the Cambrian explosion. Following this evolutionary milestone, the marine invertebrate fossil record is punctuated by five major mass extinction events, collectively called the 'Big Five'. These events include the end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, end-Permian, end-Triassic, and end-Cretaceous mass extinctions (Figure 1). Among them, the end-Permian extinction was the most catastrophic event, resulting in the loss of approximately 81% of marine species within a s

RNA editing, a post-transcriptional modification in plant mitochondria and plastids, is essential for environmental adaptation and diverse physiological processes. Despite extensive identification of RNA editing factors, primarily including pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR), multiple organelle RNA editing factor (MORF), organelle RNA recognition motif-containing (ORRM), and organelle zinc finger (OZ) proteins, their evolutionary history remains poorly understood. Here, we perform kingdom-wide evolutionary analyses across 364 high-quality Archaeplastida genomes and find massive PPR gene expansions

The colonization of land by plants was a major transition in the history of life, fundamentally reshaping the evolution of terrestrial organisms and Earth's ecosystems. Plants are hosts to an enormous diversity of viruses, but the origins and evolution of these viruses are not thoroughly understood. In this study, we mined the transcriptomes and genomes of 2402 species sampled across the plant kingdom and discovered about 35 000 plant-associated RNA viruses, including several potential families not described previously, resulting in a 2.2-fold increase in the known plant-associated RNA virus d

Cuticular waxes are a complex mixture of long-chain aliphatic compounds, including alkanes, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, and esters, that cover the outer surface of most terrestrial plants. While cuticular waxes play a pivotal role in plant adaptation to various environmental stresses, the specific roles of individual molecular species, particularly wax esters (WEs), remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the evolution and function of wax ester biosynthesis in land plants, focusing on the WSD (wax synthase/DGAT) enzyme family. We demonstrate that the ancestral origin of WSD e

We discuss, from the aspect of phylogeny, the interrelationships of the phytolith types in plants from the main taxonomical groups (algae, lichens, horsetails, gymnosperms, and floral plants) with homologues of known proteins of biomineralization. Phytolith morphotypes in various phylogenetic plant domains have different shapes. We found that, in ancient types of plants (algae, horsetails, and gymnosperms), there are fewer different phytolith morphotypes compared to more modern plants (floral plants). The phytolith morphotypes in primitive plants are generally larger than the morphotypes in mo

The dehydration tolerance of photosynthetic tissues varies greatly along land plant's phylogeny. We investigated the photochemical response to severe dehydration and subsequent rehydration in 318 species representing the major terrestrial biomes and photosynthetic lineages: lichens, bryophytes, pteridophytes and spermatophytes. Using a standardized portable dehydration test with the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) as indicator, data meeting two key criteria were analyzed: (1) optimal physiological conditions before dehydration and (2) achieving relative water contents (RWC) be

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a phytohormone widely distributed among members of the land plant lineage (Embryophyta), regulating dormancy, stomata closure and tolerance to environmental stresses. In angiosperms (Magnoliophyta), ABA-induced gene expression is mediated by promoter elements such as the G-box-like ACGT-core motifs recognized by bZIP transcription factors. In contrast, the mode of regulation by ABA of gene expression in liverworts (Marchantiophyta), representing one of the earliest diverging land plant groups, has not been elucidated. In this study, we used promoters of the liverwort Mar

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins which play key roles in various biological processes, including cell signaling, pathogen recognition and development. Previous research conducted on ricin-B lectin domains and carbohydrate-binding modules of family 13 (CBM13) illustrated the striking resemblances between these two groups of protein domains. In this study, we report on the discovery, identification and putative biochemical characteristics of a ricin-B-like domain that is unique for GH27 enzymes from land plants, identified in the OsAPSE enzyme from Japanese rice (Oryza sativa L. subsp.

The NPR proteins function as salicylic acid (SA) receptors in Arabidopsis thaliana. AtNPR1 plays a central role in SA-induced transcriptional reprogramming whereby positively regulates SA-mediated defense. NPRs are found in the genomes of nearly all land plants. However, we know little about the molecular functions and physiological roles of NPRs in most plant species. We conducted phylogenetic and alignment analyses of NPRs from 68 species covering the significant lineages of land plants. To investigate NPR functions in bryophyte lineages, we generated and characterized NPR loss-of-function m

Little is known about the impacts of green spaces on pregnancy outcomes. The relationship between green space exposure and preeclampsia has never been studied. We used a hospital-based perinatal database including more than 80,000 births to study the relationships between greenness exposure and three pregnancy outcomes: birth weight in term born infants, preterm deliveries and preeclampsia. Greenness was characterized using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) within circular buffers surrounding maternal homes. Analyses were conducted using generalized estimating equations, adjust

Four new aromatic butenolides, asperimides A-D (1-4), together with a known analogue, butyrolactone I (5), were isolated from solid cultures of a tropical endophytic fungus Aspergillus terreus. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds 1-4 represent the first examples of butenolides with a maleimide core isolated from Aspergillus sp. Inhibitory effects of the isolated compounds on nitric oxide production were investigated in lipopolysaccaride (LPS)-mediated RAW 264.7 cells. Compounds 3 and 4

The Domain of unknown function 506 (DUF506) family, which belongs to the PD-(D/E)XK nuclease superfamily, has not been functionally characterized. In this study, 266 DUF506 domain-containing genes were identified from algae, mosses, and land plants showing their wide occurrence in photosynthetic organisms. Bioinformatics analysis identified 211 high-confidence DUF506 genes across 17 representative land plant species. Phylogenetic modeling classified three groups of plant DUF506 genes that suggested functional preservation among the groups based on conserved gene structure and motifs. Gene dupl

Absence of a drug that kills adult filarial parasites remains the major challenge in eliminating human lymphatic filariasis (LF); the second leading cause of long-term and permanent disability. Thus, the discovery of novel antifilarial natural products with potent adulticidal activity is an urgent need. In the present study, methanol extracts of leaves, bark and winged seeds of Dipterocarpus zeylanicus (Dipterocarpaceae) were investigated for macro and microfilaricidal activity. Two antifilarial triterpene saponins were isolated from winged seed extracts by bioactivity guided chromatographic s
