Assessing empirical research in bioethics.

Empirical research can aid ethical reflection in bioethics by identifying issues, by seeing how they are currently resolved, and by assessing the consequences of these current resolutions. This potential can be misused when the ethical issues in question are fundamentally non-consequentialist or when they are consequentialist but the empirical research fails to address the important consequences. An example of the former problem is some recent studies about bad consequences resulting from commercialized living kidney donor programs. These consequences could be avoided, but the crucial non-cons

Young people and gambling: an empirical research.

Gambling appears today as a heterogeneous, multidimensional phenomenon (Caretti et al., 2010; Whelan et al., 2007) that involves also young people. In our country, there is a progressive increase in pathological gambling in the youth population and in the disadvantaged social strata also supported by strong media pressure to spread the use of gambling, thus fuelling the mentality of relying on fate rather than the skills or commitment to succeed in life. The purpose of this research is to investigate the knowledge, perceptions and behaviours associated with gambling in a sample of 523 Italian

Environmental immobility: A systematic review of empirical research.

Environmental migration research has traditionally focused on mobility outcomes in the face of environmental change. However, the 'trapped populations' concept introduced in the influential Foresight Report (2011) drew attention to immobility outcomes owing to people's inability or unwillingness to migrate away from environmentally high-risk settings. To assess the evolution of the empirical research landscape of environmental immobility, this paper systematically reviews 55 studies in terms of their thematic focus areas, theoretical and methodological concerns, geographical distribution, the

Hysterical personality: an appraisal in light of empirical research.

An overview of the term hysterical personality is presented and existing measures of this construct are described. Statistical studies of hysterical personality are then reviewed, emphasizing the extent to which they support theory, clinical observation, description, and prediction. Evidence is still needed to bolster claims of empirical validity and it remains an open question whether hysterical personality should be viewed as a legitimate concept in its own right or as a form of extraversion. Empirical data are also needed on etiological determinants, psychological correlates, and response t

Parameters for safer gambling behavior: examining the empirical research.

There have been claims that new gambling technology is hazardous to player health, and that technological interventions can alleviate gambling-related harm. In this paper, we systematically review the empirical research about the nexus between gambling and technology to evaluate the veracity of these claims. We use a public health perspective (i.e., the Epidemiologic Triangle) to organize and present study results (i.e., agent, host, and environment). This review intends to offer insight about emerging technology and identify areas that indicate a need for additional research. Forty-seven stud

Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence: A Literature Review of Empirical Research.

Technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV) refers to a range of behaviors where digital technologies are used to facilitate both virtual and face-to-face sexually based harms. Such behaviors include online sexual harassment, gender- and sexuality-based harassment, cyberstalking, image-based sexual exploitation, and the use of a carriage service to coerce a victim into an unwanted sexual act. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on these different dimensions, drawing on existing empirical studies. While there is a growing body of research into technology-facilitated harms perp

Sexual problems in gay men: an overview of empirical research.

This article summarizes the findings and theoretical perspectives of 19 empirical studies of sexual problems in gay men. In order to understand these problems better, various differences between male homosexual and heterosexual functioning are discussed first. The studies included differ widely in terms of the issues explored, the populations studied, and the way data have been collected. In a few studies, researchers generally have looked at the prevalence and experience of sexual problems. In other studies, researchers have focused on the etiology and treatment of specific problems, such as

Self-citation in nursing research: Patterns, outliers, and empirical thresholds.

BACKGROUND: Self-citation plays a dual role in scientific communication: it may reflect legitimate scholarly continuity, but excessive self-referencing can distort citation-based metrics used in research evaluation. As citation indicators increasingly influence faculty promotion, institutional benchmarking, and the global visibility of nursing schools, understanding typical self-citation patterns within nursing has become important. PURPOSE: To examine the distribution of self-citation among highly cited nursing researchers and to establish empirical thresholds for identifying unusually high

[From research to practice: skin care--merely empiric?].

A modern skin care concept involving physiological lipids should be matched to the state of the skin, the season of the year and the presence of dermatoses. Also desirable would be substances that regulate the moisture status and barrier function of the stratum corneum, e.g. glycerin, in relevant concentrations. Of central importance in diseases associated with destruction of the uppermost layer of the skin, for example, neurodermatitis, is regular skin care with moisturizing products and a lipid composition that is as physiological as possible. In addition, the water and lipoid content of the

Gambling Disorder and comorbid PTSD: A systematic review of empirical research.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling Disorder (GD) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are frequently comorbid and often associated with a more severe clinical profile compared to those with either diagnosis alone. Despite recent growing interest in this comorbidity, there has been little effort to synthesize this domain of research and define areas of need for future research. DESIGN: The present work details a systematic review of empirical studies examining the relationship between PTSD and GD-related factors. This review encompassed 74 studies each examining the overlap between GD and the f

Trust in risk management: a model-based review of empirical research.

This review of studies of trust in risk management was designed, in part, to examine the relations between the reviewed research and the consensus model of trust that has recently emerged in other fields of study. The review begins by briefly elaborating the consensus views on the dimensionality and function of trust. It then describes the various models of trust that have been developed in the field of risk management, comparing them with the consensus approach. The findings of previous reviews are outlined, followed by a delineation of the open questions addressed by the present review, the

Translational or translationable? A call for ethno-immersion in (empirical) bioethics research.

The shift towards "empirical bioethics" was largely triggered by a recognition that stakeholders' views and experiences are vital in ethical analysis where one hopes to produce practicable recommendations. Such perspectives can provide a rich resource in bioethics scholarship, perhaps challenging the researcher's perspective. However, overreliance on a picture painted by a group of research participants-or on pre-existing literature in that field-can lead to a biased view of a given context, as the subjectivity of data generated in these ways cannot (and should not wholly) be escaped. In respo

[Idiopathic abdominal pain in children: results, deficits and perspectives of empirical research].

Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is one of the most common pain syndromes in childhood, with prevalence rates ranging from 10 to 20% in all school-age children. In nearly 50% the complaints persist over many years of their life-span to adolescence or adulthood. Although the empirical findings have increased in the last decade, our knowledge about the etiology, pathogenesis, and pathophysiology is still very limited. Current approaches suggest that we understand recurrent pain syndromes as a complex and multidimensional disturbance (biopsychosocial paradigm). In this respect there is strong evide

Emerging Gambling Problems and Suggested Interventions: A Systematic Review of Empirical Research.

The goal of the present systematic review is to identify emerging gambling problems and the harm minimization strategies proposed to address them. Our interdisciplinary research team conducted this systematic literature review in 5 nations between which there is significant gambling research exchange. A keyword search of the Scopus and Web of Science databases followed by filtering using inclusion criteria identified 1292 empirical gambling studies from peer-reviewed journals. The data obtained from the articles were analyzed using the content analysis technique. We then used a unique approach

Physician gender and patient-centered communication: a critical review of empirical research.

Physician gender has stimulated a good deal of interest as a possible source of variation in the interpersonal aspects of medical practice, with speculation that female physicians are more patient-centered in their communication with patients. Our objective is to synthesize the results of two meta-analytic reviews the effects of physician gender on communication in medical visits within a communication framework that reflects patient-centeredness and the functions of the medical visit. We performed online database searches of English-language abstracts for the years 1967 to 2001 (MEDLINE, AIDS

Empirically supported psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder: Current state of the research.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder requires psychiatric medications, but even guideline-concordant treatment fails to bring many patients to remission or keep them euthymic. To address this gap, researchers have developed adjunctive psychotherapies. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the evidence for the efficacy of manualized psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder. METHODS: We conducted a search of the literature to examine recent (2007-present), randomized controlled studies of the following psychotherapy interventions for bipolar disorder: psychoeducation (PE), cognitive

Empirical recommendations for improving the stability of the dot-probe task in clinical research.

The dot-probe task has been widely used in research to produce an index of biased attention based on reaction times (RTs). Despite its popularity, very few published studies have examined psychometric properties of the task, including test-retest reliability, and no previous study has examined reliability in clinically anxious samples or systematically explored the effects of task design and analysis decisions on reliability. In the current analysis, we used dot-probe data from 3 studies in which attention bias toward threat-related faces was assessed at multiple (≥5) time-points. Two of the s
