Cancer morbidity of professional emergency responders in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Many professional emergency responders (ERs) who belong to the Korean National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have been cross-trained and serve multiple roles. As such, firefighters and other ERs in Korea are exposed to similar occupational hazards. This study was conducted to estimate cancer morbidity in male ERs and compare that with Korean men. METHODS: The cohort was comprised of 33,416 male ERs working between 1980 and 2007, who were alive on December 31, 1995. Work histories were merged with the Korea National Central Cancer Registry (KNCCR) to assess cancer morbidity be

Acute pesticide-related illness among emergency responders, 1993-2002.

BACKGROUND: Emergency responders are among the first to arrive at a pesticide-related release event. Magnitude, severity, and risk factor information on acute pesticide poisoning among those workers is needed. METHODS: Survey data collected from the SENSOR-Pesticides, CDPR and HSEES programs between 1993 and 2002 from 21 states were reviewed. Acute occupational pesticide-related illness incidence rates for each category of emergency responder were calculated, as were incidence rate ratios (IRR) among emergency responders compared to all other workers employed in non-agricultural industries.

Protecting Emergency Responders with Evidence-Based Interventions (PEREI): protocol for a randomized controlled trial for early career emergency responders, significant others, and supervisors.

Background: Emergency service personnel perform roles associated with high levels of trauma exposure and stress, and not surprisingly experience greater risk for poor mental health including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance use relative to the general population. Although programs exist to minimise the risk of developing mental health problems, their efficacy to date has been limited or untested. We will test the efficacy of the three programs which form PEREI: Protecting Emergency Responders with Evidence-Based Interventions. PEREI consists of modified

How Hazards Turn Into Disasters: Perspectives of Emergency Responders.

Natural hazards like floods, storms, or earthquakes turn into disasters if they hit vulnerable communities and societies. In policy and academia, this understanding has led to a surge of models and risk reduction policies that aim to reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience. However, it remains unclear which vulnerabilities are the most important, and what stakeholders in different contexts prioritize. To address this gap, this article identifies critical exposure, vulnerability, and coping capacity factors, elicits their priority among emergency responders from different contexts, and a

Emergency Medical Responders and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Because of the high prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and wandering behavior, emergency medical responders (EMRs) will likely encounter children and adolescents with ASD. The objectives were to describe interactions between EMRs and children and adolescents with ASD, to evaluate EMRs' ability to recognize ASD in a simulated trauma setting, and to determine if EMRs' demographic characteristics affected their interactions with ASD youth. METHODS: A study of 75 videos of a simulated school bus crash was performed. The simulation included an adolescent with ASD portrayed by

Burdens on emergency responders after a terrorist attack in Berlin.

BACKGROUND: Terrorist attacks induce various responses in emergency responders. Addressing this range of responses in individual workers is of central interest. AIMS: To assess the gender- and occupation-specific effects of a terrorist attack, particularly in emergency responders. METHODS: This was a pilot study. Emergency responders present during the 2016 terrorist attack at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin were asked to participate. Measures for crisis management had been previously implemented. Blood pressure in firefighters, police officers, and other emergency responders.

Elevated blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Increased risk begins in the prehypertensive range and increases further with higher pressures. The strenuous duties of emergency responders (firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel) can interact with their personal risk profiles, including elevated blood pressure, to precipitate acute cardiovascular events. Approximately three-quarters of emergency responders have prehypertension or hypertension, a proportion which is expected to increase, based on the obesity epide

Recognizing and responding to hyperglycaemic emergencies.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) are both diabetic emergencies associated with hyperglycaemia and can be fatal if healthcare professionals fail to recognize and intervene appropriately. While many students and qualified nurses may be able to recall common signs and symptoms related to DKA and HHS - for example polyuria, polydipsia and elevated blood sugars - understanding the physiological mechanisms behind abnormal observations and restoring homeostasis through appropriate management is far more complex. Health educators can play a significant role in co

A Systematic Review of Workplace Violence Against Emergency Medical Services Responders.

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responders deliver patient care in high-risk, high-stress, and highly variable scenarios. This unpredictable work environment exposes EMS responders to many risks, one of which is violence. The primary goals of this systematic literature review were to (1) define the issue of violence experienced by EMS responders and (2) identify the risk factors of violence associated with the EMS profession. An innovative inclusion of industrial literature with traditional peer-reviewed literature was performed. Of 387 articles retrieved, 104 articles were assessed and review

ChatGPT's competence in responding to urological emergencies.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) applications have been increasingly used as sources of medical information, alongside their applications in many other fields. This study is the first to evaluate ChatGPT's performance in addressing urological emergencies (UE). METHODS: The study included frequently asked questions (FAQs) by the public regarding UE, as well as UE-related questions formulated based on the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines. The FAQs were selected from questions posed by patients to doctors and hospital accounts on social media platforms (F

Assessing and responding to anxiety and panic in the Emergency Department.

Anxiety and panic symptoms are widespread in the general population. The physical manifestations of anxiety and panic commonly account for people presenting to Emergency Departments (EDs). It is therefore important for ED clinicians to be informed of the numerous causes of anxiety and panic and equipped to respond effectively. This paper describes the underlying pathophysiology of the physical symptoms of anxiety and panic and differential diagnoses to consider. Organic conditions that are associated with symptoms of anxiety and panic are highlighted. Brief interventions are tabled for ED clin

Empowering Emergency Responders to Treat on Scene Alleviates Hospital Strain During Disaster Events.

Disasters often lead to increased generator use, resulting in carbon monoxide poisonings (COP) and burn injuries that can overwhelm regional burn centers. Following Hurricane Ida, emergency medical services (EMS) providers in southeastern Louisiana were empowered to treat minor COP and burn injuries on the scene without hospital transport. This study evaluated the impact of that policy. Using EMS and Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN) data, we analyzed EMS calls from 3 periods surrounding Hurricane Ida's landfall on August 29, 2021: pre-Ida (07/08-08/25), mid-Ida (08/26-09/08), and po

Occupational cooling practices of emergency first responders in the United States: A survey.

Despite extensive documentation directed specifically toward mitigating thermal strain of first responders, we wished to ascertain the degree to which first responders applied cooling strategies, and what opinions are held by the various agencies/departments within the United States. An internet-based survey of first responders was distributed to the International Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Fire Firefighters, National Bomb Squad Advisory Board and the USA Interagency Board and their subsequent departments and branches. Individual first responder departments were q

Association between obstructive sleep apnea and hearing loss among a cohort of emergency responders.

PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and OSA severity are associated with sensorineural hearing loss (HL) among emergency responders. METHODS: We evaluated two independent variables: OSA risk, categorized using Berlin Questionnaire criteria, and OSA severity, determined by polysomnogram (PSG) apnea-hypopnea indices (AHI). Logistic regression, adjusted for confounders, was used to assess the association between each OSA exposure and the outcome of HL among a cohort of emergency responders. RESULTS: The study cohort included 13,909 participants with au

Emergency and crisis management: critical incident stress management for first responders and business organisations.

A literature review was performed on critical incident stress after September 11th, 2001 (9/11), and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which focused on the need to implement a holistic critical incident stress management programme for first responders and business organisations. Critical incident stress management is required to handle acute stress and other distress in the face of natural or man-made disasters, including terrorist attacks. A holistic approach to community resilience through a well-planned and implemented critical incident stress management programme has been shown in the literatur

Emergency Medical Service Responders' Perspectives on Transgender, Intersexual, and Non-Binary Patients in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Gender minorities, including transgender, intersexual and non-binary (TIN) individuals, are at risk of receiving suboptimal care in emergency departments due to clinicians' limited knowledge and formal training in TIN-specific needs. Little evidence is available regarding emergency medical service (EMS) responders, including paramedics (EMT-P), emergency medical technicians (EMT) ,and prehospital emergency physicians (EP). Therefore, in this study we aimed to explore the experiences and knowledge, attitudes, and education/training needs of EMS professionals in Germany regarding t

Unmasking the divide: Musculoskeletal injury and physical fitness disparities among military and emergency responders.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKi) are a burden on military, first responder, and health care personnel. Military and emergency services populations are often grouped together in research, but direct comparison of physical fitness or injuries of these groups has not been conducted for females. Moreover, interactions among parity status, occupation, and injury history with respect to physical fitness have not been explored. METHODS: Fifty-seven female firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, or health care providers (non-military [NM]) and 90 female Canadian Armed Forces

Functional versus conventional strength and conditioning programs for back injury prevention in emergency responders.

Back pain and back-related injuries are common complaints among emergency responders. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two strength and conditioning programs in improving back muscle characteristics and disabilities in emergency responders (firefighters/paramedics). Participants (n = 24) were randomized into two groups to complete 16 weeks of supervised exercise intervention: 1) Functional training used unilateral movements that mimicked the asymmetrical nature of emergency operations, 2) Conventional training performed bilaterally loaded exercises. Outcome measure
