Unplanned Emergency Room Visits following Hip Arthroscopy.

PURPOSE: Hip arthroscopy is an increasingly common orthopedic procedure. Although the number of reported complications is low, emergency room visits in the early postoperative period do occur. This study aims to evaluate the impact of demographic, insurance, and clinical factors on the likelihood of postoperative emergency department (ED) visits following hip arthroscopy. Through the identification of key risk factors, including insurance status, comorbidities, and procedural specifics, the objective of this study is to inform clinical practices and enhance patient outcomes through targeted ri

Repeat emergency room visits for hand and wrist injuries.

PURPOSE: To characterize patients with hand or wrist injuries presenting to our university-based emergency department (ED) after a previous evaluation by an outside ED. We hypothesized that a majority of these patients did not require emergent care, most arrived during working hours, and a disproportionate number were uninsured. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 3,047 orthopedic hand consults from 2002 to 2010. Patients were included if our ED was the patient's second ED evaluation within 30 days for the same complaint. Demographics, diagnosis, referral instructions from the initial instit

Emergency room visits and readmissions after pediatric urologic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Reducing readmissions has become a focal point to increase quality of care while reducing costs. We report all-cause unplanned return visits following urologic surgery in children at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children undergoing urology procedures with returns within 30 days of surgery were identified. Patient demographics, insurance status, type of surgery, and reason for return were assessed. RESULTS: Four thousand and ninety-seven pediatric urology surgeries were performed at our institution during 2012, with 106 documented unplanned returns (2.59%). Mean time fro

[Emergency room visits by patients with exacerbations of asthma].

We retrospectively analyzed patterns of emergency room visits by patients with exacerbations of asthma from December 1995 through November 1996. A total of 591 episodes in 198 patients were reviewed. The average age was 35.8 years, ranging from 15 to 71. The largest number of visits occurred in September. The number of visits per year ranged from 1 to 22; the mean was 2.9 per year. In patients who were followed on a regular basis at our institution, serve attacks accounted for 7.1% of the total, compared with 21.6 percent at other hospitals or outpatient clinics. We suspect that this differenc

Predictors of Frequent Emergency Room Visits among a Homeless Population.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness, HIV, and substance use are interwoven problems. Furthermore, homeless individuals are frequent users of emergency services. The main purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for frequent emergency room (ER) visits and to examine the effects of housing status and HIV serostatus on ER utilization. The second purpose was to identify risk factors for frequent ER visits in patients with a history of illicit drug use. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 412 patients enrolled in a Boston-based health care for the homeless program (HCH). This study p

The effect of high ambient temperature on emergency room visits.

BACKGROUND: The association between temperature and mortality has been widely researched, although the association between temperature and morbidity has been less studied. We examined the association between mean daily apparent temperature and emergency room (ER) visits in California. METHODS: We used a time-stratified case-crossover design, restricting our data to the warm seasons of 2005-2008 in 16 climate zones. The study population included cases residing within 10 km of meteorologic monitors. Conditional logistic regression models with apparent temperature were applied by climate zone; t

Ozone: a trigger for hospital pediatric asthma emergency room visits.

A time-series study was carried out in Paris from January 1 to December 31, 1988 with the aim of investigating the association between urban air pollution and daily emergency room visits for asthma in a pediatric hospital. Levels of black smoke, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone were monitored throughout the study area, and meteorological data were collected. Influenza epidemics and pollen periods were identified. Health data were collected from a pediatric hospital emergency room. Case definition of asthma attacks was based on clinical diagnosis. Children were included in the study

Psychological factors associated with emergency room visits among asthmatic patients.

This study was designed to investigate physiological and psychological characteristics of subjects with high-frequency emergency room (ER) visits. Asthma status, psychological functioning and predispositions, psychosocial adaptation to asthma, and health behaviors were measured for 30 patients who had two or more ER visits during the last 2 years. These subjects were matched for age, sex, and corticosteroid use with 30 subjects who had no unscheduled ER visits for the same period. No significant differences were found for measures of asthma status. Among the asthma-specific variables, the numb

Emergency room visits by pediatric fracture patients treated with cast immobilization.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this review was to determine when and why pediatric patients with cast complaints return to the emergency room (ER). If this could be determined, educational and treatment strategies may help decrease the number of these visits and the cost of care. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients initially seen in a busy urban pediatric orthopaedic clinic identified those who had an ER visit because of a cast-related problem over a 5-year period. Patients were included only if they were seen for their initial visit and cast application in our fracture clinic. RESUL

Predicting emergency room visits and hospitalizations among hospice patients with cardiac disease.

BACKGROUND: One goal of quality palliative care in hospice is to limit emergency room visits and/or hospitalizations (ERVH). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine predisposing factors that contribute to ERVH and devise a model to predict the probability of hospice cardiac disease patients having ERVH after hospice admission. METHODS: The study was a retrospective chart review of hospice cardiac patients comparing those with ERVH (n = 65) and those who died in their homes (n = 80). Data reduction strategy included bivariate tests and model-building analyses using logistic regres
