Can glutathione-containing emollients inactivate methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone?

Many persons are exposed to preservatives/biocides based on methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI), since toiletries and cosmetics, as well as products/water-based systems used occupationally, may all contain MCI/MI. In toiletries and cosmetics, the MCI/MI concentration is often below 15 ppm (0.0015%). In some industries, workers handle high concentrations of MCI/MI, which can cause chemical burns and induce sensitization if skin is exposed. Contact allergy to MCI/MI is common and reports on chemical burns have been published. Thus, there is a need for prevention of skin di

The use of emollients as sophisticated therapy in dermatology.

Emollients are agents designed to make the stratum corneum softer and more plant by increasing its hydration. A large number of preparations are available today, many of which are marketed as cosmetic and therapeutic moisturizers. They are the most prescribed products in dermatology. Their structure and function are surprisingly complex and sophisticated, and many are equidistant between cosmetics and drugs. The use of the emollients corrects the problems in scaling disorders. It is well known that the electrical properties of the stratum corneum change after application of an emollient. It is

Emollients to Prevent Eczema in High-Risk Infants: Integrative Review.

METHODS: Searches were conducted in September 2021 in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science using key word search terms dermatitis, atopic, emollients, petrolatum, and infant, newborn. Inclusion criteria were articles written in English published between 2010 and 2021 that tested emollients in high-risk infants and measured the development of AD. RESULTS: Eight primary research articles were included. Six studies were limited by small sample sizes, short-term application of emollients, and short-term follow-up. These studies generated inconclusive results. Two large randomized

Thermal effects of emollients on facial skin in the cold.

Ointments are traditionally used in Finland for protection against facial frostbite. Recent epidemiological reports showed unexpectedly, however, that the use of ointments is a statistically considerable risk factor for frostbite of the face and ears. The effects of 4 different emollients on facial temperature were studied in 46 acute cold exposures. The voluntary test persons sat in a cold chamber after emollients were applied thickly on half of the face, while the other half acted as an untreated control. Thermistors and an infrared scanner were used to measure skin temperature of symmetrica

Medilan: a hypoallergenic lanolin for emollient therapy.

Lanolin has been used for thousands of years for its emollient properties. For the past two decades it has had an ill-deserved reputation as an important sensitizer. Medilan is an ultra-purified hypoallergenic medical grade lanolin that has been shown to cause almost zero sensitization. As well as its occlusive properties it has also been shown to penetrate the skin and help to store water in the stratum corneum. The hypoallergenic nature of Medilan combined with its soothing and hydrating properties make it a valuable ingredient in emollient preparations used to treat eczema and other dry ski

Mohs surgeons' use of topical emollients in postoperative wound care.

BACKGROUND: Although there is no universally accepted topical emollient recommended for wound care, there has been a trend toward minimizing exposure to common culprits of allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: To assess the current practices of postoperative emollient use of dermatologic surgeons. METHODS AND MATERIALS: An anonymous 10-question survey on postoperative emollient use for clean surgical wounds was e-mailed to 857 members of the American College of Mohs Surgery. RESULTS: Two hundred ninety-four members (34.3%) responded. After routine closure, the most commonly used topical e

Use of emollients in the treatment of dry skin conditions.

Dry skin conditions are often not considered important by health professionals, and as a consequence treatments are frequently under-prescribed. As a result of this, problems with untreated dry skin can lead to a variety of issues. Conditions such as pruritus and ichthyosis vulgaris can be distressing, while ezcema and psoriasis can lead to more serious consequences such as fissures and infections and can result in a reduced quality of life and social isolation. However, with appropriate treatments such as emollient therapy, the incidences of these conditions occurring can be reduced. Despite

The management of dry skin with topical emollients--recent perspectives.

Dry skin (xerosis) is a common symptom of a number of chronic skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, but can also be caused by environmental factors, such as cold weather and frequent showering. The condition can cause unsightliness of the skin, discomfort, itching, and can have a negative impact on patients' quality of life. This article will cover recent developments in the understanding of xerosis and its management with emollients. The stratum corneum consists of corneocytes and lipid-enriched intercellular bilayers. These are both produced from keratinocytes in a process called epiderm

Study of Skin Barrier Function in Psoriasis: The Impact of Emollients.

Psoriasis is a chronic multi-systemic inflammatory disease that affects the epidermal barrier. Emollients can be used as a coadjutant therapy for psoriasis management, but little is known about how the epidermal barrier function in psoriatic patients is modified by moisturizers. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Vaseline jelly and a water-based formula on epidermal barrier function in psoriatic patients. Thirty-one patients with plaque-type psoriasis and thirty-one gender and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Temperature, transepidermal water loss

Skin barrier function and the use of emollients in dermatological nursing.

Nurses will be observing the skin on a daily basis while caring for their patients. Many may appear to have a dry skin or have a skin disease with dryness being the presenting feature in conditions such as atopic eczema, contact dermatitis (irritant and allergic) psoriasis and the ichthyoses. This article explores the barrier function of the skin, factors which influence skin barrier function and the use of emollients for dry skin and skin conditions.

Skin barrier breakdown: a renaissance in emollient therapy.

Breakdown of the skin barrier is the first event in the development of atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis). Research over the past five years has indicated that this arises as a result of the interaction of environmental agents such as soap and other detergents with the products of changes in several genes. These genetic changes predispose to the breakdown of the skin barrier, which allows the penetration of allergens, triggering a flare of atopic eczema. This new understanding of how breakdown of the skin barrier is the first event in the development of atopic eczema provides a rationale for a

Acute irritant reaction to an antiseptic bath emollient.

Antiseptic bath emollients are commonly prescribed for treatment of eczema and are generally safe for frequent application. Although acute irritant reactions are uncommon it is nevertheless recognised and could have significant morbidity. This case describes a young male patient who developed an acute irritant reaction localised to the external genitalia, mimicking Fournier's gangrene, after overnight application of Oilatum Plus antiseptic bath emollients.

Emollients for preventing atopic eczema: Cost-effectiveness analysis of the BEEP trial.

BACKGROUND: Recent discoveries have led to the suggestion that enhancing skin barrier from birth might prevent eczema and food allergy. OBJECTIVE: To determine the cost-effectiveness of daily all-over-body application of emollient during the first year of life for preventing atopic eczema in high-risk children at 2 years from a health service perspective. We also considered a 5-year time horizon as a sensitivity analysis. METHODS: A within-trial economic evaluation using data on health resource use and quality of life captured as part of the BEEP trial alongside the trial data. Parents/carer

Contact haptens in emollients marketed in two European countries (Poland and Spain).

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common skin disease among pediatric patients, which affects up to 20% of children worldwide. Characterized by pruritus and eczema, it is also associated with improper skin barrier function and allergen sensitization. Here, we aimed to assess the presence of haptens in emollients marketed in two European countries: in Poland and Spain, as, firstly, these products are considered to be AD's basic therapy, and, secondly, frequent application of potent sensitizers on atopic skin may result in contact dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS:
