Prevalence of Emotional Exhaustion Among Respiratory Therapists.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory therapists (RTs) face high burnout risk, with rates as high as 79% reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that the rate of burnout has decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We performed a multi-center, multinational study between January 6 and February 1, 2025, evaluating the prevalence of RT burnout. Validated survey instruments were used to measure emotional exhaustion (burnout), incivility, intent to leave, and leadership. RESULTS: We received 1,033 responses (34% response rate). Seven hundred nineteen (70%) respondents were burned out, wi

Longitudinal effects of emotional labour on emotional exhaustion and dedication of teachers.

A great number of teachers find teaching fulfilling and are dedicated to it, but others feel emotionally exhausted, indicating that the interaction with pupils can be emotionally demanding. Emotional labor was shown to play an important role for the health of teachers. In a full two-wave longitudinal study over the period of 1 year, the effect of emotional labor on emotional exhaustion and dedication of 102 teachers was investigated. Teachers who were able to influence their emotions to feel the emotion appropriate in a situation (so called deep acting) felt significantly less emotionally exha

Determinants of Emotional Exhaustion in Nurses During Crises.

BACKGROUND: Research on emotional exhaustion (EE) among Lebanese registered nurses (RNs) during the COVID-19 pandemic is lacking, despite the extensive literature addressing EE within the healthcare workforce. This study explores the relationships between EE, self-confidence in learning (SCL), coping strategies, and perceived organizational support (POS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study analyzed a convenience sample of 82 RNs in medium-to-large acute care settings providing direct COVID-19 patient care. Data were gathered through an online survey that measured sociodemographic, SCL, POS, cop

Counselor emotional exhaustion and turnover intention in therapeutic communities.

Counselor turnover is a significant problem facing substance abuse treatment agencies. Understanding the role of organizational culture in predicting burnout and turnover intention may yield important information on how to address turnover in treatment organizations. Using data collected from 817 counselors employed in a national sample of 253 therapeutic communities (TCs), structural equation modeling was used to estimate the associations between emotional exhaustion, turnover intention, and three measures of organizational culture: centralized decision making, distributive justice, and proce

Association between Emotional Exhaustion and Tobacco Consumption in Teachers.

Teachers have been reported as having high levels of emotional exhaustion (EE). It has also been observed that tobacco consumption (TC) is higher during stressful events. However, there is little evidence about the association between EE and TC among teachers. A total of n = 560 teachers took part in this study, where 71.79% (n = 402) were women. For data gathering, the EE dimension of the Maslach Inventory for teachers was used, along with a TC questionnaire and the sociodemographic data of the participants. A binary logistical regression model was used for statistical analysis. Regarding TC,

What Characterizes Employees with Emotional Exhaustion and Employees with Work Overload?

Emotional exhaustion has been discussed as a major contributor to work ability problems, with substantial economic, individual, and social consequences. Research largely focuses on specific professions and sometimes overlooks that exhaustion and work overload problems are partly distinct. This study uses a differential analysis to explore working conditions and individual characteristics in employees with emotional exhaustion or perceived work overload, aiming to identify potential common risk factors. A representative German cross-sectional sample of 2289 employees aged 15-67, working at leas

Evidence-based practice implementation and staff emotional exhaustion in children's services.

Understanding the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in community service settings is critical for the successful translation of research to practice. However, we have limited research evidence about the impact of EBP implementation on the mental health and social service workforce. In a previous study we demonstrated reduced staff turnover where an EBP was implemented with fidelity monitoring in the form of supportive ongoing supervision and consultation. Other research has shown that staff burnout and emotional exhaustion in particular is associated with poor quality of care and

Relationships between nurses' experiences of workplace violence, emotional exhaustion and patient safety.

BACKGROUND: The rising rate of workplace violence in hospitals is a serious concern. While leading organisations recommend implementing interventions to address workplace violence, little is known about the workplace violence relationship between patients and visitors, and how it affects nurses' emotional exhaustion and their perceptions of patient safety. AIMS: The study's purpose was to understand the status of workplace violence in hospitals and the relationships between nurses' experiences of workplace violence, emotional exhaustion, and perceptions of patient safety. METHODS: This cross

Workplace Bullying, Emotional Exhaustion, and Partner Social Undermining: A Weekly Diary Study.

Workplace bullying is one of the most relevant social stressors at work. Although previous research has shown its negative consequences for health and well-being, scarce evidence about the short-term consequences of workplace bullying and its crossover effects on the home domain is available. Thus, we conducted a multisource weekly diary study. A sample of 124 employees and their spouses filled a general survey (baseline measures) and a weekly online survey for four consecutive weeks (number of occasions = 992). Multilevel analyses showed that workplace bullying is associated with emotional ex

Acute stress induces hyperacusis in women with high levels of emotional exhaustion.

BACKGROUND: Hearing problems is one of the top ten public health disorders in the general population and there is a well-established relationship between stress and hearing problems. The aim of the present study was to explore if an acute stress will increase auditory sensitivity (hyperacusis) in individuals with high levels of emotional exhaustion (EE). METHODS: Hyperacusis was assessed using uncomfortable loudness levels (ULL) in 348 individuals (140 men; 208 women; age 23-71 years). Multivariate analyses (ordered logistic regression), were used to calculate odds ratios, including interacti

Verbal abuse from outsiders versus insiders: comparing frequency, impact on emotional exhaustion, and the role of emotional labor.

Research on aggression from organizational outsiders (customers, clients or patients) has ignored insider-instigated aggression, and has been limited to employees in emotional labor jobs (e.g., social work and customer services). The authors argue that customer-employee interactions have distinct characteristics from organizational insider interactions, and provide two studies to compare the frequency and strain of verbal abuse from customers, supervisors and coworkers. Furthermore, they assess whether customer verbal abuse is only a critical issue for employees in jobs requiring emotional lab

The Complex Interplay Between Emotion Regulation and Work Rumination on Exhaustion.

This study examined the interplay between emotion regulation strategies (reappraisal and suppression) and work-related rumination (affective work rumination and detachment from work) on exhaustion. In all, 1985 participants from three human service occupations (psychologists, teachers, and ministers) completed the web-based survey. The results showed that reappraisal and detachment from work had a negative relation to exhaustion, whereas the relation between suppression and affective work rumination to exhaustion were positively directed. Moreover, results of mediation analyses showed that the

Passion for work and emotional exhaustion: the mediating role of rumination and recovery.

The purpose of the present research is to present a model pertaining to the mediating roles of rumination and recovery experiences in the relationship between a harmonious and an obsessive passion (Vallerand et al., 2003) for work and workers' emotional exhaustion. Two populations were measured in the present research: namely elite coaches and nurses. Study 1's model posits that obsessive passion positively predicts rumination about one's work when being physically away from work, while harmonious passion negatively predicts ruminative thoughts. In turn, rumination is expected to positively co

Workplace Cyberbullying and Interpersonal Deviance: Understanding the Mediating Effect of Silence and Emotional Exhaustion.

Workplace cyberbullying (WCB) is a new form of hostility in organizations in which information technology is used as a means to bully employees. The objective of this study is to determine the association between WCB and the interpersonal deviance (ID) of victims through parallel mediation through the ineffectual silence of employees and emotional exhaustion (EE). Conservation of resource (COR) theory and affective events theory were used as the study's guiding framework, and data were drawn from 351 white-collar employees who were employed in a variety of industries-such as banking, telecommu

Emotional exhaustion and poor psychological well-being among osteopathic medical school matriculants and graduates.

PURPOSE: Burnout is prevalent among medical students and is linked to depression, impaired academic performance, and medical errors. Although osteopathic medical students comprise 25% of U.S. medical students and often serve in high-need settings, their burnout and psychological well-being have been less frequently studied. The present study seeks to describe the prevalence of emotional exhaustion and psychological symptoms at matriculation and graduation in U.S. osteopathic medical students, and to examine differences across gender and race/ethnicity. Relationship between depression, anxiety and emotional exhaustion among infectious disease nurses: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Even after the COVID-19 outbreak, mental health challenges are both serious and widespread among medical staff in infectious disease departments, with nurses being particularly affected. There has been limited research on the relationships between common conditions such as depression, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. Network analysis (NA) is a novel method for quantifying the relationships between mental variables using mathematical approaches. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety and emotional exhaustion symptoms through NA among
