In clarifying that Spinoza is not the first person to share insights about the necessity of a contrary, strong emotion in transforming an emotion, the present article focuses on expounding this perspective as embedded in the classical texts of Chinese medicine, along with illustrative examples of emotion-focused therapy in the historical case records of Chinese master physicians. Key features of this kind of emotion-focused therapy include (1) designing a new scenario that provides the client with an embodied alternate experience in the real world, thereby eliciting a strong emotion capable of

Emotions are the central process of motivation and play a key role in adaptive behavior in humans. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy stresses the importance of changing both cognition and behavior, there is growing emphasis on direct therapeutic work on emotions and emotional processing, as problematic emotional processes are at the core of nearly all psychic disorders. This type of work is the goal of emotion-focused psychotherapy, which centers on direct change of problematic emotions, especially those which are usually suppressed resp. overregulated by the patient. This paper examines t

Among psychological therapies for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), cognitive-behavioral therapy has a dominant position as the most studied therapy. However, some researchers have recommended that to increase treatment options and broaden choice for clients, non-cognitive-behavioral therapy models for GAD should be examined. The present study was an exploratory study, assessing pre-post outcomes and 6-month follow-up of emotion-focused therapy for GAD, supplemented by qualitative posttherapy client accounts of helpful and unhelpful aspects of therapy and changes reported since therapy start

This study provides outcome pilot data for an outpatient emotion-focused therapy group for 12 women with DSM-IV diagnoses of binge-eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorder not otherwise specified. The emotion-focused therapy group involved 16 weekly sessions that targeted problematic emotions connected to eating disorder symptoms. Semi-structured clinical interviews were conducted pre- and post-treatment and self-report questionnaires were administered. From pre- to post-treatment, changes in binge eating and scores on self-report measures were statistically significant. Participan

OBJECTIVE: Poor outcome cases in psychotherapy are prevalent, costly, and understudied. In this study, we wanted to contribute to a better understanding of poor outcome cases in Emotion-Focused Therapy by doing an in-depth exploratory analysis of therapist and client contributions.
METHODS: Six cases drawn from a randomized clinical study on depression were selected and analyzed using both quantitative process measures, self-report measures, and qualitative investigations. We investigated the working alliance, clients' emotional processing qualities, therapist adherence in applying the model,

OBJECTIVES: To better understand how case formulations are developed in client-therapist interactions, we investigated examples to identify the implicit defining characteristics of CFW and therapist response modes (TRMs) present in them.
METHOD: Using recordings of well-known EFT therapists, we extracted all examples of CFW by client and therapist, applying open-ended qualitative process-description to identify their implicit defining characteristics. This was followed by coding TRMs used.
RESULTS: We found five defining features of collaborative CFW for therapist and client: reflective (vs.

Objective: This study examined purported change mechanisms in emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety disorder. Methods: The sample included nine clients who had participated in a multiple-baseline case study trial examining the efficacy of emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Multilevel analyses were conducted to examine the trajectories of emotions over the course of treatment, and whether primary adaptive emotions in a given session predicted levels of SAD symptoms, self-criticism, and self-reassurance over the course of the following week. Results: Findings showed

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia-difficulty identifying and expressing emotions-is positively correlated with multiple psychiatric disorders and complicates psychotherapy, yet remains under-addressed.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a prototype for a clinician-linked digital Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) called Unlexi, a homework-style model.
METHODS: We developed the prototype with eligibility excluding acute states and requiring TAS-20 ≥ 51 with Readiness for Therapy Questionnaire screening. In the prototype, 12 weekly EFT modules are delivered with brief felt-sense pauses and a safety "Pause" triggering. NL

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of emotion-focused therapy (EFT) for adults suffering from social anxiety disorder (SAD).
METHOD: Using a nonconcurrent multiple-baseline design, 12 patients (mean age = 26.75 years, SD = 5.15; 7 males) meeting criteria for SAD were treated with up to 28 sessions of EFT. EFT was based on an empathic relationship, 2-chair work for self-criticism, empty-chair work for unresolved feelings, and focusing. Patients were randomized to wait 4, 8, or 12 weeks between the intake and the first therapy session. Intake assessment inc

OBJECTIVE: Despite an increasing recognition of the relevance and significance of self-compassion processes, little research has explored interventions that seek to enhance these in therapy. In this study, we examined the compassionate self-soothing task of emotion-focused therapy involving two-chair work, with seven clients.
METHOD: Conversation analysis was used to examine client-therapst interaction.
RESULTS: The analysis yielded a detailed description of interactional practices and processes involved in the accomplishment of self-soothing, drawing on Goffman's concept of the participatio

This study evaluated and compared emotion-focused therapy for trauma (EFTT) with imaginal confrontation (IC) of perpetrators (n=20) and EFTT with empathic exploration (EE) of trauma material (n=25). Clients were women and men with histories of different types of childhood maltreatment (emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; emotional neglect). Clients were randomly assigned to treatment condition. Outcome measures assessed symptom distress, self and interpersonal problems, and abuse resolution. Results indicated statistically and clinically significant improvements on eight measures at posttes

Difficulties with emotion regulation are a core feature of anxiety disorders (ADs) in children and adults. Interventions with a specific focus on emotion regulation are gaining empirical support. Yet, no studies to date have compared the relative efficacy of such interventions to existing evidence-based treatments. Such comparisons are necessary to determine whether emotion-focused treatments might be more effective for youth exhibiting broad emotion-regulation difficulties at pretreatment. This study examined an emotion-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (ECBT) protocol in comparison to tra

BACKGROUND: While the effects of psychotherapy methods are being intensively researched, little is known about the clinical and neurobiological effects of specific psychotherapeutic interventions. This study examines the effects of experiential emotion-focused and cognitive interventions in schema therapy on emotion regulation in borderline personality disorder.
METHODS: In a randomized, single-blinded, parallel group design, clinical effects and effects on resting-state functional connectivity in neural emotion regulation networks and neurotransmitter metabolism (Glx/GABA) in key regions of

OBJECTIVES: This paper presents a randomized controlled trial on assimilative integration, which is aimed at integrating elements from other orientations within one approach to enrich its conceptual and practical repertoire. Elements from Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) were integrated into a form of cognitive behavior therapy: Psychological Therapy (PT). In one treatment condition, EFT was added to PT (+EFT) with the intent to enhance therapists' working with emotions. In the other condition, concepts and interventions based on the socialpsychological self-regulation approach were added to PT (

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of eating disorders (EDs) means that its treatment is approached from various perspectives, among which we find emotion-focused therapy (EFT). Therefore, the main objective of this systematic review was to know the effectiveness of EFT for eating disorders.
METHOD: A systematic review of PubMed, the Cochrane Library and the Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection was carried out without a time limit and in a population with an eating disorder diagnosis.
RESULTS: Eight studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria: (1) six studies treated the population with

This study investigated the characteristics of client-identified helpful events (n=29) in emotion-focused therapy for child abuse trauma (EFTT). Helpful events (HE) were identified on the Helpful Aspects of Therapy Questionnaire and in Post Therapy Interviews, located in video-taped therapy sessions, and compared to researcher-defined control events (CE) for each client. Results indicated a greater focus on childhood abuse (particularly during the imaginal confrontation procedure), higher levels of emotional arousal, and comparable alliance quality in HE compared to CE. HE contained deeper lev

Problematic self-criticism has been widely recognised as a transdiagnostic factor associated with a range of mental health disorders. Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) targets self-criticism primarily via two-chair dialogue for self-criticism, a core intervention within the approach. An increasing number of pre-post studies and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the effectiveness of EFT in reducing self-criticism. The present meta-analysis synthesised existing quantitative studies utilising EFT to reduce self-criticism and evaluated its overall effectiveness across study designs. Fo

This single-arm, repeated measures study investigated the impact caregiver trauma history may have on treatment response following an intensive, 2-day Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) caregiver workshop. Caregivers (n = 243) completed questionnaires regarding their child's emotion regulation and clinical symptoms, as well as their own childhood trauma history (i.e., exposure to various forms of child maltreatment), caregiver self-efficacy and caregiver blocks (e.g., fears) to support their child's treatment and recovery. Questionnaires were administered prior to and immediately following
