Empirical classification of emotional adjustment reactions.

The validity of a diagnostic classification scheme for the emotional adjustment reactions of children is tested, and empirical findings are offered in support of a descriptive approach to classification. Results validate clinical observations of four types of children commonly seen for emotional adjustment reactions. Further research is proposed to develop instruments for personality assessment that would be sensitive to these categories.

Emotional and cognitive adjustment in abused children.

Research on the impact of maltreatment on children has increased in the last years, as there is a need to design appropriate treatment strategies. Social, cognitive, and emotional areas may be affected in these children. This research is aimed to study the psychological functioning of child victims, particularly in their emotional and cognitive adjustment. Nineteen children (10.3 years old) with case histories of at least 2 years of physical and emotional parental abuse and a group of 26 nonmaltreated children (9.4 years old) matched in socio-economic characteristics and coming from the same c

Emotional adjustment in compensated head injury patients.

Patterns of emotional adjustment based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were examined in a group of 124 patients who had suffered head injuries, reported postconcussional symptoms, and were receiving compensation. Cluster analytical procedures were used to identify subgroups. The sample was divided into two equivalent groups for purposes of crossvalidation. The results of the analyses in the two samples yielded similar patterns. Within each subgroup, the groups differed on the level and pattern of emotional disturbance. Approximately 65% of the sample had normal profil

The emotional adjustment of children with Tourette's syndrome.

We investigated the predictive value of family reaction and illness severity with respect to the emotional adjustment of Tourette's syndrome patients. The subjects included 30 children with Tourette's syndrome and 30 control subjects matched on age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status. The predictor variables included the child's perception of parental behavior, family adaptability as perceived by the mother, mother's self-concept, and illness severity. The results indicated that the children's perceptions of their parents' behavior explained the most variance in children's self-concepts and a

Emotional Adjustment in Children with Vocal Fold Nodules.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal fold nodules (VNs) in children are benign, bilateral, callous-like lesions at the junction of the anterior third and posterior two-thirds of the true vocal folds. Chronic, repetitive, and intense vocal behavior is often cited as the primary etiology; however, difficulties with emotional adjustment may predispose some children towards extreme and possibly phonotraumatic vocal activity, thereby contributing secondarily to the development of VNs. OBJECTIVES: This case-control study examined the association between features of emotional adjustment and VNs in children. METHODS

Resolving relationship dissolution-What predicts emotional adjustment after breakup?

Relationship dissolution is a critical life event individuals have to cope with. Factors like relationship duration and relationship quality or having a new partner are likely to affect how people recover emotionally from a separation, which is linked to long-term adjustment. However, prospective evidence on the role of these factors is scarce. Hence, this study aims to investigate predictors of emotional recovery following relationship dissolution. Pooled data of the German Family Panel pairfam on 3734 separation events of 2709 individuals aged 18 to 48 were used, applying a statistical model

Assessment of pragmatic difficulties and socio-emotional adjustment in practice.

BACKGROUND: In professional practice, psychologists and other professionals such as therapists and teachers receive referrals of many children who present with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties that are difficult to understand and assess. The problems of some of these children may stem from pragmatic difficulties in communication. This paper reports the results of a study on the use of checklists in professional practice to assist in the identification of these difficulties. AIMS: (1) To ascertain whether two checklists, Bishop's (1998) Children's Communication Checklist and Good

Attachment styles, emotion regulation, and adjustment in adolescence.

Attachment style differences in psychological symptomatology, self-concept, and risky or problem behaviors were examined in a community sample (N = 1,989) of Black and White adolescents, 13 to 19 years old. Overall, secure adolescents were the best-adjusted group, though not necessarily the least likely to engage in risky behaviors. Anxious adolescents were the worst-adjusted group, reporting the poorest self-concepts and the highest levels of symptomatology and risk behaviors. In contrast, avoidant adolescents reported generally high levels of symptomatology and poor self-concepts but similar

Maternal expressed emotion and adjustment in children with epilepsy.

Epilepsy in childhood may alter family relationships but the relevance of these changes for the increased rates of psychopathology has been little investigated. This study uses maternal expressed emotion (EE) to examine family relationships of children with epilepsy and the association with high risk for psychiatric disorder. EE was assessed using the Camberwell Family Interview carried out with the mothers of 22 schoolchildren with chronic epilepsy who were attending a general hospital outpatient clinic. Sixteen of these children had similarly aged healthy siblings who served as controls. Hig

Premorbid emotional and behavioural adjustment in children with mild head injuries.

This study investigated the hypothesis that children sustaining a mild closed head injury have a higher prevalence of premorbid behavioural problems than children in the general community. The prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems among children with a mild closed head injury was compared with the prevalence of problems in children with a severe closed head injury, children in the general community, and children referred to a psychiatric outpatient clinic. The results showed that the children with a mild head injury did not have significantly more premorbid emotional and behavioural

Longitudinal Analysis of Adolescent Adjustment: The Role of Attachment and Emotional Competence.

Emotional competencies as well as secure attachment relationships with peers are protective factors that facilitate psychological adjustment among adolescents. In this study, we will analyse how these socio-emotional factors influence adolescents' emotional symptoms, conduct problems and peer problems. The participants were 815 Spanish adolescents aged 12-17 years (M = 13.69; SD = 1.21) who completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Parent and Peer Attachment Inventory (IPPA) and the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ). Besides descriptive analyses, such

Preschool children's views on emotion regulation: Functional associations and implications for social-emotional adjustment.

Previous studies show that preschool children view negative emotions as susceptible to intentional control. However, the extent of this understanding and links with child social-emotional adjustment are poorly understood. To examine this, 62 3- and 4-year-olds were presented with puppet scenarios in which characters experienced anger, sadness, and fear. Forty-seven adults were presented with a parallel questionnaire. Participants rated the degree to which six emotion-regulation strategies were effective in decreasing negative emotions. Results showed that even the youngest preschoolers viewed

Interpersonal emotion regulation and emotional adjustment in adolescence: Directional associations and strategy-specific effects.

BACKGROUND: Previous theories and empirical studies suggest that interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) and specific IER strategies are closely linked to emotional adjustment. However, reciprocal associations among these constructs have rarely been examined while accounting for the temporal stability, and the existing evidence remains mixed. Using random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPM), this study examined within-person bidirectional associations between IER and emotional adjustment (depressive symptoms and life satisfaction) among Chinese early adolescents. This study then inves
